Seeds struggle but a Celtic win is possible

126

Third round seeds could not produce a win between them in last night’s Champions League qualifiers.  While Ajax earned a respectable draw away to POAK, APOEL Nicosia lost at home to Qarabag and Dinamo Zagreb drew at home to Ferencvaros, bottom seed on only 3.5 points.

Dinamo Kiev lost away to Bruges and Copenhagen scored late to secure a draw in Belgrade against Red Star.

Celtic get a chance to put that right in Cluj tonight.  The Romanian champions are four games into their domestic league and have already eliminated two higher seeds: Astana and Maccabi Tel-Aviv, so there should be no surprises for Neil Lennon.

Neil’s selection questions all surround defence.  Jozo Simunovic and Chris Jullien are both available after weekend suspensions, but the biggest concern is over the availability of Hatem Abd Elhamed.  The Israeli retired with a dead leg on Saturday after an impressive first half.

Celtic managed to get the heavy lifting done in the first leg of each of their two previous qualification ties.  I might be getting carried away after Saturday, but a win tonight would help preparations for the playoff round.  Anything seems possible when you play like that.

  6. I realise Sevco fans would consider me obsessed but here`s another one from the BBC site.

They had an article re what we might have learned about each team judging by their first weekend performances.

As one would expect, strengths and weaknesses were discussed . Next week`s opponents were not mentioned in the case of eleven of the twelve teams. This, however, is how the assessment of Motherwelll began:

`Celtic may have started the season by scoring seven goals against St Johnstone, but this weekend they will come up against a Motherwell side yet to concede in the Premiership or League Cup. Prior to their trip to Livingston they had also hammered home 13 goals in four games.

“The good thing is – Celtic won’t have seen how we can play,” said manager Stephen Robinson after the 0-0 draw with Livingston.`

    Hmm..

  8. Mullet and Co (from page 1) this is what interests me. This is my bread and butter. A good summation.

Hoping to find tonight’s game over here. Too damn hot for golf today, so inertia ruled.

I have absolutely no first hand knowledge of out Club’s finances, though I still keep in touch with some who give me direction.

We are well capitalised. Some would argue, too well.

Too many on follow follow, et al, read our numbers and make uneducated stabs as to what they mean.

    Celtic Plc are ridiculously healthy

(disclaimer- the aforementioned is not a recommendation to trade nor should one be inferred. The value of stocks can…..etc)

I never thought of that. Sevco fans will see it as the Beeb helping us by giving inside information on our next opponents !

  10. Nervous excitement starting to build…I fully expect us to score tonight…unfortunately I fully expect us to concede as well…so a score draw…not a bad away result

To return from Romania undefeated would be a great result. Our recent form would suggest we could score over there, but past results, including under Neil Lennon, must temper our optimism. Forward attacking tactics can pay off of course but any team with quick counter passing and movement could cause us problems. Too many on here are planning for the next round, just as they were this time last year, before blaming the whole thing on Dedryck Boyata who didn’t actually play, but had he had he would still have been as much to blame than if he hadn’t which he had.

One game at a time remember. That would be this one. Come on the Bhoys in Green.

  13. Wee BGFC, congratulations on now being a fully feldged member of the Mad Hoose. Wonder if you might be the youngest on here. Although going by some of the fall us that have happened on here over recent years, you might be the youngest without being the most childish!

In an hour’s time we will know the starting 11, but we might not necessarily know the formation…..
