Scouting, your network keeps you, Pep and Patrick

574

I remember one of the Q&A evenings in Blantyre when it was suggested from the floor that Celtic pay whatever money necessary to retain John Park as chief scout.  John out-performed his peers for several years, but, as you know, there are no gurus in football.  A fallow period followed the recruitment of Mikael Lustig in January 2012; many players arrived in the years since then but few were able to enhance the team (with the odd outstanding exception).

Football scouting at this level isn’t really about being able to spot a player, it is as much about contacts.  Your network keeps you.  With many of these guys, their networks diminish over time.  They fall out with each other regularly – trust is a precious commodity in football transfer negociations.  Your value as a scout to an agent is largely dependent on your club.  Since 2012 Celtic’s financial position relative to the English leagues has diminished.  We will spend less than they will on any given player, and we will buy fewer players.

Perhaps for these reasons Brendan Rodgers decided a change was needed and has now secured his former colleague at Chelsea, Lee Congerton.  Congerton has had recent spells at two highly dysfunctional clubs: Hamburg and Sunderland, but rejected a pretty spectacular offer to join Brendan’s revolution at Celtic.  We have recruited a known quantity who will fit with the manager’s plans as closely as Chris Davies does.  He will also bring a fresh batch of scouts and agents to the table.  I hear they are working on plans for the summer already.

Amid the gloating at the hubris of English football amid another humbling in Europe last night, my Dad made the point that unlike Arsenal, or Manchester United, Manchester City didn’t try to cheat us by scamming a penalty in our Champions League encounters. They played with a straight bat.

We have also established a beneficial relationship with them. A year with Jason Denayer, the purchase of Dedryck Boyata and 18 months with Patrick Roberts. So far.

Roberts’ situation at his parent club should be easier to fathom after City’s exit. 10 points adrift in the Premier League and the only team to be eliminated from the Champions League last 16 by a lesser- moneyed side, what chance Pep Guardiola decides what his team needs for next season is a player City shipped out to Celtic in January 2016?

It is not going to happen. Patrick is caught in an impossible situation in Manchester. The Manchester City football model harvests innumerable players, but precious few young English players will make it onto the roster in any decade. None will do so in a season when there is a perceived need for them to up their game.  Pep will spend big this summer, Roberts’ opportunity to breakthrough in Manchester next season have diminished.

My first reaction at full time last night? Our chances of getting to keep Patrick increased.  Which would be a very good thing, for both club and player.

Didn’t Tony Blair convert to Catholicism?

Maybe he felt the need to go to confession.

As i said…we could debate this all day.

It might not be the explicit letter of the law for obvious reasons, but it is certainly the spirit of the Act…i.e The Protestant and Hanoverian succession….which was the fundamental principle.

    Anyway:)

No….you are just trying to win an argument here.

Id put it more simply….What was the purpose of the act? Was it to secure the Protestant and Hanoverian succession or not?

  9. I don’t know much about politic’s and, from some of the other stuff that l have read on here that, for example, that the SNP don’t have any Catholic MP’s…….

Well I caught PMQ’s on ash-Wednesday and, there was this tall, bespectacled, bald SNP-MP, his name is Patrick who was standing asking Q’s and, there where two lady SNP-MP’s sitting down behind him, all three of these MP’s had ashes on they’re forehead’s ?

As l said l don’t know much about politics, but,…..would Scottish Independence not mean the end of the butchers apron?

    Oh, and,…

If, the huns get away with all they’re chicanery, will tens of thousands of, innocent, well meaning, faithful Celtic fans q-up to be pillaged again ?

Coz, you do know that they’ll do it again….don’t you ?

Indeed, it’s starting again….just look at Sunday ?

All it takes is a compliant vicTim……backed by financial mugs.

Time for some thinking outside the box, eh ?

    It’s all about – Jungle cuteness…..

Thoughts and Prayers for all Celts in need.

Got phone call from police this morning following my official complaint about the “hunskelper” banner at the scum hut on Sunday, was informed that after several similar complaints it was reported to the procurator fiscal who has decided that NO CRIMINAL ACT was committed! Disgraceful but not surprised!

Can we reach an agreement with Man City and the lhad himself that we can afford? Hope so.

As far as I know the office of Prime Minister was only a creation of the late eighteenth century, long after the Act of Settlement; so, I think that constitutionally there is no bar to a Catholic becoming PM. Why there hasn’t been one is another question altogether. It was often said that Shirley Williams should have been the 1st woman PM. She openly practised her Catholic faith; still does as far as I know.

HMRC need to prove that fraud was wittingly committed.

If they do, the logical conclusion is that Murray Mints and cohorts go to jail, assets like Ibrox will become vulnerable from law suits and 21 trophies are rescinded.

    Wont happen.

Charges will be mitigated and the bigot buck gravy train will continue. Betcha.

In my opinion assaults on the Irish or perceived Irish(Catholics) in Scotland is not racist but sectarian.

I wonder if I could ask a small favour ..

When your next online, could you possibly re-publish your

spread sheet with RFC annual losses, since SDM was in charge ..

Without wanting to put you to much work, but in view of the current

Supreme Court case, could you possibly Publish if you can,

a version that would show the annual losses, with either

a DOS / VSS or EBT marked against the relevant years concerned ..

I remember thinking when reading your spread sheet before,

that there was something very peculiar about some of the annual losses.

    Thanks in advance ..

ERNIE LYNCH, as you are aware much of the British Constitution is unwritten. Part of the powers and responsibility of the PM is to: formally advises the Sovereign on the appointment of Archbishops and Bishops of the Church of England,[21] but the PM’s discretion is limited by the existence of the Crown Nominations Commission.

So as there is no full written Constitutional remit for the PM but we can take it that part of the unwritten element will ensure that no Catholic is allowed to advise the Monarch on the appointment of Anglican Archbishops. Would you agree?
