Script is written for momentous semifinal

152

The script for tomorrow’s League Cup semifinal could hardly be better for broadcaster and sponsor, Premier Sports.  Celtic and Aberdeen are locked at the top of the table, having only dropped points to each other and opened up a healthy gap on the receding pack.

Aberdeen’s early season promise faced big tests over the last two weeks: Celtic, at Celtic Park, where they earned an enormously credible draw; then Newco, whom they beat at home to revive something akin to the Spirit of Gothenburg 83.

Football, however, doesn’t allow for rest.  They face Celtic tomorrow knowing that at least some of us expect the façade to crumble when the seal is broken on their unbeaten run.

As we mentioned earlier in the week and Philippe Clement offered as an excuse on Wednesday night, Aberdeen did not play two in four days between July and the week just finished.  Tomorrow, they are forced into action three days after that win over Newco.  This stuff matters.

On Wednesday, Brendan Rodger was able to rest half his team, while giving game time to those most in need of it.  We are very used to playing every three or four days and will hit the Hampden surface in peak condition.  Aberdeen will struggle to cope, especially when the legs fatigue late in the game.

Still, we face a club and a city enjoying a rare moment of prosperous unity.  Jimmy Thelin will squeeze every ounce out of his side tomorrow.  He knows, this trophy is his best chance of success at Aberdeen.  Injuries and suspensions will eventually sap their momentum, while Celtic will likely not have so many European ties during the Scottish Cup run.

This is Aberdeen’s biggest game of the season.  To them, it will feel like their biggest game in many years, even more than recent cup finals.  Celtic will need to be at their best.

    —–

    Is this true?

If so, 0.58 goal involvements per game.

    Very impressive.

    Recruitment “debate”.

    Is it required?

Brendan has more control than before.

Time will tell if that is a good thing or not.

One positive is the manager looks like much happier.

(If you are ambitious and believe in your expertise, more control at work usually does make you more content)

Agree with earlier comment that it is too soon to tell.

    Right now though?

IMHO, everyone we signed this summer (perhaps with the exception ofthe young keeper) looks like they could go into the first team with little or no performance deterioration in the group.

Also – I don’t know the wages in and out – but from fees and numbers of bodies involved – we must have come close to a cost neutral window.

Only slight concern for me? I wish Adam was a bit fitter/sharper.

  3. BACK TO BASICS – GLASS HALF FULL @ 10:06 PM,

Yes, absolutely and remember when he first came here had a health issue which meant that he was below par and lost a significant amount of weight.

So, although I haven’t checked his more recent contributions should be even better.

    This season…

    Played 11 Goals 4 Assists 5

    Last season…

    Played 32 Goals 7 Assists 9

A real gem of a player.

    Hail Hail

  4. Interesting to see that of the 18 teams playing in the CL on Tuesday 6 managed to play their weekend domestic matches tonight. Giving them 20 hours or so extra to recover.

Maybe one day we / Scotland will take heed.

  5. If Brendan is fully in charge of all football issues does that then mean that if the Dons win the league then BR is totally to blame and would become sacking material to lose the league to a club with a toenail of BR resources?

“Again, you are making things up, while I present fact after fact, quote after quote, words straight from the horses mouth.”

You keep using quotes as proof of facts. That they were said cant be argued, beyond that I’m not sure what they prove when it comes to what we were talking about – Nicolas Kuhn.

Straight from the horses mouth (you) at the time was that Kuhn was no better than a squad player from Rapid.

Straight from the horses mouth (you) was that Idah was a player who Brendan was responsible for signing – his CV had come across Brendans desk, he was a player Brendan knew about

And straight from the horses mouth (you) was that Kuhn was a signing that the recruitment team was responsible for. The recruitment team that Mark Lawwell headed up at the time. A disaster he paid for with his job shortly after (from the horses mouth of course)

Straight from the horses mouth (you) was that the January window (Kuhn and Idah) was a disaster.

We seem to be revising it now Kuhn is seen as being a success. I’m afraid you cant have it both ways, just like you cant escape the pressure that you’ve put on Brendan, the player and yourself by suggesting Idah was “his signing.”

Seriously, stick by what you say and front up.

Well, obviously the “quality”, that the team wanted wasn’t able to be recruited this transfer window, so for me “working down the list”, wasn’t a viable option.

