“Sell Out Saturday, show everyone the SPL doesn’t need the Old Firm to thrive”. Discuss.

You have to admire the Aberdeen fans, and fans of every other club in the league, even Kilmarnock fans, who are clearly infuriated by the actions of their chairman.  For perhaps the first time in history they have stood up to their clubs and football administrators and effected real and genuine change in our game.

Aberdeen fans produced this Sell-out Saturday graphic, urging people to “show everyone the SPL doesn’t need the Old Firm to thrive”.  By ‘Old Firm’ I am sure they don’t mean the cash-cow rivalry Celtic had with Rangers, they mean without Rangers, and without Celtic too.

For every other club in the SPL, Celtic are now their most precious visiting brand.  For fans of every other club in the SPL, Celtic are a competitive irrelevance.  This season our income is likely to be greater than that of every other club in the league.  We pay superstar wages while, for the most part, they pay real world footballers real world compensation.

In short, the SPL doesn’t need the SPL to thrive.  The clubs may (or may not) believe they need Celtic to pay bills, but recent events have demonstrated that might not be the case.

There is another problem to consider.  If the SPL keeps Celtic, in a decade or so they will have Newco-Rangers, and the whole dysfunctional business will start all over again.  Kick Celtic out now and Newco-Rangers will never materialise in the manner it would if Celtic remained.

SPL fan power has one more club to sort out.

I know that things are relatively quiet on both the transfer front and also down govan way (today at least)….

But is this the best you can come up with Paul?

Celtic will be/should be leaving the SPL because no one can catch us?

So much for the brave new dawn of Scottish football that youv’e been trying to flog for the last 3 months. Dissappointing.

It is difficult to know what will and wont work when the Scottish fan base is disorganised as it is at the moment. I am convinced that a type of fans’ ‘union’ (please not in industrial union sense. It has to work in harmony) needs to be set up so that whatever is agreed, is acceptable and beneficial to all clubs. I saw in another comment and have said so myself that there is not only no reason but actually every reason why Celtic supporters should lead on this. We are the biggest, richest and strongest and therefore best equipped to determine what and how progress is made as our money would be the main finance involved. No matter what, your basic idea and suggestion of mutual cooperation, for me anyway, are at the heart of any reform movement by fans for the survival of Scottish football. It also takes decision-making on gate money away from the economic Frankensteins who ‘operate’ the game.

I’ve not been too impressed by the youth players of late but the better ones weren’t in that line-up.

The Twarzdiks (sp?) have a chance although not sure at Celtic-level. McGeoch and Paul George should be given time in the first team this season along with Watt… the rest I don’t think have much change at our level. Although I think it’s always hard to tell with the defenders but they are all so slightly built that I wonder if they’ll ever make it.

  7. I get the feeling that there will be SPL 2 next season. I think there will also be a mechanism put in place for SPL teams to invite ateam into the SPL 1.

    Guess who??

  8. I feared yesterday that the agreement reached between the SFA and Sevco regarding future player signing embargo, was a major decision, which effectively ends all punishment for newco and allows them (with some small degree legitimacy) to continue with their claim of unbroken history.

I hoped i was wrong, but listening to some of today’s shortbread, that fear was re-enforced. They think they have got away with it …..

“allows them (with some small degree legitimacy) to continue with their claim of unbroken history. ”

No matter what they would have claimed that anyway.

Its an area thats never going to be unequivocally agreed given the polarisation of views.

For me the history is as good as gone. When Rangers Football Club PLC goes into liquidation it will have gone.

    Officially.

You are absolutely correct – no debate here.

No one more than me will celebrate the imminent demise of RFC(IA) …. but don’t under estimate the implications of yesterday’s “punishment” – it gives them an out and MSM are already on it and will not give that up easily.

  11. We should also consider what we ask for when we want to play in the EPL. Where is our point of entry?

Where is the sporting meritocracy that allows us in an English league at the expense of another?

  12. Paul

They’ll learn to love us… Again.

Remember Hearts and Burley’s short love affair – a string of decent results and East coasters whispering ‘This year mibbe…’?

The first time they rolled in to Celtic Park they took up the full away allocation. the full curve of the corner if I’m not mistaken? Only that defunct team used to take up more space…

Burley jumped ship. The Burghers referred to it as an ‘if’ moment – ‘That year, mibbe, if…’

And next time the East coasters visited, we had secured the title and they had nought to play for – lucky if 2 or 3 buses turned up.

And that’s what the Directors know will happen. Know it in their hearts. They are setting up their excuses. As opposed to consulting with creatives and ideas men to get crowds back.

Cheaper bloody seats would be a start.

But anyway, they’ll soon welcome us back – for the next three years or so. Until the Galacticos that Mr Green and The Obese Paul Le Guen buy in in the next few days storm their way back into the hearts and minds of the ‘fodder’.

As Bomber was famously quoted – ‘The only games I was interested in as a player and a supporter was the Celtic games. Nothing else. And maybe the Champion’s League games. But they were the only games.’

Can’t buy PR like that. Can’t buy it nowhere. No How.

  13. Couple of thoughts. Our XI playing Thistle this afternoon is in essence what sevco have to look forward to this season. Only at two levels below. No guarnatees they’ll win the league – my view though is still that they won’t be around this season.

HJK play this afternoon and lead from the first leg. Couple of points in our favour then – we can see them play competitively while they can only see us either from last season or in friendlies this. Further, with their lead from first leg, we can scout them and only them, and fans can make plans for Finland not Iceland. Minor points maybe, but all could be signifcant.

    Wow strong stuff!!………….

As we know Celtic is more than a football club.

Stop watching the “hun” they are dead.

“it gives them an out and MSM are already on it and will not give that up easily”

    —————

The MSM will never give that up ,at least this generation of them – its how they’re hardwired.

Perhaps in a few years time things will change – I seriously doubt it though.

For me its just just one more reason ,were it needed, not to read far less take heed of anything the MSM say.

One of their favourite cliches is that football is “ALL about opinions”.

While in proper journalism some opinion is perfectly valid the critical stuff is all about investigating and running stories based on fact.

Almost all MSM journalism in this country , paper or other media, avoids fact like the plague. If it didnt the truth surrounding Rangers would have been in the public domain long before now. Early exposure of that truth might actually have saved Rangers but the MSM were happy to ignore facts at Murray’s prompting/ bullying and deal only in trite opinion ( eg Who’ll win any particular game/ league ? / who’s the best player in the country ? / just how paranoid are the Celtic internet bampots ? – that sort of mindless drivel ).

The irony of the critical role played by the MSM and their dereliction of duty in the downfall of the very institution they thought they were promoting cannot fail to be obvious even to the less cerebral of them.

    Malone 19,

Agree that many of the youngsters need to increase their upper body strength.

For too many it was men against boys , which , given it was Thistle’s first team was always going to be the case. In saying that, I think our second 11 should be able to compete with Their first
