Set-piece plans fulfilled and conceding chances

273

Last week we discussed how Celtic’s attacking set-piece strategy was to aim for Christopher Jullien, while others attempt to block defenders impeding his run, and what the arrival of Shane Duffy would do for options.  An hour into Saturday’s game in Dingwall provided the answer.  While Jullien made his customary run to meet a corner kick, Duffy picked his moment to rise and head his opening goal for Celtic.

Before the arrival of Jullien last year, Celtic’s corner kick effectiveness was awful.  We are not quite back to the Martin O’Neill era-level, but Chris and Shane have changed our threat level significantly.

Again, Albian Ajeti puts the ball in the net(i), his third goal since arriving last month.  We have seen so little of Ajeti that it is difficult to make a proper assessment of him, which makes his goal tally all the more impressive.

It seems incongruous that Vasilis Barkas had his best performance in the purple of Celtic in a game we won by five goals.  He made five saves, three of them particularly impressive, and County hit the woodwork twice.

As happy as Neil Lennon will be at the goals and manner of Celtic’s attacking play, he will be concerned we offered up so many chances to a weak Ross County team.  The years when Celtic could afford to simply out score the opposition passed long ago, we cannot continue to offer up the chances County and Hamilton have enjoyed this season.  You know how this ends if not arrested.

If you ever get the chance you should go. Last time I was there you could see orcas passing the harbour (which to be fair was quite rare.) It’s a pity it’s so expensive (and a hassle) to get there but well worth it. Unless you like trees and dry weather that is :-)

  2. Did anyone buy the Ross County TV transmission for international viewing? How was the quality? Don’t fancy paying, bouncing out of bed at 01:30 to find out it’s crap. Is it the same broadcaster for St Mirren. Everything was ok with the sausage I had thanks to one of our Bhoys on here. Victory on Wednesday then we’re ready to win the league Saturday ala the currant Buns.

  3. P67 — you under play our malaise in the first half.

RC played the better football but went in 2-0 down.

We weren’t playing that badly just a case we gave them space and they used it.

We started better in the second half and went from there.

Good to see 5 substitutes being used just a case we need to get them on earlier.

JF (old) — So poor that others are starting to notice.

IS — Not sure what it is but not that impressed / timing was off — first 5 touches were karate kicks.

TR — we need him back especially as football is now a 16 man game.

“GK” — our best player / three not two excellent saves.

Great result but need to up our game somewhat.

SD — made a difference and played the game with enthusiasm.

    Other stuff …

Shetland wanting to be a crown dependency like Jersey — better thought out than the last time / someone has been working hard on all these little Nat rat fu**s — said in a Watergate stylee.

Interesting how this one will develop — Viking Shetland is just another episode of colonialization to get our heads around. And then you have Orkney and the genocide.

    Can of worms .

Nats / Not-Jacinda / Interim CMO / SG rubbish on the R number — they really are a shambles without a clue.

When the number is low / less than 1 / going down they are happy to discuss.

When the number is higher / more than 1 / growing then it isn’t important and other things are now centre stage.

Not a great advert for Team Scotland — they are so bad that I am sure that the SFA could do a better job.

Well on second thoughts it would be a draw.

  4. Generally it’s £25/28 for away games. I think £12.50 is very reasonable, for a game I wouldn’t see in normal times, por cierto.

  5. The Ross County stream was excellent, once I pressed “HOME” as the away one fell over at kick off. I don’t know if I got a different commentary team as a result but didn’t seem to be.

Interested to know how much Ross County got from it revenue-wise and the pricing is also interesting too – £15 for RC and £12.50 for St Mirren. I’m surprised the Buddies didn’t squeeze another few bob out.

I guess, for all obvious reasons, we are making it up as we go along. There is a part of me would love to see this, in addition to being at the game, an option for fans rather than putting up with the contempt Sky have for our game.

    HH

  6. In the ‘tougher’ games I’d expect us to go 4-4-2 and not 3-5-2 as James can’t do a wing back role on his own and we still need that animal on the left. We’d be ripped to shreds defensively.

No idea what implications this has for our 3 main CHs. In a 3-5-2 you need one big commanding one in the middle who can defend and walk the ball out (mixture of Julien and Duffy to me) and 2 mobile ones with a right and left peg in their proper places. Watching Ajer move out on the left hand side was painful.

Do we have 2 DMs to protect them ? or do we move to a pressing game that we don’t seem to be able to do currently? From the front Eddie (unlike Moussa) doesn’t press or defend.

Great array of talent but no discernible system to me.

  7. BW @ 2.24

Interesting point about getting SKY out of the picture — pun intended.

I would even goes as far that Not-Jacinda sorry Nicola could use it as a cornerstone of her post CoViD19 industrial policy — improve the b/band network and invest in the servers needed to put out the games across the web.

That is how much I hate AW’s commentary.

  8. From Glasgow Times:

Celtic have had a second bid rejected for Charlton’s Alfie Doughty.

