Semi-pro circuit a weak challenge for youths

196

A one-season trial in the Lowland League for Celtic’s B team, the fifth tier of Scottish football, got the green light yesterday.  It will present nowhere near the level of challenge I think our youth players need, but at least they will face men, not aspiring boys who themselves may end up on the semi-pro circuit.

They need to compete against sides the calibre of the Falkirk team that visited Celtic Park on Scottish Cup duty last month.  They are currently mid-table in League One, but have the wherewithal needed to test and develop the best of Celtic’s youths.

There was a hope that the current economic position of the SPFL’s lower league clubs would make them agreeable to any opponent that could muster more than a dozen visitors per game, but despite the financial argument, online fan pressure groups like to say “no” to pretty much anything, so that proposition never got off the ground.  We will see if the impact of forgoing this income to the benefit of the Lowland League changes minds going forward.

    My objection is to you bracketing Unionists along with Brexiteers as though they are one and the same.

    They’re not, and you know they’re not.

    Which makes me wonder why you insist on lumping them together.

    IF Eddie Howe is the next manager ….

    …. I wouldn’t be surprised if one or more of Junior Stanislas, Steve Cook, Adam Smith and Asmir Begovic sign.

    Winger, CB, RB, GK – all positions needing attention.

    Hot Smoked – I think your football update easily beats mine in terms of quality and human interest.

    Mine might win in terms of frequency though.

    How a 3-foot waif can kick a ball over a 2-metre fence with such regularity is beyond me.

    “Don’t lean back when shooting!”

    🤔🤭

    You reminded me of a Big Jimmy style joke:

    Man in Butchers: Half a pound of bacon,please.

    Butcher: Lean back?

    So the guy did.

  15. Hot Smoked – Regeneration has hit a lot of Glasgow.

    I am in the old Convent 26 houses in our wee crescent or Place as it’s called built 23years ago 3 bed 2 bath and loads if outside space and great neighbours and bought it off plan for next to nothing and love it.

    You can get a bus from Buchanan St Station to Glasgow Cross and then walk down the Saltmarket. No buses go down the Saltmarket…Not even Brexit Buses…LOL

    Or….you could get a Taxi from the bus Station ?

  19. With quite a few `Ifs` involved, what about this selection to begin next season:

    Barkas

    Ajer Welsh Jullien Taylor

    Turnbull Soro McGregor

    Forrest Edouard Johnston

  20. Like many others I am waiting impatiently for our new manager announcement. ( How can we talk Celtic when there is nothing to talk about )

    I hope its Eddie Howe, if so I can forgive the seemingly abysmal lack of foresight. But anger is turning to a more serious apathy.

    If we are kept waiting all this time for really unimaginative and unimpressive announcements then there will be severe consequences.

    Our custodians must know this.

    HH to all.

  21. Hot Smoked

    Are you anticipating that Eddie will still be with us next season? Unlikely imo.

    HH

  22. Apart from `poor` this has also been a strange season.

    a) Covid ,at the outset, leaving Sevco untouched whilst affecting us and Aberdeen severely; it then affected us dramatically after the mistake that Dubai turned out to be;

    b) Signings that turned out to be inexpicably poor :Barkas, Duffy and Ajeti,for instance;

    c) Loanees who blew hot and cold;

    d) Broonie losing that vital few per cent of impact

    e) Same for Calmac;

    f) Long term loss of Jullien from an already dodgy area;

    g)Sacking of the manager;

    h) Sevco`s seldom if ever mentioned in Scotland penalties against record combined with their equally remarkable Red Cards AFTER the events record;

    i) The MIB`s even more blatant bias.

    I `ll leave the ` We needed an Old Firm` scenario for others to argue.
