Scottish Greens football fantasy

192

I see the Scottish Greens have decided it is a poor decision to allow fans to congregate in pubs to watch football.  Their proposal is to allow Saturday’s fixture from Celtic Park to be free to air on TV, despite, you know, all the contracts and stuff.

There is not a shred of self-awareness with the crowd.  The Greens hold the balance of power in the Scottish Parliament, the SNP depend on them to pass legislation, in return for which they get nominal nods to their pet projects.

The Greens have no levers of control over TV contracts, but they exercise unique influence over the Scottish Government, whose policy it has been for months for football fans to congregate at indoor pubs instead of socially distanced and policed at open-air stadiums.

This reminds me of Life of Brian, the People’s Front were full of plans that would achieve nothing and refused to take the clear path before then.  Until Brian turned up, of course.  They have become a meme.

Play him with the Griff. They are terrified of him.

Stick Tam Rogic in as a maurauding No. 10. They are terrified of him.

  2. I buy my season ticket as do my 2 sons. I also subscribe to sky sports. I dont think its fair that others would be watching free when I shell our my cash.

Pubs in Central belt are closed.

Meanwhile no fans are allowed in to games.

    What a mess.

Up here we see the Glasgow Derby as the biggest game which is true within Scotland. But if Sky were to accede to turn it into a free-view game (even if the government paid them compensation which would be a very controversial use of public funds), they would be under even greater pressure to do similar with ManU/Liverpool etc.

Audience for MU/Liverpool can peak at 3.3m viewers whilst the highest ever peak for Celtic/Rangers is 1.4m so there would be a doubly strong case to turn that game to free-view and that would destroy the Sky model especially as the pandemic shows no signs of reducing.

    Not going to happen.

  4. Paul is as entitled to his political opinions as anyone else and much more entitled than anyone else to espouse them here. Even is disagreement his opinions are always worth listening to.

What I don’t understand is the wilful blindness on some of this.

A refusal to engage with the economic argument for pubs reopening while criticising the Greens for ignoring “the contracts and stuff” is bizarre. There are thousands of jobs on the line in hospitality, many more thousands dependent on those wages. To ignore that and complain it’s not fair we don’t get to see the football live seems like the actions of a petulant 2 year old.

  5. QUICKDRAW,

I think there are a couple of posters who simply take every opportunity to attack Paul67. It has been like that for a few years now. It says a lot that he seldom, if ever, reacts.

  6. Lenny would need to re-jig the team radically to include Rogic in the starting 11.Especially,an unfit Rogic.I would think Lenny has a problem only with,Laxsalt,or Taylor ,Turnbull,or Ntcham, and any 2 from 4 upfront.Ntcham usually plays well against them,so maybe take that one out.

  7. Had it not been for COVID, Saturdays game would have been watched live by (a) 58,000 Celtic season ticket holders, (b) 800 Zombies paying £50 a head, and (c) anyone with access to Sky TV.

For Saturdays game this can be watched live by (a) 58,000 Celtic season ticket holders via their Pass to Paradise, (b) anyone with access to Sky TV. So, in theory, the only ones losing out are (a) the 800 Zombies and (b) anyone who’s only access to Sky was via a pub.

The difficulties in seeing Saturdays game live is causing much more stress to the Blue Meanies than to most Celtic fans.

  8. more plutocracy would you not think

I also have a terrible suspicion that Sky’s ultimate strategy for Scottish football is to allow it to wither on the vine. They buy up the rights because they’re cheap, and then decline to show games they’ve got the rights for (eg. St Mirren v Celtic). Through suppressing the product they maintain the low value and hence ensure they can continue to pick it up for peanuts, while it never threatens to challenge their flagship product, the EPL.

It reminds me of that old rumour of Osram or Philips buying up the patent for the everlasting lightbulb back in sixties, and locking it away for decades.

    Very good points.

Although (admittedly in my twilight zone) Celtic would also be losing out to the tune of up to £400,000 ticket revenue.

Yes – you read that right.

If those 800 “Zombies” wanted to see their team at Celtic Park ….. I’d charge them £500 EACH for the privilege – UP FRONT – DIRECTLY TO US.

Obviously I’d sweeten the deal by guaranteeing they’d get more for their money than the equivalent investment in Club1690 (or whatever it’s called).

  13. For what it’s worth the First Minister has spoken on the subject…

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has called on Sky Sports to show Saturday’s Celtic vs Rangers game for free to help stop the spread of coronavirus.

With the Premiership match behind closed doors, fans are desperate to watch their heroes in a game that could be critical in deciding the destination of the league title at the end of the season.

The SNP leader has warned fans on both sides of the Glasgow divide of the risks that travelling to a bar in England or another household to watch the game might entail, and instead encouraged supporters to watch the clash between Neil Lennon and Steven Gerrard’s sides at home.

