Set-piece, VARless, first save of the season!

248

How frustrating is it that we could control the game against Newco for 90 minutes yet still put our finger on the self-destruction button?   It is equally frustrating that this level of control has been absent against so many lesser opponents.  Why that is, is a question that will asked around these parts for years.

I liked the balance of our play: controlled, with sufficient cover that the defence was never stretched.  Ryan Christie stuck to his role, without trying to win the jackpot every time in possession.

Mohamed Elyounoussi scored with a glorious diving header, should have added a second and was a constant threat when linking with his strike partner, Odsonne Edouard.  Odsonne created the goal and would have doubled the advantage, but for his shot hitting the undercarriage of McGregor in the Newco goal.

When is a trip in the box not a penalty?  We both know the answer to that.  VAR has not removed controversy from the English game so I do not anticipate it will solve our problems here, but surely, surely, the trip on Odsonne would have resulted in a penalty awarded under video review.

VAR would also have seen that Alfredo Morelos was red carded for his attack on Stephen Welsh, we await to see if the SFA video review panel is sufficiently motivated to act.

Season 2020-21 will not be remembered fondly for our goalkeeper performances, however, Scott Bain’s save from a Kent volley yesterday might just count as the first impressive save of the campaign.  I cannot remember another.

I have praised Jonjo Kenny here but it was clear from early on yesterday he did not enjoy the step up in expectation.  Years from now you will be reminded that he conceded a corner that led to the Newco goal while in possession around the halfway line and a familiar pain will emerge.  What on earth?

The stat of this Celtic team: four of Newco’s last five goals against us were from set-pieces; three corners and a free kick into the box.  Martin O’Neill, who added analysis for Sky TV, must have had been dismayed.  His teams were seldom known for their passing game but they all understood how important it was to attack a set-piece.

Newco were no more than ordinary.  They had an exerting European tie on Thursday and could easily have conceded three or four goals, but they left with a point, surprising no one.

And for anyone living in the west of Scotland, this whole over-celebrating a point thing defines them to a T.

Bada Bing…amazing how often they told us that Neil Lennon brought it on himself. That walloper certainly brings the abuse on himself. I just wish they wouldn’t use racist stuff, all else is fair game. Fat, ugly bassa…

  2. Leftclicktic, please accept my condolences on the death of your mother. RIP. I will remember her at Mass tomorrow morning.

  3. I’m looking for some advice –

My ex is applying for a mortgage and she has been asked to provide a lawyer’s letter that the monthly child maintenance I am giving will continue to be so.

Her lawyers have asked for my lawyers details, but I don’t have one.

Any advice on who I should contact? I’m in Hamilton, she’s in Ayr.

    Sad news my friend,

May your blessed Mum rest in peace.

Thoughts and prayers for you and your family.

    God bless.

I don’t understand how a lender would accept such a letter from you as proof of continuing income.

Especially as you don’t have a lawyer who knows you.

In my day for child maintenace to count as income in the calculation of a mortgage amount the arrangement had to be set up by the Child Support Agency. This is part of the Dept of Work and Pensions and any agreement is enforceable by the courts. This was acceptable to lenders.

Not sure if a lawyers letter is enough.

And I don’t think a lender would supply a mortgage on the strength of a “gentleman’s agreement”.

I could be rambling as I’m full of drugs at the moment and hivny slept for three days (nothing serious I hope!)

You could have a word with your local brief. I would imagine they would give their opinion on this free of charge.

But you’d need to pay if you go ahead with the letter.

Hope you are as good as can be!

  8. MAJESTIC HARTSON – I would suggest telling them you don’t have a lawyer. If they insist you need one, then ask them to recommend one and to pay for it. Seems a strange request. There is no guarantee you can make about future payments, all you can do is highlight a history of reliability and an intention to do your best going forward. No idea of your circumstances, but if you lost your income for any reason then payments would likely be at risk.

  13. Scotland is not interested in overcoming racism, I have been at work place training and it is very evident across many professions,it is still seen as a colour issue , white or black brown yellow, this with Kamara is convenient for the media as it shows sevco as leading the way.

Not too disappointed with Scott brown deciding to develop his coaching skills elsewhere as we don’t develop our people ,McManus is now a first team coach what has he done in the game to warrant that, o dea is a youth coach commentator also brought in.

We will miss brown on the park only guy with strength and determination to lead the team,

I think this board believe that if Kennedy wins the Scottish Cup then he will be their choice, not good for him or the club.

Shambles does not describe the football side of Celtic.

  14. My friends in Celtic,

I’m sure we all agree that racism should have no place in a civilised society.

It is wrong, full stop. Equality should be paramount.

Subsequently we cannot pick which racism we deplore and condemn. We must call out all forms of discrimination.

Maybe uncomfortable for some in our midsts.

Do we now assume that anyone whispering into someone’s ear is now automatically deemed racist.

How many times do you see players, managers and coaches hiding their mouth when they speak.

If one of them speaks to James McLean in this manner, is he automatically deemed a racist?

Is Ally Mccoist a racist. ? Hiding his mouth while whispering into an Irish catholics ear ?

Sometimes I wonder. : How the fu@k did we survive growing up in Glasgow area with the discrimination, sectarianism and racism.

Then I remember an old saying ” Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me ”

    HH and sanity to all.

  15. That the huns are now being portrayed as the victims is beyond parody.

Cheats to the core, on and off the park, all day every day.

For me they are middens, every one of them.

If Kamara or Morelos or any of them told me today is Tuesday, I’d check it out.

Is Kamara’s word on this absolute?

  19. Just listening to the BBC podcasts where they’re waxing lyrical about Lee Congerton and his recruitment at Leicester – much-maligned Lee Congerton at Celtic, may I add?

    Funny old game…

  20. WEEBOBBYCOLLINS on 22ND MARCH 2021 8:34 PM

However, to read this makes me feel uncomfortable…

“Our team’s lining up and Scott Brown shoddy act of ‘solidarity’ are beneath contempt, and an insult to genuine anti-racist struggle.”

    ##############

Perhaps if you explain the reason for your discomfort- maybe with some information that is not in the public domain, I think I am open-minded enough to reconsider what I wrote. Otherwise, I don’t take back one word.

Given Sunday’s opportunity for massive media coverage, the Ibrox PR influencer (DUP imported) would surely have been drooling at the prospect of burying the Roofe scandal with the Kamara victim of racism issue. But the Ibrox media team probably couldn’t believe their luck when their Celtic PR counterparts went along with the pre-match two-team line.

What was the matter with taking the knee? Instead, we witnessed a naked attempt to demonstrate to the world-wide audience that the Old Firm could do anti-racism better than anyone else.

Our club captain Scott Brown’s pre-match ‘spontaneous’ exchange with Kamara added to the perfect PR coup. It wasn’t only a triumph for them, but also for us. We used the occasion to divert from our gross mis-management that caused so much of our catastrophic season.

If the fundamental requirement for due process is treated as just another debate-scoring point, having equal weight with all the others, factual or otherwise, then we have all lost.

Yes, Lee Congerton regularly slaughtered, so who really is the chief decision-maker of recruitment, who has the ultimate say, who has been the Celtic FC emperor over say the last decade, the man who gives either thumbs up or thumbs down ?
