Season for points to be dropped in unlikely places

751

Yesterday’s result at Ibrox gave some welcome encouragement but it would be wrong to read too much into it.  Rangers still have the kind of lead that would have Celtic thoroughly confident of a league win and, lest we forget, St Johnstone collected all three points from Celtic Park already this season.

The win at Inverness was much more important.  The Highlanders are bottom of the league but that is a false position.  Two points separate Hibs, Dunfermline, Aberdeen and Inverness, while Kilmarnock, who shipped six goals to Inverness at home two weeks ago, are only a further two points away.  Even with 10 men Inverness remained well organised yesterday, don’t be surprised if they move ahead of the four teams above them in the weeks to come.

The league is remarkably tight from fourth place St Johnstone to bottom Inverness, where fewer points separate the teams than split Celtic and Rangers. Don’t, therefore, be surprised if points are dropped in the most unlikely places.

Celtic fans can fly the Saltire if they wish to. I’m proud to. Flying a Saltire does no mean you are pro SFA etc or any of that garbage.

There is more to Scotland than just Football & Politics.

There’s still no need to sing rebel songs to celebrate our Irish heritage.

If it’s about, “Recognising the emancipation of the Irish people from nearly a millenium of tyranny…” then actually, the English state was never in control of more than a fraction of the country (The Pale) until the beginning of the 17th Century. Your sums are about 700 years out.

And if that’s really the case, why aren’t we singing songs about Daniel O’Connell (The Liberator) or Charles Stewart Parnell (The Uncrowned King of Ireland), who both did at least as much to emancipate the Irish people from tyranny as the IRA? Why aren’t we singing songs about Arthur Griffith? Douglas Hyde? WB Yeats?

I also wonder why Republic of Ireland fans, who support the Republic of Ireland rather than Celtic, don’t feel the need to celebrate the emancipation of the Irish people from about 300 years of tyranny at their games?

Maybe it’s because Celtic fans are uniquely stupid and ignorant?

Why can’t we all be just like you? (That’s what you really think, isn’t it? Go on, admit it.)

The fact that so few chose to do so is significant though, don’t you think?

“Yes mate, the only question was to ask if you thought (or think) or come close to thinking Lennon needed to be replaced.”

No. I haven’t at any point wanted him replaced.

I didn’t want Lenny to get the job initially because I don’t think it should be a position for a first-time manager, but once the decision was made I accepted what comes with that and have tried to be realistic about where we stand as a team.

Lenny is a manager still learning the ropes and as such he will make mistakes – that simply goes with the territory. Last season he achieved more than I expected, as I felt it would take him a year to bed in. I have been encouraged with his efforts so far, and while this season has been patchy it is easy to forget he has been without key personnel like Izaguirre and Commons, and has not had a settled defence available either through injuries or suspensions, while other players have simply lost form.

But we are just over a quarter of the way through the season, and our title rivals have a first-time manager who so far has enjoyed a sterling start in the league, but will certainly make his own mistakes as the season advances. When the pressure builds during the run-in I think Lenny’s experience from last season will weigh heavily in our favour.

It’s not helpful to anyone, because it’s not a clear cut distinction, unless you define the terms very clearly.

Sorry, but that’s just a cop-out. I suspect it is unhelpful to your argument, because it muddies the waters and enables you to claim Brother Walfrid was a Republican.

Brother Walfrid and the other founding fathers of our club were motivated more by Catholicism than Irish nationalism, far less Republicanism. They chose the name, “Celtic,” to build bridges with the native Scots, and doing anything which leads to unnecessary division with our neighbours (and singing rebel songs certainly is unecessary and creates division) would go against everything Brother Walfrid stood for.

Republicanism has, and had, nothing to do with the formation of Celtic Football Club. Faith Of Our Fathers has more claim to be intrinsic to Celtic’s identity than Boys of the Old Brigade.

“he (NL) made a comment about watching a big game during the mon years on CelticTV (before it closed down) and couldnt believe the difference in quality. He then said it was only then he realised just how far a gap there was in quality between then and at that point.”

I would be careful to draw a distinction on what Neil was referring to as the “quality” on display that he noted. I believe he was referring to the quality of player that we could buy then (Lennon, Hartson, Sutton) and the 3 great players MON inherited from previous managerial spends (Larsson, Petrov & Moravcik) rather than the quality of play, which may be implied in your post.

We all know the reasons why we cannot operate as we did in that brief period of time. When the likes of Jordan Henderson and Connor Wickham cost £18m and £8m respectively, the chance of picking up a 3rd choice striker from a top EPL team or a starting midfielder from a mid-table EPL team for £6m are long gone.

We have to shop in different markets. Lenny has done well to identify the likes of Izzy, Wanyama and Kayal and has two great Bosmans in Ledley and Matthews but shopping in that market does increase the risk that, along the way, you will sign some players who are not up to the standard too (Cha??, Daryl Murphy, Bangura??)

Won’t do Gordon; this will get your ESPN invites stopped but I know you’ll always get a great reception at CP. You’ve earned that right.

I condemn them for not paying their taxes. As far as equipment for the forces is concerned, I really don’t think the amounts they with-held would have made much difference to the defence budget. I do take great delight in taunting the Orcs I know about it, right enough.

Don’t rely on me mate ..check out any of the official fotos of the stadium during the game, there were plenty of saltires.

What have I said to indicate I would have anything agianst the tricolour? (I assume you refer to the Republic of Ireland version:O)

I mind you spat the dummy oot and changed yer name in past in support of our “Scottishness” or in protest against our Irishness. I have since looked for aw the saltires en sevilla and could only find a haundfae – no that I have a problem with the saltire, my national flag – just with accuracy and those who have a problem with Celtic’s Irishness. Why are you no “tricolours en sevilla” if you are so interested in the majority.
