SFA hesitate as Newco rally troops over Morelos

157

It has been a week since Alfredo Morelos made a murderous gesture while leaving the field at Celtic Park.  In that time, Newco and their media acolytes have done what they could to mitigate his actions.  The SFA have yet to decide what action is appropriate.

The matter is straightforward: throat-slitting gestures by players towards opposition fans are at the serious end of the scale.  It falls short of Eric Cantona’s kick at an opposing fan 25 years ago, but not by much.  Intimations of serious physical violence towards opposition fans is the type of action that can lead to serious crowd safety issues, as well as violence away from the ground.

Police officers warn players about their behaviour in front of opposition fans prior to games.  If a fan was caught on TV making this gesture at a player, he would have been arrested by now and would be facing a lengthy ban from football.

How this issue is dealt with has sporting ramifications.  Morelos is Newco’s top scorer and prized asset (not against Celtic).  If he is banned for 6 – 10 games it will have an impact on Newco’s title bid, there is no point in any of us pretending otherwise.  This is why commentators, who would otherwise be appalled at murderous gestures in our game, have spent a week downplaying the matter.  They cannot pretend otherwise.

Similarly, Celtic fans calling for a ban that reflects the severity of the issue, do so knowing the sporting consequences.  I believe the SFA’s actions are likely to be decided in the next few days.  Whatever they decide – to impose a 10 game, ban or acquiesce to pressure from Newco and issue a rap on the knuckles – will have sporting consequences.

My hope is that fantasy statements on your website are more likely to gain engagement with your own support than the SFA, who like you and me, know fine well that public comments are designed to gain a sporting advantage, not to encourage the acceptance of the throat-slit gesture in our game.  But this is the SFA, so nothing would surprise.

We all know he should be banned and that the ban should be significant.  He was sent off last month for a gesture to Motherwell fans, which resulted in a single game ban and taught him nothing.  His club are prepared to support his behaviour.  There is no learning, no acceptance of what is an acceptable way to conduct yourself.  These are all reasons why the SFA must act appropriately.

The Road to Milan

In April, a group of cyclists will set off from Celtic Park heading for Milan, where they will arrive 50 years on from our ‘other’ European Cup Final.  The route takes in the Southern Uplands, a ferry to the Netherlands, Rotterdam, Brussels, the Champagne region of France, across the Alps and into Milan.

Our own Mouldy67 has organised the event after the incredible success of The Road to Lisbon in 2017.  If you are a cyclist and could be interested in taking part in this incredible event, see here for more details.

Attempts to make kontact with various mouthpieces for the Parkhead club proved futile as wild rumourz gathered around the empty wastelands of Parkhead.

  2. morelos grabbed christie in an off the ball incident. it was deliberate and it was nasty.

christe grabbed out at morelos and made accidenatal contact with morelos in the genital area.

the morelos act was clearly more violent yet the referee when asked to look at it again saw no wrongdoing.

i agree with the celtic board that it is astonishing that the sfa want to ban christe.

these people at the sfa are brazen and shameless.

a simple solution would be for celtic to leave scottish football. there is a mountain of evidence showing the institutional bias in scottish football in favour of rangers/sevco and against celtic. this has been going on for 100 years.

go to eufa, produce the evidence and let them offer a solution. i think it will be resolved in our favour. these are unique circumstances.

get celtic into another league and let scottish die a quick and painfull death.

‘A simple solution would be for celtic to leave scottish football’……..??

Ahe right ..good luck with that one pal.

If that is the ‘simple’ solution I dread to think what you consider the ‘complicated’ one is.

    Also

Scottish football did not die when the old rangers club dissapeared.

Infact for most of the clubs attendences and interest went up.

Therefore I fail to see that scottish football would ‘die’ in the unicorn scenario of Celtic or indeed Celtic and newco managed to play in another league/country

  4. Watching Liverpool reserves playing Everton in the FA Cup. I am trying to work out which of these youngsters will end up on loan at Ibrox later this month.

  5. If you really think the SFA system will act in a way that seriously undermines or threatens sevco’s title challenge …. then you simply don’t know the system.

Just turned tv on, in time to see last few minutes of the Merseyside Derby. Just in time to see Liverpool Colts lose possession from their own throw in. Ffs, are these kids not coached? Basic stuff. What are they doing on the training ground? 😉

Westcraigs…there are no simple solutions. To be honest, if fans had their way scottish football would be a very different place: no away fans, no media presence, well, maybe tv but certainly no newspapers…no Catholic refs for the huns, no Catholic refs for the Tims (especially Collum)…great food outlets, no tories on the board etc. etc…

Was tuned into Johnnie Walker ‘sounds of the 70s’ on BBC radio 2 then remembered the football was on.Looks like the English FA cup is not high on the red scousers list due to their team selection.

