Season saved by midfield energy

138

The last points Celtic dropped in the season was the 2-0 defeat on 22 March at Tannadice, when the starting line- up included Kelechi Iheanacho and Reo Hatate.  Despite being pivotal in the recovery from being two goals down at Ibrox a few weeks earlier, Reo never started another match and played only 51 minutes football across the remainder of the season.  Kelechi played in every subsequent game – scoring goals to give Celtic the lead in six of them, but that outing against Dundee United was his last start.

The next two outings (Dundee and St Mirren) saw Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in instead of Reo, with Tomas Cvancara replacing Kelechi.  The St Mirren game saw a substitute appearance from Arne Engels after a long-term injury.  Arne started every game from that moment, in a midfield with alongside Callum McGregor and Benjamin Nygren.

The mobility in the middle of the park from these three was what was missing in earlier weeks.  They each do the hard yards, chase back to ensure breakaways are suffocated before they become dangerous, and make darting runs forward to open up space.

I know that you know this, but making it clear, so that our expectations of the matter are reasonable:

No Manager has full control of the football dept.

First, there is a overall spend that is set by UEFA.

Second: Within that, there is a budget set by the Board.

Third: There could be a ceiling for individual Transfer Fees that would require Board approval if they were to breached (even if the overall budget was not breached).

There would be limits for salary and Transfer fees to be paid for players of a certain age and injury history.

All of the above and many other bumps on the road can prevent a manager from doing what seems sensible and seemingly with budget.

And those of us looking from the outside will not be particularly understanding.

    Cheers,

  2. There was a story years ago that tbh I can’t find anywhere now, but apparently, Chris Sutton used to go into the Celtic dressing room and say in his Boycie voice….” Good morning Eyal…has your army killed any children yet today”?

Good luck Welshy….nice move by the club letting him leave on a free.

    He’ll probably go to Toulouse.

That MN is overpaid for the job he has done is not a case that would get support.

His skill set does not align with the requirements of being the kind of CEO Celtic need.

Any idea of what a CEO with relevant skills would cost or where to look for comparison.

On how much do Directors get paid in dividends based on below par performance how much would Directors with relevant skills expect to be paid?

Could relevant remuneration be a reason that there has been no new CEO appointed yet?

Celtic pay around £1.5 million pounds for both a CEO who is well qualified as a lawyer and has specialised in sporting legal contracts, and a CFO who qualified as a chartered accountant from Deloitte, both these important depts, Legals and financials are outwith the football dept, I know of no football manager who wants to control the football dept, also taking control of the legals and financials, hope that clears up control of the football operation

TBB – enjoyed your posts today across two threads about Martin being used to deliver stability over the next 12 months.

    ____

Ultimately, the task set to all managers is to win football games. Cumulatively, if the number of points gained exceeds those achieved by competitors, the successful manager guides his team to title and cup wins.

Martin O’Neill has done all that with Celtic. He did it initially a generation ago and he did it twice this season in the most trying and demanding of circumstances. More than anyone else, Martin won that title. In fact, is highly unlikely that anyone other than him could have hunted down our competitors so successfully. And that’s despite his age.

I can’t think of any other candidate with better equipped for the post of Celtic manager.

It must tough for you to have supported a team which has won 20 leagues out of the past 25 whilst remaining financially solvent this past 1/4 of a century. A club which has not had to sell out to PE and one which no VC has had a sniff at.

20 leagues is 37% of what we have ever one. Achieved in 18% of the time we have played. Feels good to me.

“Oh what will Peter decide for us?….”

“Oh what will Michael ever say to us?…..”

The top and bottom of it is:

In 2004 one year before MON-1 walked, he went out of his way as an executive employee, to warn Timdom that in terms of European aspirations go, you’ll need to get used to recruiting from the pathetic Tory pissfest better known as, “THE SLOW LANE”…22 Years ago.

And in that 22 years, it is only KEVJUNGLE who threw his season ticket at the directors box, and marched out the front door with the blessed Martin O’Neill.

22 years of sitting on 53,000 pairs of hands, “wondering what Dermot will do” for 53,000 sickofantic suckups, is deserving of seeing the end of Celtic PLC’s anti red head policy, with the return of WGS as manager.

    Why?

Well he is the only Desmond luvvie not to see a 2nd term in the dugout.

    Why?

    Who cares.

    For me:

Darren O’Dea with his long trench coat, standing on the touchline like a ‘real’ tough ticket, playing the Arsenal way, park the bus – mug on the break, would and rattle utter fk out of 53,000 idealist Timmy tippy tappy dreamers cages, would be well worth the 22 years wait, up the Galtee Mountains with Parkheid Jungle Revolutionaries, ah…the memories.

Anyone with any idea as to why Dermot Desmond is meeting (and deciding upon) managerial candidates??

Why does the board allow one individual- who is not the Chief Exc or even majority shareholder- to take such decisions?

Leaving aside the legal limitations of his position- what footballing knowledge does he have, including in relation to changing managerial tactics, systems etc.??

Yes, a non-majority shareholder (often called a minority shareholder) can legally “own” and control a company. Under corporate and UK law, a single owner holding \(50\%\) or less of shares can run, manage, or fully control a business depending on how the company’s legal framework is structured.

  27. So after a 5 month global search, it’s MoN or Robbie Keane.

Six people were stabbed and 24 arrests were made at Arsenal’s victory celebrations in north London, the Metropolitan Police has said.

Most of those injured in the stabbings were not seriously hurt, but a man in his 20s was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition after being attacked in Hornsey Road shortly before 20:30 BST on Sunday. Police said he is now in a stable condition.

More than 500 officers were deployed for the event, which attracted hundreds of thousands of supporters celebrating Arsenal’s Premier League title success.

Police said one officer suffered a slash wound to the hand and another was struck on the head by objects thrown during the celebrations.

The 24 arrests included 10 people suspected of assaulting police officers, three on suspicion of sexual assault and one on suspicion of grievous bodily harm over an attack that caused a head injury.

A large group of Arsenal football fans celebrate whilst gathered on the roof and structure of Highbury Station. Several supporters wear the club’s red and white shirts, one fan waves a large Arsenal flag, and another holds a flare that releases thick plumes of pinkish-red smoke into the air.

The LFB said 75 people had to be rescued from a height at the parade

Four police vans in Theberton Street, Islington were left with dents and broken lights.

On Sunday, London Fire Brigade warned fans not to climb on rooftops after crews had to rescue 75 stranded fans.

In the evening, once most of the crowds had gone home, there were six stabbings, the Met said.

Officers were granted extra stop and search powers overnight.
