SEEING RED: THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN JENZ, BROONY AND VENNEGOOR OF HESSELINK

MORITZ JENZ escaped seeing red and joining Celtic stars such as Scott Brown and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink who have been banished for celebrating a goal with the fans.

The towering German shared the joy with the travelling support after heading in a superb second goal in the 3-1 win over Ross County in Dingwall at the weekend.

Jenz had previously been booked by match official Don Robertson and former referee Des Roache insisted the on-loan defender should have been dismissed for contravening the laws of the game that state any player leaving the pitch and entering the crowd should be cautioned.

OFF AND RUNNING…Moritz Jenz prepares to celebrate with the Celtic fans after heading in the second goal against Ross County.

Interestingly, Roache does NOT agree with the law, but told the Get Involved Referee podcast: “Celtic have got away with one there because Jenz should be missing two games two weeks down the line.

“If you jump into the crowd or take your top off it’s an automatic yellow card, so it should have been a second caution. I know it was late on in the game, tensions are high, but laws are laws – it should have been a caution.

“I actually think that kind of celebration and euphoria should be encouraged. As someone who likes to see goals, don’t dull it. I don’t agree with the law, but it is the law and it should have been applied.

FAN-TASTIC…Giorgis Giakoumakis joins in with Moritz Jenz as the Cetic players and supporters acclaim the second goal in Dingwall.

“I think the way they look at it is that it could endanger the safety of the fans. There could be a crush, which I understand. But have a feel for the game. Is it that bad a thing to do? No.”

Not so lucky in the past have been former skipper Brown and Dutch striker Vennegoor of Hesselink who have been dismissed for being too happy following a goal.

Brown, who had been booked previously, was sent off by Bobby Madden after hitting a last-gasp winner in a 1-0 triumph over Kilmarnock at Rugby Park on February 17 2019.

DUTCH TREAT…Jan Veneggoor of Hesselink hails a strike for Celtic. On this occasion, he was not dismissed for being overly-delighted and sharing emotions with the Hoops support.

Vennegoor of Hesselink suffered an identical fate with another late points-clincher against Inverness Caley Thistle in the Highlands on January 28 2007.

Fussy ref Iain Brines had already flashed a yellow card at the frontman for protesting at a throw-in decision which TV pictures later proved the official had got wrong.

Vennegoor of Hesselink scored with almost the last kick of the ball before celebrating with the supporters. That was enough to earn a second booking and being invited to leave proceedings.

Celtic argued about the close proximity of the fans behind the goal and that the player’s natural momentum had taken him over the line, but the hitman was still hit with a two-game ban by the spoilsports at the SFA.
