SFA Judicial Panel opens on Res 12 issue

299

The SFA Judicial Panel Disciplinary Tribunal sit for the first time today to examine Rangers Uefa licence application in 2011, the subject of which was picked up by the ‘Res 12’ group of Celtic shareholders.  This application was made under Craig Whyte’s memorable tenure which saw the club withhold tax payments before the eventual appointment of liquidators.

Evidence of what took place was eventually heard in open court, at Whyte’s trial in Glasgow last year.  Rangers did not declare to the SFA they failed to make tax payments and should not have been granted a Uefa licence.  As a consequence, Celtic, who finished second in the league that year, were denied a chance to participate  in the Champions League qualifiers.

So far, so clear, but then the matter becomes subject to issues not heard in court, specifically the Five Way Agreement between the SFA, the (now defunct) Scottish Football League, the Scottish Premier League (now the Scottish Professional Football League), oldco Rangers (now also defunct) and Sevco Scotland (now newco Rangers).

This Agreement gave Sevco Scotland associate membership of the SFA and a place in the Scottish Football League in return for accepting some, though not all, of Rangers football penalties.  Newco When the SFA announced this Tribunal, Newco did not contest the guilt of Oldco, instead suggesting they had agreement of immunity on this matter.  The SFA clearly believe differently.

The Judicial Panel will first decide on its competency to hear the matter, based on whatever partial immunity Charles Green secured for Newco in 2012.  If the terms of the immunity is not sufficient to exempt the worst excesses of Craig Whyte, the panel’s punishment of Oldco will apply to Newco.

The extent of this one is significant, effectively cheating to gain entry to the Champions League.  I expect nothing less than a multi-year ban from European competition.

You will notice people switch seats of the Newco/Oldco debate with this subject.

Craig Whyte appointed administrators who would release the name ‘Rangers’ and associated intellectual property to Newco, unlike administrators at Airdrieonians in 2002, who refused the then Clydebank to rename themselves Airdrieonians.  The name was subsequently changed to Airdrieonians in 2013.

Whyte’s plan was to buy the brand name from Rangers administrators and put the Scottish football authorities on the spot.  In buying the assets from the administrators, Green had control of the name by the time of the Five Way Agreement, and he accepted some liabilities as a price for entry on the nod into Scottish football.

This resulted in a debate that will never end.  Newco claim continuity with Oldco when selling tickets, but not so much at times like this.  No ‘Say No to liquidation’ banners were noted in the asset register.

Green claimed Sevco Scotland “bought the history” from administrators Duff and Phelps (you will not be surprised to learn ‘the history’ was not on the asset list purchased).  Now lawyers for Green’s one-time rival for Oldco’s assets will try to fortify his work.

We’ll see if Dave King’s recent sabre-rattling has been effective.

Nigeria got a pen today. Saudi got 2 yesterday, as did Iran. Egypt got one against the hosts, Russia. Tunisia got one against England. More were awarded to them than against, I think.

The Saudis, Iran, Nigeria, and Senegal have all won matches. Tunisia will probably join them after playing Panama. Only Egypt and Morocco were winless and Morocco were “allowed” to get a draw with Spain.

I have to conclude that the “cheating”, against them was very subtle (Iran’s goal was correctly disallowed, for example)

Don’t apologise for knowing about the heart and soul of Glasgow’s personna!! :)

As you come off the M&4 at Junction 1a, you could turn up Polmadie Road and head for hampden, or as the intelligentsia do, turn down the way towards either the Gorbals or if you are a bit drunk, Shawfield…..(and if you are a bit too drunk you might even miss Shawfield and end up in Rutherglen!)

Anyway, there facing you will be the old church and just to its left the metal sculpture pictured.

Nowadays the wet-behind-the-ears refer to the area as ‘Richmond Gate’ all lah de dah like, but it’s still the Oatlands; just new curtains but the same folk.

I was not saying don’t sign him- merely be cautious.

We have had success in this risk before with John Hartson (and in our “biscuit tin” “balance sheet” decision not to sign Coetzee) but we have been badly burned by Bakayoko, Boerigter and Shaun Maloney (2nd time around). I would want us to be dead sure he has healed. If so, get him signed.