We brought in a first team winger and a back up striker with pace and physicality that we badly need, without the loan to buy option it suggests unless the young man rips up the trees in the league head to head, he goes back to Norwich and we go again in the summer.

Only twenty eight in the first team squad now and out of our fourteen playersout on loan, eight of them are development players.

So good bit of housekeeping and let’s hope we really do start the planning the summer recruitment, we still need that quality for Europe.

    Hail Hail

    Good morning all from Govanhill.

Play up you fine Celtic men and make our Saturday jolly

  10. A few suggesting prioritising Tuesday vs today’s game earlier.

Personally I think that would be wrong. We have more than a punchers chance today. Much more than that if we focus on today and play to our strengths. That for me is wheee our energy should be. The chance to take a lead in the overall trophies won table from the greatest team of all time at Hampden pre Xmas has an appeal also.

Leipzig are top of bundesliga right now. We lost 7-1 to a mid table team there who then lost to a lower league team in their cup. Tuesday will see us with a punchers chance and maybe a wee bit more. We can deal with that in a better frame of mind if we win today. Focus should be 100% on this game. Just my opinion and I respect others see it different.

Some folk are not worth the bother.

Like a tabloid journalist the mantra is :

Brendan signing good. Old regime bad. Rewrite history to suit.

BR has done some good things. Previous regime also did good things. BR not fancying some of previous regime may be based on ability or maybe his desire for control. Many clubs still have the manager with a broad span of control. Meant modern ones seek not to allow this. Long term we will see if this way works or ends in tears. For now we should just enjoy the great success the club has earned. And hopefully achieve where we could be if we max our potential in Europe.

  12. Anyone thinking Brendan is looking ahead to Tuesday, and might pick a team today with one eye on that game, has their head up their Ass.How many times must we listen to this drivel?.

Great day of sport coming up.

It kicks off with England v The All Blacks at 3.10pm before the main event at 5.30pm when the famous Glasgow Celtic take on Aberdeen. Hopefully I’ll be in a great mood when I watch a replay of Scotland v Fiji tonight.

Amongst all the hyperbole surrounding Aberdeen’s 2-2 victory at Celtic Park, I’ve not heard a mention that we were missing CCV and Greg Taylor that day.

    I think that’s a major oversight.

If we play to form today and take our chances, the Dons could suffer.

    Cheerio for now.

    ——————-

No score predicts from me but yes if we play as we can we WILL win – return to normality with Calmac & CCV back.,Kuhn, Kyogo & Maeda to start up front. Kasper in goal and AJ at right back. Taylor, or Valle? Scales, or, Trusty? Any two from Bernardo, Engels, Hatate – Forrest, Palma, Yang, Idah also available..

We have a completely fit squad – when was the last time that was the case? HH

  21. Interesting to see if we have learned from the league encounter and disrupt the sheep.

Top of my list is to counter the two handed shoved in the back from the defenders , particularly Devlin at right back. Option to throw yourself to the ground ( ref probably ignores) or take the ball into feet and force a few fouls thereafter come short and spin behind.

The blonde 6 who plays in front of the centre halves was afforded too much on the ball , so priority to make his life a misery , for me Reo needs to force the issue with him.

Other than that , play our own game , they looked suspect down the right , and we’ll run out comfortable winners 3-0.

Team along the usual lines ….

    HH

  22. Another Hampden double for kyogo, hopefully. I think we might start with Valle, but unsure who he’ll pick between Trusty and Scales. The latter has had an excellent season, though I thought Trusty (who’s quicker) looked very good with CCV.

  23. Bada Bing – the army of volunteers showing up was a beautiful sight to see though has caused plenty of prblems too as there was no oraganisation of them and they were getting in the way of the emergency services.

There will be plenty of debate regarding the mismanagement of the response to this disaster in the coming weeks and months. The local Valencian government is not covering itself in glory. They could have requested the disaster be treated as a national level crisis but this means central govt takes over – instead they kept control which meant outside assistance was limited. Police, national guard and army have all been complaining that they are ready to go in and help but being held back by bureaucracy. Slowly it is changing and the army are now going in in big numbers (10,000 or so). But that should have happened on Wednesday.

    It is heartbreaking.