And she believes removing the pay barrier for those who cannot afford a Sky package will remove the urge to have large gatherings or take other unnecessary risks.

In Thursday’s virtual coronavirus briefing, Sturgeon said: “I really do strongly agree with Joan McAlpine and would encourage Sky Sports this weekend to make the Rangers vs Celtic match free to view for supporters.

“As a small but important contribution that they could make to help keep people safe right now.

“Enabling people to watch the match in the comfort and safety of their own home and reduce the temptation people who don’t have access to pay-to-view services might have to go and watch the match somewhere else.

“So if anyone from Sky Sports is listening, I would encourage you to think about making the match free to view this weekend.”

  14. So guys who haven’t commented on here for years suddenly emerge to have a go at Paul 67.

I have a season ticket, and Sky Sports, not everyone can afford either or both, at this time I think Sky could get some needed good publicity, by showing the game to all IMO

  16. If we control the midfield are not out numbered and committed to the job we will win , all bets are off if we allow them to control the middle and play it up to Kent who is fast, i would go with 3 dogs of war centrally, if we have those within the squad , Mcgregor in the 10 role with Laxalt pushing onto the penalty taker and Frimpong likewise on the right side,2 upfront to hassle their centre halfs who will make errors are are lousy defending crosses, this game can give us a cushion providing we do not lose as we have a game in hand, a victory would be fantastic, DO NOT LOSE THE MIDFIELD and we will be fine.

  17. hi ghuys, noted a thread from last night about who had the hardest shot, someone mentioned neillyl mochan well all i remember of neilly was him running out with his green tracksuit on when ever any of the lions got injured, IMHO the hardest shots came from tommy gemmell and bobby murdoch,H.H.

That can’t be correct, can it? Surely season ticket holders have paid for the game?

  20. that Rod Stewart video had me filling up in awe, any of the CQNers on it ?

    its magic.

    So Celtic HO;D THE LINE

  21. The Pass To Paradise covers the very same games that a season ticket would have So Saturdays game will be available even though it is also on Sky.

Haven’t heard anything g about ou Europa League home games. I know BT are showing them but unsure whether Celtic are allowed to include them, even at a further nominal charge. Its likely itll be BT only I think.

  22. Could our First Minister not pick up the phone to Sky given the risk and fallout of folks mixing to watch match rather than “hope someone from Sky is listening “. Another example of disconnect between politics and our national game….

  23. As the working day draws to a close, I am left pondering, issues at work, blah blah blah but can only think yaaaas 1 more day of graft before a Hun Skelping .

  24. I’d go with Julien, Duffy, Ajer – Jeremy’s pace to get up and down and Taylor to play more defensively and not forage to their by line.

Midfield is an issue for me as it lacks energy and bite without Christie – Rogic is a game changer player, therefore I’d start with brown, mcgregor and Turnbull and bring tom on later.

up front its ajeti to hold up the ball and klimala to run at them

hope we have the legs – mcgregor and Duffy have played a lot of games in a short space of time – mcgregor looked like he lacked spark.

Without the fans we will need Duffy and Brown to get his time going – lets shut them up.

  25. 4 – 4 – 1 Saturday resulting in 3 – 5 – 2 when attacking.

Snuff out the midfield win ball at halfway line or just over and attack like feck…

There that is what wee Berty would say

    D :)

  26. watch Beaton at corner kicks – its something many of the refs in the league at very “clever” at. They know we are a threat at corner kicks. Players all over the world jostle for position, pushing and pulling each other. Beaton always blows for foul against the attacker, danger over.

Its very strange that rarely a penalty is given for this jostling – that means 99.9% of the time its the attacker doing the fouling when most of the time the defender is not looking at the ball.

    Rips my knitten

PS NO WAY Beaton would get this game if there were fans attending!

James, you are playing the ‘reasonableness’ card. That is both surprising and ironic. Surprising in that your blog thrives on hysteria – sometimes readable hysteria – nonetheless hysteria. 28. 🙋‍♂️ Hi Fellow Celtic Fans! 😊

I have to laugh at politicians and how they don’t often think things through. (Or have thought it through and know full well the consequences.) If The Celtic Vs Rangers match becomes free-to-view, (can’t see this happening myself), I wonder how many house parties will be arranged from folks saying “Hey guys, the match is on for free! Do you fancy coming over to my place to watch it?” Far from discouraging people to stay at home, I think MORE people are likely to come together if the match does become free. 😊

Of course, there may be other ‘sponsors’ who have an interest in increasing publicity and having more people engaging in Saturday’s match… e.g Sky themselves? Celtic, Rangers, SPFL/SFA? Supermarkets/Off-Licences? SMSM? 🤔 Who knows? 🤔

Anyway, I for one am looking forward to a commanding Celtic performance and a good result for us on Saturday! 😊

Take Care, Keep Safe and Hail Hail!
