SFL delivers as SPL Ltd facing insolvency

1374

The Scottish Football League today placed an upper limit on which division Sevco can play in next season – their Third.  We must now wait on the company providing sufficient information to complete their application to the SFL and for membership of the Scottish FA.  Although many Rangers fans want Sevco to join the Third Division, chief exec Charles Green was clearly hoping to start life higher up the food chain.

The overwhelming nature of this verdict indicates the solidarity between clubs and fans, throughout the divisions, on how our sport is governed.  This is a good thing but it leaves one burning question on the table:

Is the Scottish Premier League insolvent?

Last week SPL chief exec Neil Doncaster told SFL clubs that the Premier League would be unable to meet its contractual obligations if they did not vote Sevco into the First Division.  Unless this was a shameless lie designed to bully clubs into giving Doncaster what he wanted, the Scottish Premier League Ltd should seek to appoint an administrator without delay.

You can ignore comments about league reconstruction at some unspecified point in the future, Doncaster told us last year that “those who want 16 teams in the top flight are deluding themselves.”

The Scottish Football League does not need the SPL, or its money, to continue to thrive as a community-based sporting entity.  They will flourish.  What happens to the SPL remains to be seen.

As we have observed once or twice before, M. Platini, where are you?  We need the football world to assist with the survival of the game in one of its historic heartlands.

Sorry, Jude, but a triumphalist parade waving Tricolours would have almost the same effect on me as one waving Union Flags.

I would hope that we would leave this sort of strutting to those lost souls who see it as part of their ‘ Kulchur’.

  3. In which I meander round the Rules of the Scottish Cup and look at some questions.

Why is Rangers FC ineligible for the Cup? Despite that the SFA have them included – pre-judging issues or an oversight?

Does the competition start when the draw is made or when the first match is played? This matters.

What round would an SFL3 Rangers enter the Cup in? It is not clear.

Can the Appellate Tribunal eject Rangers from this year’s Cup before the Preliminary Round takes place, or must it wait till after 4th August to have that option available?

The best comment I heard yesterday was on Radio Scotland news. A hun called had texted them to say that Scotland “didn’t deserve the most successful football club in the world and an application should be made to join La Liga as soon as possible”.

Will be at the Stuttgart game tomorrow with GB Jnr and a few other Germany based bhoys, so we’ll try and get a word or two from Lenny & Co. Stuttgarter Kickers have already sold more than 4000 tickets for their smallish stadium, so should be a good gig.

That way they can do their wee boycott and the other clubs can get on quite happily without them.

I don’t think Sevco will be there for that length of time – some form of re-organisation will happen if Regan etc. are still at the helm

I wasn’t surprised at the SFL vote. The clubs in the 2nd and 3rd divisions will make money from the huns as they go through the leagues (assuming they do). They would have lost out by allowing the huns straight into division 1.

The unanimity of the SPL vote was more surprising. It seems to me to have been prompted by the action of the fans rather than any notion of sporting integrity by the chairmen. There’s also a suspicion that the SPL only voted the way they did because they assumed the huns would start off again in division 1.

    I don’t think it’s over yet though.

The league is over. The language coming from CP is already defensive. They know that the gamble on a rookie has cost them another title to the bankrupt side in Govan. When will people wake up. being a Celtic fan is not about being faithful through and through, when the cost is the consistent failure to win titles. Some of the people on here are two faced apologists for Neil Lennon. I have said time and time again, it was these very same people who wanted the head of a title winning manager in Gordon Strachan. I listened to the moans about rubbish football…..well what the heck do we have now? I would rather have rubbish that wins than rubbish that fails. But you see, those same people back Neil for the scurrilous reasons why they wouldn’t back Gordon.

I have followed Celtic all my life and I call a spade a spade. Neil Lennon and peter Lawwell are sinking the club. We are third in the league. We scraped a draw yesterday.

  26. Ernie:

I don’t think it’s over yet either and I agree it was brought to a head and a decision by the wrath of the fans rather than the ethics of the chairmen but I was chuffed to see the Scottish people rise for fairness. Fairness in sport at least.

  27. Having a quick look at the qualification process for the group stages of the Champions league

Am I correct in interpreting that should Celtic qualify from the 3rd qualifying round they would face a play off round before being able to advance to the group stages proper

  28. Surely there isn’t any possible way the SPL teams could vote ‘again’ to allow Sevcohun FC into the SPL –is there? That would be tantamount to declaring war on their respective supporters. I think it would be the end of many teams. Celtic fans would Bhoycott the grounds of those clubs who acquiesced and I suspect also those who decided abstained as an abstention could be deemed as giving tacit approval. I can only guess that the majority of the fans of those teams who vote for a Newco would refuse to ever go back and those who have purchased season tickets resort to some form legal process to sue the club for fraud. Hopefully this will just be another insane idea from raygun.

How do we as fans go about ousting this joke of a chairman?

  29. all this rangers stuff is doing my nut in, how can the spl clubs vote newco into spl, its suicide for any chairman and the league as a whole, even an spl 2 is suicide, why keep flogging a dead horse, would it not be wiser to get around the table with commercial entities such as sky and espn to ensure that they are held to their contract with slp, fan power is amazing at getting these organisations to take positive action. what comes of newco will come, the league must go on and plans for a restructuring of the games must press ahead over the coming months to see an upturn in scottish football.

scottish footballs biggest mistake was not listening to fans hence the low crowds, lack of interest and competition, it does not make sense to blank your customers and hopefully scottish football knows that now and will respond accordingly. what i find amazing is that the leading lights of scottish football have over the last 2 decades looked at revenue in isolation with t.v taking over the game while gates have fallen year on year. t.v has its place as does the money that comes from it, but its not the be all and end all.

scottish football could change the landscape forever and i for one would be behind radical change to our game. someone said on here that whatever bart of our club needed rangers he would happily remove, i am in his camp, if we loss 5 million pounds as a result of these changes then bring it on.

its worth remembering that celtics most succeful team were scottish born and bread, the quality street kids all scottish as well, we have a group of young men coming through our youth system right now that have real quality and we need to nurture that into the first team give more their chance to make it at celtic, we have been guilty of brought in to many avarage players at the expense of tens of millions over the years and closing the door to the first team. we can still bring in quality players, but no more squad fillers please, no rash transfer market buys

every other club who claim they need the money or face administration need to understand that you live within your means, stop buying poor players and get more of your young players into the first team squads.

I agree , would like them to come back with lesson learned , without all their baggage, no WATP and lose their “we are entitled” mentality . Scotland needs as many big teams with support like any other country . But you know it aint gonna happen because in their warped minds its Timmys fault , the media, the sfa everybody elses fault. They will never put their hands up and admit that what caused it was Their own mentality and Murrays ego and a compliant media, I think they will come back worse , with a huge chip on their shoulder and all the horrid songs etc :@(