  14. Hi JG – happy to revisit the business model – our board might NEED to do same if their constant appeasement and lack of connection with fan base comes back to bite them !

As mentioned, can’t for one minute imagine that the likes of DD or Denis O’Brien would allow / tolerate such sustained attacks on their wider business interests…..or be “cowed” into some silent submission to accept a place at back of the bus……

I applaud the commercial success that this board and PL have delivered however their professionalism and awareness in this area only makes their on-going inability to “fight back” on our behalf more of a mystery to me……

We’ve came too far – they MUST know and see that they will never be forgiven or forgotten if they don’t put up some kind of meaningful and determined response to the corruption that remains the SFA / Sevco……..

I can’t imagine that many of our fans would be critical or unsupportive IF we stood up and took this cabal on ?

    Hail……Hail……and C’mon The Celt’s…… 👍🍀🥃

Somebody mentioned the metaphor of trying to ride the sevco tiger. I think that’s all too accurate. PL playing cute trying to do ‘just enough’ to stay ahead at home, while maintaining DD’s safe wee business.

Though when’s all said and done, the match was lost and the league reignited, in our 2 man midfield last weekend.

We’re a consistent club on and off the pitch. Consistently handing hope of immortality to the deid yins!

I took a few days off CQN, After the defeat to Sevco. I thought I knew whit it would be like on here, and didn’t want to get even more “Negged oot” than I already was.

Having had a skim over the last week, I can see that it was not that bad… it was much worse. Weren’t Sevco pretty much in the same movie, this time last year? What happened? They couldnae handle the pressure, that’s what.

Did they not knock us out of the Cup on penalties at the semi-Final stage a few years ago? Just had to turn up for the final to pick up the Cup. What happened? They couldnae handle the pressure, that’s what

It took them three years to win the Petrofanny Cup.

Catching someone in the league is one thing. Displacing them in first place is another, and then staying their until May is another thing.

Most of our players have had that pressure for years. We can handle it. They handle it so well, we have won ten trophies in a row. Keep the faith.

Oh, and btw, they huvny even caught us yet. Keep yer knickers dry fellow Celts

We are facing the best team out of Ibrox for eight years. If we accept that, respond to that, we are still in the box-seat. However expecting then to ‘bottle it’, with a better run of fixtures, is expecting too much, I think.

  18. Just imagine Celtic’s reserves knocking Sevco out of the Scottish Cup by absolutely dominating them and scoring a wonder goal, and making it the 23 year in succession without them (or their predecessors the Huns) winning at Celtic Park.

That’s called keeping a boot on the throat of your rivals. Pity we don’t have the same philosophy.

  19. Hunderbirds are Gone on

    McNut.

I agree that with our current financial situation, it would be prudent to try and strengthen the team (of course buying players is no guarantee of improvement).

I still maintain that Sevco are entirely untested in closing out a league, we aren’t, and that is a big advantage.

  22. HUNDERBIRDS ARE GONE @18:01

Quite correct, and if we are neck & neck at the split, I would say we might be favourites.

Obviously we need back-up for Eddy as a minimum requirement – we also need the strategy and tactics to beat them when the need arises.

But yes, their ‘bottle’ will be tested…..so will ours.

  23. jinkyredstar ‘Frimpong Merrily on High’ on

The heaviest sanction will fall on Ryan – watch this space

Oh and our Board will suck it up.

  24. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

Of course the board will suck it up, it was their plan to maintain the old firm and the old firms attraction of the media to the hatred and controversy, it’s a win win for them, they rake it in and to hell with the consequences, violence and murder are big box office. More than a club

IMHO, we should go in and try and get Pedro Chirivella on loan for defensive midfield to cover Broony. I know you feel there is a Liverpool – hun axis but worth a try. The lad can also deliver dead balls into good areas.

  26. POG

That is a year now he has been with Celtic ( alibet he was loaned back for circa 5 months )

Seems a strange one to me especially with the Bayo and Griff

  29. Could Celtic as a club,

ban both Morelos and Kent from our ground for their threats towards our fans ?

We can ban our fans for offensive and threatening behaviour in the ground, so

Why not These 2 players for potentially inciting a riot

    Surely therefor,

Celtic could ban them from our Ground for their behaviour ????
