Set-piece, VARless, first save of the season!

248

How frustrating is it that we could control the game against Newco for 90 minutes yet still put our finger on the self-destruction button?   It is equally frustrating that this level of control has been absent against so many lesser opponents.  Why that is, is a question that will asked around these parts for years.

I liked the balance of our play: controlled, with sufficient cover that the defence was never stretched.  Ryan Christie stuck to his role, without trying to win the jackpot every time in possession.

Mohamed Elyounoussi scored with a glorious diving header, should have added a second and was a constant threat when linking with his strike partner, Odsonne Edouard.  Odsonne created the goal and would have doubled the advantage, but for his shot hitting the undercarriage of McGregor in the Newco goal.

When is a trip in the box not a penalty?  We both know the answer to that.  VAR has not removed controversy from the English game so I do not anticipate it will solve our problems here, but surely, surely, the trip on Odsonne would have resulted in a penalty awarded under video review.

VAR would also have seen that Alfredo Morelos was red carded for his attack on Stephen Welsh, we await to see if the SFA video review panel is sufficiently motivated to act.

Season 2020-21 will not be remembered fondly for our goalkeeper performances, however, Scott Bain’s save from a Kent volley yesterday might just count as the first impressive save of the campaign.  I cannot remember another.

I have praised Jonjo Kenny here but it was clear from early on yesterday he did not enjoy the step up in expectation.  Years from now you will be reminded that he conceded a corner that led to the Newco goal while in possession around the halfway line and a familiar pain will emerge.  What on earth?

The stat of this Celtic team: four of Newco’s last five goals against us were from set-pieces; three corners and a free kick into the box.  Martin O’Neill, who added analysis for Sky TV, must have had been dismayed.  His teams were seldom known for their passing game but they all understood how important it was to attack a set-piece.

Newco were no more than ordinary.  They had an exerting European tie on Thursday and could easily have conceded three or four goals, but they left with a point, surprising no one.

And for anyone living in the west of Scotland, this whole over-celebrating a point thing defines them to a T.

  1. Was just listening to shortbread radio news as I tidied up my working day there, seems red card-red card has gotten all shy this afternoon after appearing on every news program possible over the last few weeks.

    I wonder why?

  2. The BBC just called Doulas Ross as Douglas Murray , leader of the Scottish Conservatives.

He made a statement along the lines of

“i dont care what the report states, here is my own facts”.

    red card red card.

Great post, in all its aspects.

Our team’s lining up and Scott Brown shoddy act of ‘solidarity’ are beneath contempt, and an insult to genuine anti-racist struggle. While finding Kudela guilty without trial they seem to have forgotten the support they gave our (loan) player Tonev at the SFA kangaroo court trial following the Shay Logan incident. Due process for one should be due process for all.

  5. Forget VAR it would give the chance for Willie Young or Stuart Dougal in the safety of the studio to show their bias with no consequences, Willie Collum is a cheat and would not need back up. We need crowds back. celtic will improve with new coaches, new players but more important celtic fans.

  6. It was definitely a pen for intent

However in 70 minutes it’s undoubtedly a pen and no one is discussing it

And refs view of it is very very clear

There is one simple test to assess the character of men and women on here …..ask them to state publicly their view on whether the Gers are a new football club or the same one. By their answer shall ye know their worthWinking face

  8. French Eddie may be a fine footballer and seems to enjoy the showboating stuff but the biggest tragedy for Celtic and Scotland was the personal issues that beset Leigh Griffiths who incidently should still be in his peak years. The guy was a better striker than Eddie and was a lethal penalty box goalador in his pomp. I reckon he would have pounced on some of those chances yesterday in the Rangers box.

  9. Lampard? I’ve been watching Chelsea under the new coach and they are significantly better ! play more freely, have energy to press and look like they have plan. What exactly does Lampard bring to Celtic? Granted, he would be well connected in England and is known international figure – could attract good players , but his coaching ability and player management/motivating is not yet proven.

Re collum – he didn’t allow advantage to take a quick freekick when we have overflow and space. I allowed advantage to continue when a free kick 22 yards out should have been the call – then at the death, call a foul when we were breaking with a man advantage.

He is a cheat – What is more annoying is that the players are not all over him pressuring his decisions , the coaches are not vocal enough in those BIG calls – we just lay down and take it on the chin because we know our place in Scotland – this is not how to drive change!!!!

