Sectarian, racist, why not genocide too?

906

Not one of you will be surprised at reports this morning that Celtic escaped punishment for “sectarian chanting” when the club and its fans were not, and never have been, accused of sectarian behaviour.  Last month one Irish title suggested Celtic fans stood accused of racism before amending their online content to read sectarianism and eventually paying enough attention to zone in on “offensive chanting”.  If they’re going to make things up, I really would prefer they accused us of something a bit more original in Scottish football, like genocide.  Ironically it would be less offensive.

Celtic have been open to all since its inception and are supported by groups right across Scottish society in increasing numbers.  It’s the other lot, you know, them, who brought sectarian practices into the game.  From Neil McCallum, our first goal scorer, to Gary Hooper, our last, Celtic have never had this peculiar social deficiency.  Never.

The SPL decision not to act against Celtic, after a Strathclyde Police match commander complained, was assured, as Celtic could demonstrate they had previously taken action “all reasonably practicable steps” to prevent what the league called “chanting in support of the IRA”.  Both Neil Lennon and Peter Lawwell have spoken in unequivocal terms on this subject in recent weeks.

The league goes on to say, “Such behaviour is unacceptable and unwelcome at SPL matches.”  All the league have done here is pitched the ball back into Celtic’s court to prevent a reoccurrence.  I don’t fancy that job.

Good points which I hadn’t really considered. But (taking Rangers out of it altogether) what if a team is winning 5-0? Still right to double the ‘routine’ punishment?

Either way the quality of the MIB is the more important issue.

  6. Curly , i think you win with that one although in the words of Queen it might be a wee bit “Under Pressure” . You never know , TTT will probably change the spec again.

  7. Sanna,

II don’t disagree it would be difficult – but goodness me NEVER impossible. If there is a strong enough will, there is a way. It will take a monumental effort but it is 100% achievable.

I’m not aware of the board hi-jacking previous meetings for their own agenda or purpose, that is disappointing.

However, we have enough supporters groups with enough clout to drive this through, if it is what people want.

I believe the biggest problem could be logistics and who can and how to vote. It needs a group of fans to drive this, a group independent from the plc.

Who on here would get involved ? Would you Canamalar, if not do you see merit in what is being suggested? Assuming it can be done with no plc interference!

  23. I don’t think that Celtic fans singing songs about the IRA at the match is a good thing and it is time we stopped it.

Not because our enemies—the establishment club and their friends in the press and the police—say it must stop, but because I feel if we are the inclusive club we pride ourselves on being then we wouldn’t want to drive a wedge between those who hold different views on this subject in our own support. Plus things have moved on in Ireland and we should too.

The Celtic-supporting Protestant soldier in the British army who has no links with Ireland is just as entitled to feel at home at Celtic Park as a Celtic fan as the Irish RC from Derry who has felt the rough end of the stick from that very army.

I am quite sure that if a conference was held to determine a list of songs could be arrived at that we, as a support, could put forward as the definitive recommended repertoire for Celtic fans. Songs that pay tribute to our heritage but respect the sensitivities of others.

A conference to decide the list by a democratic vote could draw attendees from the Celtic Supporter’s Association, Celtic Trust, prominent site reps from CQN, Celtic Underground, KDS, Season Ticket and Shareholders, etc

The Celtic Board should not be involved as they don’t allow us to decide on their business. This is our business.

As our young fans see their counterparts across the city being able to sing the most vile and racist songs with impunity I can see our own support become more radical in what they sing. I think that is a shame.

Let them sink to the gutter with their hatred but don’t take our young ones with them. We should set an example of our own volition and shame them.

Sure as it has been stated on here those who hate us would –as they have done in the past—get a story out of two drunks singing Up The Ra a mile from the stadium, even when we are impeccably behaved in the main at the match. That is not going to change no matter what. They will invent stories against us if there are none to report.

I can understand those who would sing the add-ons just to spite these narrow-minded bigots who are against us, but this is to play into their hands.

Time for us, as a support, to define what is offensive and then defend that right–with whatever it takes.

    All IMHO of course.
