SFA keen to change others while retaining their architect of destruction

1003

SFA chief executive, Stewart Regan, clearly sees opportunity among the carnage that is Scottish football at the moment as he leaked plans to ambush clubs into a radical overhaul of the league structures to the media yesterday.

Henry McLeish made several recommendations in his paper on the future of our game, one of which was for a smaller professional setup of two leagues (SPL 1 and SPL 2), sitting on top of a grass-roots pyramid of community based clubs, as well as a 10-team top division.  I agreed with both recommendations but relegation-dodgers in the SPL refused to countenance such a deal.

While it seems a 10-club top division is as far away as ever, the SFA are keen to push through a SPL 2 proposal before the start of the new season, something which borders on ultra-ambitious.

An unattributed SFA source (surely Regan himself) briefed BBC’s Jim Spence on their plans but the language was curious:

“Someone has to take a lead and sort out the internal bickering and point scoring and also to ensure that the Rangers situation never happens again.

“We need to use the mood for change among supporters in the country to tackle the current inertia and do what is right for the game.

“Change has to be democratic, but the time for talking has passed. We need action now to save the game.

“The fans are demanding fundamental change. The Rangers situation has intensified the need for a resolution and, over the next few weeks, we will meet with the SPL and SFL to find a solution.”

In order to “ensure the Rangers situation never happens again”, why don’t the SFA start by ensuring former directors of Rangers, who participated in the controversial EBT scheme which precipitated the crisis, are removed from the SFA board?

The SFA president received loans from Rangers EBT which he did not repay despite the club going bust last week.  There is a belief that those loans were never meant to be repaid and that many of Rangers EBT loans were accompanied by written confirmation that they were never to be repaid, making these ‘loans’ an illegal tax scam.

The SFA chief executive claimed to have investigated and cleared the president of any wrong-doing.  No one else is aware of this investigation.  There is a suspicion that all he did was listen to the president’s version of events, compounding an already dreadful situation for the SFA.

We would love to hear how Mr Ogilvie explained why he didn’t repay his loan.

Two weeks ago we spoke about the SFAs inadequate corporate governance on these matters.  If only corporate governance was the extent of the problem, they appear quite shameless.

“Someone has to take the lead…. tackle the current inertia and do what is right for the game”.

Sack the clown before you start to preach to the rest of the game.

As you know I never once wobbled on the fact that they would be liquidated, based on informed sound bites from a knowledgeable friend.

I cannot be so confident that club 1872-2012 will truly get what is coming to them. However, I am optimistic that they will get their just deserts. As I say, it may not need to go a vote, if they do not get their license.

    timbhoy,

you are entitled to renew season ticket thats your right, but its just as valid for another supporter to with hold buying one until we see the outcome because

some supporter’s will not be part of a farce of a league that contains new company

because that would indeed be a tainted title no matter who won it.

    ———————————————-

I have absolutely no problem with anyone who makes the decision not to renew their season ticket, as you said, we all have the right to make our own decision.

However, to suggest that if Celtic win the title next season that it would be in any way ‘tainted’ because a newco is playing in the SPL makes no sense whatsoever.

  7. You could argue that if the new club are in the SPL next season then the league is tainted, invalid etc. If new club are in then it means that sports doesn’t matter anymore.

Celtic have done nothing wrong. We have nothing whatsoever to reproach ourselves for.

It’s the Belfast Celtic argument. Do we play in the only league we can play in next season (for there has been too much uncertainty and too little time to find an alternative) while, I would hope, seeking something more suited to our idea of what constitutes honest sport, or do we give those who hate us the satisfaction of seeing us give up football?

If we had set up something else for next season and the SFA and SPL went on to do things the right way and govern Scottish football properly, it would be unfair for us to walk away. Our actions would have been too radical and too knee-jerk.

There is plenty we can still do while wiping the floor with whatever Scottish football throws at us next season. Who could argue with the club if Celtic decided to fly the SPL flag at half mast for the season, a silent protest against the shambles that the SFA and the SPL have allowed Scottish football to become in their vain (I pray) attempts to save Rangers or at least save the Rangers pound?

We can blame the huns for a lot, but isn’t this taking things a little too far?

  14. Just watching, escape to victoryjust now.its at the part where they are playing the big match before the try and escape. The match itself is an exact copy of scottish football, and especially that fixture we no longer need to endure. The glasgow derby….I feel really happy just reminding myself of this fact!

  15. I’d rather all clubs who vote against new club refusing to play in the league next season.

If we win the league next season and new club come second (signing players from the minis and Hubs etc), then I won’t see that as something to be happy about.

I was talking to a mini last week about the huns, he wants them kicked out of the league. Imagine their board voted them in, then in the summer they sign a few minis and beat Hearts at Tyncastle opening game of the season, how would those fans feel?

Celtic FC are indeed in the process of signing Rodallega, but the processing of said signing by the SFA is likely to be delayed due to irregularities in the supply of ladbrokes pens to my office. I’ll do my best to get it processed by May 2014.

  22. hamiltontim,

its just my opinion that if a team is in the league via corrupt dealings

then the whole league is morally bankrupt and as such to me its tainted

and in the case of new company/club 12 being especially so considering

the extent of their crimes, but like i say its just my opinion.

  28. thomthethim CQN (genuine) Badge Wearer on

It strikes me that this sudden desire to restructure Scottish football is being driven by the intelligence gathered that the The are not going to get the required votes.

If they were sure of the votes, then there would be no need for further gerrymandering.

What I don’t understand is, why is there talk of them entering SPL2, in the event of failing to get the 8 votes?

Should they not actually need to APPLY to join the SFL at entry level.

It really is a mess, created by fear and Establishment forces.

The lid has been lifted on Scotland’s society and it has not revealed a pretty picture.

The institutions of the country, political, financial, football and media have been exposed as being corrupt and not fit for purpose.

…and I thought things were bad over here!!:>)

  29. They don’t taint us now, but what about next season? You don’t think next season league is tainted, not the winners but the league? What about if the New Club win the league?

  30. hamiltontim,

first of all i am not having a go at any one who renew’s because its up to them,

its just that i think if the league is set up with this new company and all the teams

participate then by that very fact you are complicit to the said act, again just my
