Set-piece, VARless, first save of the season!

248

How frustrating is it that we could control the game against Newco for 90 minutes yet still put our finger on the self-destruction button?   It is equally frustrating that this level of control has been absent against so many lesser opponents.  Why that is, is a question that will asked around these parts for years.

I liked the balance of our play: controlled, with sufficient cover that the defence was never stretched.  Ryan Christie stuck to his role, without trying to win the jackpot every time in possession.

Mohamed Elyounoussi scored with a glorious diving header, should have added a second and was a constant threat when linking with his strike partner, Odsonne Edouard.  Odsonne created the goal and would have doubled the advantage, but for his shot hitting the undercarriage of McGregor in the Newco goal.

When is a trip in the box not a penalty?  We both know the answer to that.  VAR has not removed controversy from the English game so I do not anticipate it will solve our problems here, but surely, surely, the trip on Odsonne would have resulted in a penalty awarded under video review.

VAR would also have seen that Alfredo Morelos was red carded for his attack on Stephen Welsh, we await to see if the SFA video review panel is sufficiently motivated to act.

Season 2020-21 will not be remembered fondly for our goalkeeper performances, however, Scott Bain’s save from a Kent volley yesterday might just count as the first impressive save of the campaign.  I cannot remember another.

I have praised Jonjo Kenny here but it was clear from early on yesterday he did not enjoy the step up in expectation.  Years from now you will be reminded that he conceded a corner that led to the Newco goal while in possession around the halfway line and a familiar pain will emerge.  What on earth?

The stat of this Celtic team: four of Newco’s last five goals against us were from set-pieces; three corners and a free kick into the box.  Martin O’Neill, who added analysis for Sky TV, must have had been dismayed.  His teams were seldom known for their passing game but they all understood how important it was to attack a set-piece.

Newco were no more than ordinary.  They had an exerting European tie on Thursday and could easily have conceded three or four goals, but they left with a point, surprising no one.

And for anyone living in the west of Scotland, this whole over-celebrating a point thing defines them to a T.

  1. TFOD2 “goal” yesterday — not a goal.

The ball went out of play from the corner kick and then returned into play.

Left footer playing in an out-swinger from the left that doesn’t make it to the line of the penalty spot.

The ball went out and then swung back in.

Also does the SPFL / SPL do drugs tests after games anymore?

Finally the SKY production team are at it and then some.

The assault by AM on SW — no replays or any mention of the incident.

They do what they have to do to help out their heroes / favourites.

  2. Also — JJK is the worst RB I have ever seen in a CFC jersey.

A cat on a hot tin roof has more composure and desire to go forward.

DT — very poor game until well into the second half.

CMcG — played well for the 30 seconds he had the ball at his feet.

    Otherwise playing hide and seek.

    RC — Need coaching.

    SB — needs a taxi.

Training game — the pace was glacial.

Who would have thought that the TFOD2 had a big game last Thursday.

JK — Not even a cone wrangler.

    Subs were embarrassing.

  3. It was a stonewall penalty it does not matter if there was contact or not (there was btw) I dont understand why the “experts” were not asked about the lunge ..only asked if there was contact which is irrelevant .

Point taken, but, “However, players committing accidental fouls that deny a goalscoring chance will now be cautioned instead. But deliberate fouls will still incur a red card.” I agree though, Collum would not have sent him off! por cierto.

  5. To my mind Ryan Christie done a lot of work off the ball yesterday, continually shutting down the space for Barisic to move into, I thought he did what he had to do very well, Hard hat on! por cierto

  6. I fear for our club. The mistake we have made is letting the genie out of the bottle. When we should have been screwing the lid down tight on sevco we did the opposite.

Next season will be the same as this season and I don’t think it matters who will be our manager. Sevco will win the vast majority of their games and when games are tight the sevco supporting referees will step in to help them out. When our games are tight the sevco supporting referees will step in to help our opponents out.

We are in a mess of our own making.

    Buckle up.

It’s going to be a bumpy ride.

  7. As a team we are really unfit. Standards do look to have fallen quite a bit, only an observation, por cierto.

passed through Largs friday afternoon, you were crossing the road at the golf club side, gave you a toot but you never seen me

and as to “the experts” all on sportscene, 3 former footballer an awe, said, no contact, no penalty, they dont know the feckin laws of the game.

  9. Thought the bhoys played well yesterday, well enough to deserve the win. Rangers pressed us for the first 10 mins or so but after we settled we were pretty much in full control. Despite that, the known issues we have were in full sight. So many issues with their goal –

    1. Why did Kenny concede a corner – surely they discussed this at length in the prep for the game. Set pieces were the most likely cause of any goal lost.

    2. Why did Ajer not attack the ball. Only Brown made an effort. Ajer should be marking their centre half and making sure he does not get a free header

    3. Why was Christie standing 3 or 4 yards behind everyone else thereby playing Morelos on-side.

    4. Why was Morelos not marked?

    5. Not sure if the ball went out of play – it looked close,

All of this is basic coaching. I am sure the coaches covered all of this in prep, so some of the players are just not listening, or are not good enough.

Collum should have given the penalty. Their player lunged in and Eddy therefore had to avoid him. Looking at the replays it could go either way but in the moment, a penalty was the correct call.

Thought Welsh had a very solid game as did Laxalt. Bain also looked comfortable and composed.