  10. Rimtimtim from earlier – I think the cynical thing here has been the use of the alleged racist comment to Glen kamara by sevco and their apologists to get them off the hook re Roofe and balogun and what was a thuggish performance amd also an ineffectual footballing one. I might add goldson booting the ball into a player on the ground and then stamping on him just before the kamara incident too. Nrver mind the alleged goings on in the tunnel and the lock out of the slavia team. All disgraceful acts and sevco will be lucky to emerge with only a fine. I don’t know what uefa protocols are for refusing admission to an away dressing room and allegedly organising a premeditated assault in full view of uefa officials but of you get cited for a player not wearing a bib in the stand i can only imagine they are in the brown stuff.

Will they escape a ban or a stadium closure? It would be unvelievebly funny if they missed out on the CL because of it but I may be over optimistic there!

I don’t disbelieve Kamara although the player he accuses deserves due process and natural justice calls for innocence to be presumed until guilt is proven. He wasn’t reacting the way he did because he saw an opportunity to get his club off the hook. What has followed is a disgraceful misuse of the scourge of racism to excuse a club who practiced it for years and who are the club of choice for racists across the UK.

Scott Brown did a good thing. Kamara felt he was abused, Scott brown is in no position to question that and I liked his gesture.

What I didn’t like was James mcfudden talking about having to witness sickening scenes in relation to the alleged abuse. That is just a fabrication. We witnessed a guy say a thing but we don’t know what it was. Fair enough if these guys had ever come out of inbox after a match day and called out tens of thousands singing actual racists songs, guys doing nazi salutes etc But they never do. So they are cynical hypocrites.

Unfortunately for sevco though, the referees match report, the delegates report, the 4th officials report and the various pieces of filmed evidence of actual thuggery are what will be on the desk of UEFA this week and no amount of obfuscation from sevco and their apologists can spin it away. Roofe will get a ban. Balogun will get a ban. Sevco will be punished for failing to keep their team disciplined and for breaching other protocols.

They will feign outrage, but it won’t change the facts.

As far as I can understand it, VAR only overturns decisions where a “clear and obvious” error takes place.

At 1-0 up and Celtic dominating the game, what Lanarkshire Referees Association official is going to overturn a colleague’s decision and give Celtic a penalty against the Huns?

  12. rumours Gyles Brandredth…………..

…………….he knows what it means to wear that jersey………….

  13. and coming up now on Reporting Scotland, Morelos received abuse on line, and has reported it to the police.

  14. the ONLY way VAR can be trusted to work in Scotland (and globally for that matter) is if the video and images are edited to eliminate distinction between the teams. This would be presented to persons not watching the match to make a decision.

Only then would I trust the process!

  15. Scottish Football Racism Summit …………..

you coudnt make it up , 140 years of anti-catholic bigotry, and the same for anti-irish racism,

or maybe that will be the first point on the agenda.

  16. BBC Scotland highlighting racism again; not a single mention of Scotland’s shame. Contribution from Show Racism The Red Card representative. Isn’t that run by a deid team’s supporter who is in denial about sectarianism?

  17. Question. Did someone not predict last week that there would be a Stock Exchange announcement today about a manager, or am I just an old man who thinks up things?

  18. Lampard would be underwhelming in my opinion.

He might be a known ‘name’ but he isn’t going to put the bums on seats proper managers with track records would.

    Not for me thanks.

  19. spikeysauldman on

credit where credit is due P67

The ball fell to McGinn who dinked in a cross that again met Taylor and his vicious header from 10 yards was required a magnificent save from keeper Scott Bain who pushed it wide.

  20. Morelos abuse – deflect, deflect. After six weeks the ‘Hayburn five’ Covid offenders are up in front of the SFA this week, watch for suspended sentences.

  21. The new found anti racist zeal at ibrox should be applauded. I look forward to their first match at home in a full stadium and the team walking off when their fans start with the fenian blood, ftp, famine is over stuff.

I for one have zero doubt that they will tackle this scourge once and for all.

  22. Nuggets like wee Wullie and Faddy (sp?)………………..

    contemptible……..

Wullie looks like the typical wee nyaff who never got picked for the school team and holds a sneaky grudge.

Easily dominated by strong willed currants like Shug – he’s also keen to be seen as “neutral” so this translates into bias against us and favours for currants……….

Faddy ( sp? ) a meeja pawn in scoddish garb……..has his eye on long-term Shortbread treats.

  23. Lampard would divide the Celtic support even more, not a good appointment and very much about TV

  24. First question from Rongwan Hogwash…….

” Frank you’ve just been unveiled as Manager of troubled, East -End minnows Celtic – so why the wide face? “

  25. Lampard’s Chelsea were great to watch for the neutral but that was mainly due to their chaos at the back and the fact there’d be goals. His team looked disorganized and seemed to rely on moments of magic from attacking players to beat teams less talented.

This is the complete opposite of what we need right now. If Lampard was appointed, it would tell me that the people running the club care more about the brand than what we produce on the pitch.

I’m hoping this is just internet gossip.
