Scouts will have seen different aspects in Malmo and Glasgow

446

Malmo quickly followed up their best result of the season against Salzburg with a 2-1 win over top of the table Gothenburg.  They remain four points off the pace but whatever form issues they have had in recent months appear to be resolved.

Champions League football was a harsh experience for Malmo last season.  They qualified after beating Salzburg 3-0 in the play-off round, coincidentally the same score they beat the same opponents by in the last round.  While Salzburg went on to top Celtic’s Europa League group, Malmo lost home and away to Juventus and Atletico Madrid, winning their only points in a home win over Olympiakos.

I’m sure Celtic will have scouted yesterday’s game in Malmo and will have learned more about the home team than Malmo learned about Celtic during yesterday’s stroll in the park at Firhill.  We will have seen them at their best, they will have seen us scarcely breaking sweat.

Ronny will have an idea of the extent of the challenge ahead.  Malmo might not be a match for Juventus or Atletico but they know how to play European football.  We will all have an important job to do at Celtic Park next week.

  1. Anyone expecting us to be “Gung-Ho”in the SPL is going to be disappointed. What you are seeing is how we will play in every game.RD has the players playing the way he thinks will take us more on an upward route.Possession, possession,is the name of the game.In the SPL it will sometimes lead to a barrowload of goals, sometimes not, with the 11 men behind the ball tactics, but it will be of enormous use in Europe. How many games have Celtic thrown away in Europe away from home, with our old style of play?.

Look at Barca.Every game they play is the same,be it Europe, league, cups, and whatever the opposition. They never change.People expecting RD to change to 4-4-2,in the SPL,then a totally different game for Europe, are dreaming.Me,I would take a 2-0 win every week, and so would the Barca fans.

  2. What is it with todays Society? You tell a lie & people are happy to listen to you. You tell the truth & your friends, foes & family look upon you as if you’re some sort if Demon.

I remember Hibs coming to Celtic Park, early 70’s and on a roll. Win,they go top.

We put three past them in the first twenty minutes, finished 5-0. That was the end of that!

  5. I don’t see anyone jumping all over Nicky Law’s recent comments since he seems to be in agreement with John Collins. He seems to think that Playing in the top flight of Scottish football would be so Pathetic that he recently made this comment “Another year in the lower tier of Scottish Football is a blessing in disguise”. Altho, i’m pretty sure his use of the word “Blessing” didn’t go down too well with the Hun Hoardes.

  6. Caught a few minutes of David Moyes being interviewed on the radio yesterday.

When asked about the difference between the Spanish press and the press here , he says , in Spain they ask questions about the tactics he has employed, substitutions , formations etc . To be honest I wasn’t sure what he said about our press but it wasn’t complimentary

  7. Looking forward to the Malmo games. Partly in expectation but also with some nerves as well.

They are obviously a decent side and we have to give them every respect.

I still think we should look at a ScandaScot league which would be the top league of five participating leagues with three clubs from each league playing each other twice. The bottom team from each participating league would be automatically relegated and the top team from each participating league below being promoted.

The winner of the ScandaScot League would represent Northen Europe in the Champions League ( or maybe top two) and the next three in the Europ League.

This league would have an viewing public of 30 million and maybe attractive to TV.

This league could comprise Scotland(Depending on how the leagues finish this year) – Celtic, Aberdeen, Hearts – Sweden – Gothenburg, Malmo, AIK Stockholm Denmark – Copenhagen, Brondby, Aalborg , Norway – Rosenborg, Molde, Valerenga, Finland, HJK Haka, HIFK Helsinki, FC Lahti

That wouldn’t be such a bad league. Would it?

I know there would be lots of flaws to iron out but better than same old same old.

  10. Just been catching up on Twitter and read Ronny’s comments on @celticfc. Some great comments about the media being a ‘circus’ but he knows how it works in his defence of John Collins’ interview.

    Well done Ronny.

  11. First time I’ve ever agreed with Nicky Law.

I thought his wee new team getting gubbed in the play offs was a good thing too.

  12. 67 European Cup Winners on

Early indications on Chris Sutton as a commentator –

I understand exactly what he says and what he means – it makes sense to me, he even gets it right when complimenting the opposition (yesterday against Thistle one of their players got booked) Sutton suggested a bit harsh I agreed Sutton was negative on RD in the early days – he was right, but he like me changed his view when RD eventually did get it right Sutton suggested that Inter Milan got out of jail in the San Siro – he was right Chris Sutton commentates on Celtic games with a Celtic mind – Quarabac “What do Celtic need to do to win a free kick”

But the point is Walker Burley Nicholas McLeod et all – never told it as it was because they were scared of losing favour with their paymaster – Chris Sutton (like he was as a player) speaks as he sees with no fear

  13. Celtic dropped 10 points early last season after playing in European games.

It wasn’t until later in the year before this stopped.

Yesterday was never going to be sexy fitty after last Wednesdays jaunt.

Let’s face it, we are spoilt for choice

  17. Arrived at the ticket office today at half 3.The queue was down the slope and on to the pavement.

    Queue moved very quickly.

Left ticket office at quarter to 4 with 2 season tickets updated and 2 additional tickets in hand.

    Happy Chappy.

  18. i have a bundle of Views from early 90 s.. i will look them out if anyone wants them.. read about cumbernauld and then be thankful of what we have…also realise we were being cheated all that time

  19. Dannymac,

How did you manage to get the 2 extra ticket? I had my mate and I’s 2 season tickets updated on Friday afternoon but when I tried to get another 2, I was told that I would have to wait until 12 midday on Wednesday. This was all on the phone, right enough.

This comment from JC is just the latest media-contrived anti-Celtic controversy ….. they will always find something to ‘stir the pot’ with….well, they’ve got a lot of hurtin’ still to experience….and I just can’t get enough….

    Right idea, wrong size.

To give a cross border league the same market gravity as the “big 5” we need in excess of £1.5 Trillion in combined GDP, equating to a total population in excess of 50 million.

Scotland, with Sweden, Norway, Denmark, plus Holland and Belgium gets you that critical mass. At that scale, it’s bigger than all but Germany. It becomes a market that the broadcasters cannot ignore and side line.

Problem is you’re then juggling the self interests of 6 FAs. The Blazer is the biggest obstacle to progress.

    ‘Twas ever thus.