    Substitutions were bizarre.

  10. ………….but wee drew with the Scottish Champions, coulda shouda beat them.

Is that us out the woods now?

    cmon the ‘tic

  11. !!Bada Bing!! on

If Balogun hadn’t headed it,Goldson and Helander were next in line, marking a shambles yet again. A school team wouldn’t continually make the same mistakes.

  12. Ajer, very good with the ball at his feet, his timing in going for headers in play is good, but from set-pieces, for and against, needs a lot of work, por cierto.

    —————-

Yes, the genie is truly out the bottle in football terms and beyond. And it is all self inflicted.

We stood in solidarity with the huns yesterday. We conveniently forgot the cheating, the thuggish behaviour, the sectarian bile, the racism ( Do we now stand with the Rangers kit man ), the graffiti, the lies, the Covid spreaders, the birthday parties and last but certainly not least the poor facepainter.

We conveniently forgot the goalkeeper with the fractured skull after the latest MMA assault, but still we stood as one with the huns.

Oh at least we can be proud of one thing; We have greatly contributed to a mega increase in firework sales, paint sales, Buckfast sales, new bench sales and a million percent increase in flag sales.

    HH to all.

Oh well, at least this self

  15. For someone who wasn’t very bothered about yesterday’s game in the build up, I was left very frustrated at the full time whistle.

Quite simply, we should have won comfortably but this Celtic side find ways to drop points and fail, usually through a set piece.

Our lack of fight is shocking. When Collum books Eddie, we should be surrounding him and shouting for a penalty but instead we meekly accept it.

Same with Morelos raking his studs down Welsh’s groin, why are we not surrounding him and bringing it to Collum’s attention ? Why are we not blasting the linesman for not doing his job ?

Of the starting 11, I suspect only Welsh, CalMac and Turnbull will be around the starting side next season so our rebuild is colossal.

We’ve a mentality issue, a fitness issue and a very large set piece problem to fix but they are all low hanging fruit for a good manager.

I take solace from the fact that Sevco aren’t very good. That leaves are failure this season all the more galling but we can and we should be winning this title back next season with the right appointments.

  16. I met the Sky Sports Scotland Team at the time when they begun to be liquidated via a mutual acquaintance.

So, clearly a new club, clearly lost registration with SFA and league. Their staff lead by the boss stated they should be straight onto to top flight.

I more listened to begin with, there was no logic to their stance, no reference to sporting laws, league association rules, integrity, they just switched between being victims and supremacists and attempted to manipulate ever valid point I made with emotion.

When they won Scottish football from BT this season i knew there would be much less scrutiny in a season when the refereeing would be extra bent and their cheating would be beyond limits.

    BT called out refs.

Sky just have eyes and love for der hun.

  18. I don’t see us getting big money for Ajer.

A centre half who can’t jump and head a ball

  19. Not sure why people think VAR would change anything. VAR isn’t some machine with algorithms that makes subjective decisions on the field – it would be a team of Scottish referees who would have to decide whether the referee’s mistake was “clear and obvious”. Judging by the response on Sky and elsewhere (not including MON), is anyone confident that the Edouard decision would’ve been reversed?

  20. GEEBEE1978 on 22ND MARCH 2021 2:59 PM

You’re right, if anything, it would be used to further cement the referee’s decision, por cierto.

  21. Geebee – No, it wouldn’t have been reversed, but if Collum had given it, that would not have been reversed either. In the live situation, 9/10 referees would have given it on the spot.

The other issue regarding the Edouard non-penalty award is that it’s the kind that the Hun always get the advantage of and we get disadvantaged by.

In other words it’s never given against the Huns, they would always get it and vice versa for us.

Thugboy has previous in that area but I think that this was accidental. Being a still photo you can’t see the context but he gave Welsh a sore one…gollum even stopped the game to check on Welsh.

You are way ahead of us, first jag this friday then four month weight for the second one.

Don’t know if the time difference will do any good but at there mercy.

    I’m in the 75-79 group.😩

  25. From one of the TV camera views, it looked as though Collum’s sight was blocked on directly seeing the incident. Strangely enough, the last time he didn’t see a penalty incident was at Celtic Park, and, of course, he gave the penalty to Rangers (IL), por cierto

  26. It has got to be in the back of Collum’s mind though about the The Rangers complaining about him last season and that he didn’t get any games against them, losing hundreds of pounds, it just has to have an effect on his decision making, has to! por cierto

  27. I always thought that our team has lacked fitness ,eve the MON team especially in Europe.

Rumour has it that the trained two to three hours per day then you were on your own time.Just my opinion.

Ajer is fantastic at certain things. Sadly the things he’s not so good at are absolutely intrinsic to being a top defender!

Still my player of the season (from hell) by a country mile.

Given our form this season, and a Covid hangover for the football business, I fear we’ll be lucky to get much more than £20m in total for the main ‘wantaways’

  30. The chopping and changing of our back 4 / 5 this year has been brutal , even more so when a new keeper has been brought in …. Neil thought big squad , muddle through strategy…. brutally exposed in Europe….

We have good players , direction from a new leader is what we need …. WGS hit the nail on the head a few weeks ago ….. Celtic score a goal then fall in love with the ball ….. this season we fail to press home our advantage at 1-0 get jittery in the last 15 or 20 min … make a bunch of subs which disrupts our flow … more jitters ….
