Sectarian, racist, why not genocide too?

906

Not one of you will be surprised at reports this morning that Celtic escaped punishment for “sectarian chanting” when the club and its fans were not, and never have been, accused of sectarian behaviour.  Last month one Irish title suggested Celtic fans stood accused of racism before amending their online content to read sectarianism and eventually paying enough attention to zone in on “offensive chanting”.  If they’re going to make things up, I really would prefer they accused us of something a bit more original in Scottish football, like genocide.  Ironically it would be less offensive.

Celtic have been open to all since its inception and are supported by groups right across Scottish society in increasing numbers.  It’s the other lot, you know, them, who brought sectarian practices into the game.  From Neil McCallum, our first goal scorer, to Gary Hooper, our last, Celtic have never had this peculiar social deficiency.  Never.

The SPL decision not to act against Celtic, after a Strathclyde Police match commander complained, was assured, as Celtic could demonstrate they had previously taken action “all reasonably practicable steps” to prevent what the league called “chanting in support of the IRA”.  Both Neil Lennon and Peter Lawwell have spoken in unequivocal terms on this subject in recent weeks.

The league goes on to say, “Such behaviour is unacceptable and unwelcome at SPL matches.”  All the league have done here is pitched the ball back into Celtic’s court to prevent a reoccurrence.  I don’t fancy that job.

At the last home game against AM there was a different match commander, there was no harassment by the police or videoing etc, hence no trouble at all’

That was what I understood was going to happen.

  2. I am not particularly anti-Dunfermline but I absolutely detest John Yorkston. After his umbrage when Sutty said it exactly as was in 2003, he ( Yorkston) then says ( as the DR say pleads, that Aluko should not be banned! Astonishing.

It’s enough to make me wish Dunfermline get relegated on the narrowest of margins on goal difference. See then how he’ll wish that farce of a penalty should not have been awarded.

have the board made any statement on the hun allocation of tickets and how these will be distributed ??

This question has been out there since the hearts protestations, wonder if we’ll hear anything on this.

  5. Interesting programme on BBC2 last night about RBS.

I was struck by how incredibly shifty, uncomfortable, and evasive Sir Fred Goodwin looked at an investors meeting in 2008, just a few weeks before the bank was effectively taken over by HM Government, bringing an end to the independence of a major Scottish institution founded nearly 300 years ago and threatening its long term prospects for survival. Hindsight is a great thing, but it’s amazing to me there wasn’t a run on the bank immediately after that performance.

My thoughts turned to another troubled Scottish institution currently run by a financially creative fabulist.

It would be unfair to compare Craig Whyte with Sir Fred Goodwin though, because:

    * Fred The Shred is a millionaire

    * Fred was never banned from being a company director

    * Fred had a long and successful track record in banking before the ABN AMRO fiasco. He had a solid reputation and his credentials were in the public domain. He wasn’t some shady mystery man who had been hanging around the docks of Monaco for a few years before popping up in Scotland amidst wild stories about billionaire wealth.

    * Fred’s cleaner got paid.

    Ho ho ho, Merry Christmas!

If they are trying to divide the support they are failing spectacularly.

UEFA’s decision will also be a massive blow for the Scottish media – who can only cry wolf so many times on what Celtic supporters sing – in fact I think they have already passed the point where UEFA take them seriously.

Have you read the cfc board’s submission against the proposed legislation? From your post it seems you haven’t, if not I recommend you do.

Whilst it may not go far enough in your eyes, it is far different picture from what you paint.

Did you read the statements from the board in praise of the green brigade after the past 2 home games? Is this trying to divide the support.

Your post really does show a real issue we’ll need to resolve. Yes the board deserve criticism for many things they’ve done and failed to do, they deserve criticism for the mistakes they’ve made. But your post is inaccurate that they are trying to divide the support and they are in no way supporting the offensive behaviour at football bill – that is a lie.

I am interested in what evidence you have to support the accusation you make in terms of the board supporting the new legislation. Unsure why you would make something like that up – if you don’t have hard evidence that is exactly what you’re doing.

The police using anti terrorist laws and special branch officers to harrass any football fan is outrageous and we should continue to highlight and fight this this, I’m unsure what the board could do about the specific example highlighted by Phil Mac, however I do accept they could do more about the policing strategies adopted at CP – I believe there is ongoing discussions including all parties in this area.

    Hello Paul

to me this is the key paragraph in your article. I think they’ll be watching our supporters like hawks now, so it’s down to us to keep the singing going but get rid of the add ons and maybe trim a few tunes that could see us being reported again. The GB create a brilliant atmosphere at the games and to me they have enough in their repertoire to get the place buzzing without giving them something to clutch at.

And we always will be painted with the same brush for as long as the Celtic management through its commercial ties with THEM continues to acquiesce in the perpetuation of the Old Firm tag.

I mentioned at the tale end of the last stream that certain add ons, (sung on Sunday by some) in this particular context to Dominic Behan’s ‘We’re all off to Dublin in the Green’, could be sectarian in nature. Not the song, not the lyrics, but a deliberate add on, by some, which at best, is gratuitously offensive. That would not provide much of a defence for those singing it though now would it?

    Bjmac,

would you be referring to the statement about the crime statistics?

I dont think that was specifically about the new law, I get my opinion from lawwells initial reaction to the announcement of the proposed legislation, he was very much in support from what I rememeber.

As for their support of the greem brigade, a pat on the head for a well behaved pet, the board are responsible for the treatement of all the supporters who enter Celtic park, we have witnessed for the last two years the heavy handed treatment by first the boards security team and now the polis, the board had and have every right to demand explanations from the polis exactly why they are treating Celtic supporers as terrorists, especially when the support have not broken the law, not only have they the right to know the answers to this question, they have the responsibility to advise the customers why they have given the polis permission to treat the supporters like terrorists.