Interesting view on the NBA coach fae Toronto. It is very far from my are (Greenlion is yir man for the Basketball).

However, you pose a close-to-home issue when you ask who goes if the players don’t suit the coach’s system In pro Sport it is almost always the coach who pays that price; in amateur sport, the coach gets a chance to shape and develop.

Your Toronto example poses the question, why did the owner hire a coach with those known tendencies if he did not want the team to be shaped by them. Barca would never appoint Tony Pulis or Big Sam but there are teams where they are a good fit.

We face the dilemma at Celtic where many of our players struggle to live up to Brendan Rodger’s demands for being brave on the ball, passing out from the back, and to re-cycle possession. We have seen coaches like John Hughes adn Kenny Shiels try to introduce this approach with lesser Scottish clubs and they were eventually sacked for their ambition. Ronny Deila’s system is barely distinguishable from Brendan’s but Ronny fell to the influence of player power. Brendan is still getting the “honeymoon period” treatment from the players because of our great domestic success.

But what would it look like after 2 more seasons of failing to improve in Europe? Will the players succumb to the KevJ “safe position” of “we want to park the bus and punt the ball cos we’re fed up with failing to control the ball and get past the drubbing stage of being cannon fodder”?

Will we favour keeping the system simple enough for the less adequate players to cope with or do we allow Brendan recruiting time to get his own players in who can feel more comfortable with these demands?

If there was a Scottish version of TEDtalks called NEDtalks, I’d have to put LeBron at the top of the bill. There are many many other candidates who talk crappola for a long time but he is the winner for me.

I can only guess, but I guess Masai Ujiri’s thinking was something like … the team had already drafted the offensively gifted, but defensively challenged star, Demar DeRosan …

presumably, they thought that, with the right coaching, he would improve his defence over time/as he aged/got bigger, without losing too much offensive punch …

I can see their thinking …

then, they brought in a couple of expensive defensive minded players (Carroll and Ubaka) , who both crapped out … maybe had one of them worked out, DeRosan’s defensive deficiencies might have been easier to overlook …

and DeRosan seeems like a nice kid, and not a ‘coach killer’… but, for some reason, he just never bought into the defensive system the coach wanted …

eventually, one of them had to go … and it usually isn’t6 the guy who is getting paid $32 million a year

As I was strolling in the haze today I took a wee pic of Celtic Park from that bit of levelled land at the new footbridge crossing from Shawfield over to Dalmarnock.

The picture itself is nothing but I have always wanted to take one from there when the ground was full, the lights gleaming and the ripples of atmosphere buffeting the stars above as they warm the orchestra and choir up for the ninety minutes extravaganza ahead.

Unfortunately, well actually fortunately, I am usually at the game so the photo opportunity passes on the breeze.

But one day, I will put on my trainers and get that picture and then dash like Eros over the water and up the game…probably to collapse in the arms of a waiting St Andrews paramedic….a blonde twenty five year old called Evangelina would make for the almost perfect evening and atmospheric exit, coinciding as it would with Leigh Griffiths scoring a third as Real Madrid tasted the sword of history and justice.

Anyway….the thing about the picture was that it brought back the long discussed ambition to ‘complete’ the main stand, adding to the potential attendance while meeting the modern day concept of a stadium.

I can’t disagree with much of that, but looking across the Clyde there was something about that architecture that said ….’here we are, you can see us, you are welcome, come in and join us.”.

Of course today the stadium was empty, the ghosts silent and the day just another like any other in the close season as the clock steadily ticked in time with my count to the first game.

But imagine that same vista on the night of that match when we lay waste to the Madrid marvels.

BSR captured the potential in his Glasgow Sunset photo from EK earlier, but put that in the melting pot with floodlights, traffic, songs, stars and a moon so large that the gods themselves could watch without straining their eyes.

Daft I know, but that’s what happens when a photo or two become a couple of lit fuses…..The imagination explodes.

    Hail hail