Herald and Times Sport understands the Hoops made a second offer for the midfielder after their initial bid was booted out by the Addicks. However their second attempt, believed to be in the region of around £650,000, has also been kicked into touch.

We told recently how manager Lee Bowyer admitted they had received an offer from Celts for Doughty, 20, but were not interested in the reported £400,000 fee the Scottish champions had brought to the table. And it is understood they are holding out for more cash, though they still do not want to lose the player.

Doughty’s contract at The Valley expires in June 2021 and Neil Lennon’s side could potentially offer the midfielder a pre-contract in January and steal him away for nothing next summer.

Luton Town have also had an offer rejected for Doughty this summer.

  9. Very strange. On the day when the wannabe Trump/Putin leaders of the Uk are discussing a bill to break international law and further erode democracy in the uk (and being called out on it by three of their previous leaders to show the immensity of the occasion) the people supposedly interested in politics on the blog are more concerned with Shetland becoming a crown dependency.

    I call bullshit.

  10. MadMitch,

Sky have an ‘Old Firm’ franchise they sell to the English audience, that whets the palette of a Super Sunday at midday before such crackers as Burnley v Bournemouth to be hyped up :)

Not sure they want that lost as they don’t care about the rest.

Wouldn’t it be great to have it broadcast by someone wanting to sell the product and who sees the value of it to the wider identity of the country and economy.

  11. Gents ( and Ladies )

    Interesting comments.

Point to consider : It the government expect us to download an app for track and trace then the football authorities must realise that similar advanced digital technology can be used to pick up games.

    Cheers and HH to all.

BoJo and his street theatre regarding the Brexit talks is just this week’s raw meat for the “UKIP” balcony.

Shetland and sudden desire to grow potatoes and develop a tax dodging industry is a much bigger / longer term play — however it was played out in 77/78 so it should only be a surprise in that it took them so long to put it out.

I was abroad during the 2014 referendum so I don’t know if it was part of the discussion then — if it wasn’t then it makes its appearance now as very interesting.

    Consequently all above board.

Missed the question from last night.

Anyway interesting to see the question come into play now.

Plus the crown dependency angle is a new one.

You have to ask who on the Shetland Council could come up with an idea so left field?

Plus some of the reasons looked as if they had been thought up by a PR agency?

Not a peep out of them for 40 years then this?

  16. Big Shane is 12/1 to score the 1st goal v St Mirren.

he is also 12/1 to score the last goal.

He is 0/30 ( just over 3/1) to score at Anytime.

    With Bet365.

I will be having Shane in some bets for every game from now on.

  20. I think its about time Celtic issued a statement on Eddy. This nonsense from Arsenal, should be nipped in the bud.20 million with 2.5 million in add ons is insulting to our club. This from a team, looking for 37 million for Lacazette. We should publicly state, its 35 million,or dont bother trying to talk to us.Tiresome,to say the least, for our support. If they came in with the money, and Eddy wanted to go,fair enough, but trying to get cut price bargains, because the player plays in Scotland ,should be hit on the head.

Sick to the back teeth, every day, reading about Eddy being hunted.

Gave up on dry weather years ago, but I do like trees.

Definitely on the list, along with Orkney, Skye, Iceland and Norway, and possibly NW Canada/Alaska.

Was supposed to go on a trip this summer to Malawi with WeeBGFC, MissBGFC, a couple of guys from the band – organised by teachers and pupils from St Margaret’s in Airdrie. We were going to play for prisoners in various jails, including a max-security one, in local villages, orphanages, etc.

  23. I think Christie is one of the players who wants away, his Dad was interviewed and declared he was good enough for the Premier League.

I too think that he has been pushing himself forwards taking all corners and set pieces near goal but also seems to have got a bit greedier and not passing preferring to go on his own.

Is he not with the same agent as Ajer? If so then we should be selling

  24. Think the Arsenal story is a load of bull.

I’d hate us to be issuing statements based on BS msm stories.

  25. BIG WAVY,

You don’t half push the theory,we have a LB problem.Again ,your utter dislike of Greg Taylor, comes to the fore.If you mean, back up for him, fair enough, but I doubt it.Its clear Lenny wants to play a back 3,but I will say this,Greg Taylor is a much better option,at LWB,than Jamesy is at LWB,or RWB.We all love Frimpong, but so many of his faults are not picked up by the fans.Hits the ball too far in front ,so many times, fails to deliver from good crossing positions when he gets to the byeline.Like everyone else,I expect the boy to improve, and will give him time. Not so the case with yourself and Taylor. For Gods sake ,give it a rest.

  26. BIGBHOY

Agree re. Christie , it looks like it’s me, me, me.

If we can get Armstrong type money take it and buy Lewis Ferguson

  27. BIG WAVY,

On what premise do you think the Arsenal bid is”A load of bull”.Reported today, from a very good journalist, that they have submitted 2 bids.Seems to be in the know,a tad better than yourself.Think I will listen to him.No offence.

  28. I think we should play Duffy in the middle of the back three. He’ll be able to walk Ajer and Jullien through the games better from that position.
