SFL, Hearts and the cash cow

790

With former Rangers International director, Charles Green, no longer on the scene, Scottish Football League chief executive, David Longmuir, has had a sudden change of heart. After encouraging member clubs to reject the SPL proposal to merge leagues, yesterday he congratulated clubs who voted for the merger as “reluctant heroes”.

SFL president, Jim Ballantyne, was less pragmatic, “We are joining their [SPL] company, their organisation.  They have swallowed us up. We could use nice words about it, but it is a takeover.”

On this occasion, we concur with Mr Ballantyne, who went on to say, “It will be for others to decide if this step takes us to where we want to go.”

The truth is that while this arrangement will do lots for clubs in the second tier of the game it will fundamentally change nothing, our challenges remain.

News this morning of impending financial doom at Hearts as a result of their lender and major shareholder going into liquidation presents another challenge.  Hearts over-reached what looked like a bizarre attempt to spend money like there was no tomorrow.  Memories of Zadoc the Priest blasting over the PA system at Tynecastle heralding their access to the Champions League qualifiers in 2006 will seem hollow now.

Scottish football has one perfectly solvent cash cow and nearly 40 businesses teetering on the brink.  Send the cash cow off to graze in pastures where it can be fattened in return for writing a cheque big enough to solve the game’s problems.

Willie Wallace will be at the Celtic Store, Argyle St, for late night shopping, from 5.30-7.30 pm tonight (Thursday).  Where you can buy a signed copy of his book and have a chat with the man himself.  Bring a camera.

Immediately after leaving the Celtic Store Willie and Brogan Rogan (and a pile of books) are heading to the Greenock Celtic Supporters’ Club for a CQN Question and Answer evening.  Entry costs £2 (all of which is going to our charity causes).  DON’T FORGET YOUR CAMERA!!

Raffle tickets for this fabulous signed Celtic strip cost only £1, you’ve two days left to get a ticket, so fill your boots here.

Tomorrow, while some of us are relaxing in Fife, over a hundred Celtic fans will drive north ahead of a 1254125 Ben Nevis climb and Huddle. Two of our own are then cycling from Fort William back to Glasgow on Sunday…. They need sponsors for their 1254125 campaign. Even if you can’t make it up Ben Nevis you can help out here.

And, if your stuck in Lanarkshire tomorrow there’s a trivia quiz in aid of the Walk Centre, Nakuru, Kenyan, who help children and families of the slum. Quiz takes place at St John The Baptist Church Hall, Uddingston, 7.30 – 11.30.

  1. What’s the story with Balde? Has he signed or not. I would have thought he would be wheeled out on the club website today or tomorrow at the latest if he has signed.

Also the club making a big thing about our No 7’s on the pre launch blurb for the new home top, anybody got any ideas why?

    b2k,

Fair enough. I agree that the Club themselves aren’t institutionally bigoted but their associated support disgusts me.

I, like LiviBhoy, know a few decent Hearts supporters (even though I’m from the West) but go to Tynecastle as a visiting Celtic supporter and you soon find out what the vast majority feel about us.

They are truly a horrible lot. In my experience, like many others I’m sure, going to Tynecastle was as bad, if not worse, than going to the Bigotdome.

    UF

  5. b2k – IMO, as a collective they are every bit as bad as their cousins!

I am sure there are a few decent individuals that follow them however, I remember Hampden April 2005 and how the minutes silence in honour of Pope John Paul II had to be cut short! Just one horrible example there are many many more!

I for one won’t miss them!

  6. UF I think it was worse at Tynecastle because you get closer to them. I have stronf memeories of a twisted face elderly man leaning over the stand shouting racist bile at me and my sons. I stopped going to Tynecastle but come to that I stopped going to Easter Rd as well. Neither set of fans showed much love for us.

Don’t get me wrong I don’t like the jambos but what I’m saying is that there is a big difference between them and the evil that was Rangers. That team should have been closed down for legal reasons many years ago. IMO the other teams in the league are basically just playing football and as long as we do it better I’m cool with them.

  7. It has been fascinating reading/listening to the leaked Charlotte material. I’ve been drifting off the last few nights to the dulcet tones of Craig Whyte. Feel like I know the guy now!

Pretty clear that he is not McCoist’s biggest fan. I know we suspected it at the time but their failure to qualify for the Champion’s League (and ultimately Europa) really put a spanner in the CW master plan.

He knew there was a £10 million a year gap in the accounts but with the CL money he could have put them into administration on his terms.( his only regret was not doing it as soon as he got in)

So he’s left withholding NI & PAYE to keep the club running and as he says himself, what else was he supposed to do?

His arrival was heralded as the Great Whyte hope yet he ended up being the fall guy for a decade’s worth of gross mismanagement. Funny how quickly people’s views change if they are stupid enough to believe the media.

If there’s one thing to be learned it’s how much we are in the dark with what is going on.

No point worrying about rumours and who’s got a mate that knows someone who used to make the tea at HMRC.

Craigy bhoy and Duff and Phelps had no idea what was going to happen and they were making the decisions! What hope have we got?

Ive had bricks stones & bottles thrown at me visiting mini huns ground just like the bigotdome.

    No loss and good riddance.

  10. Uncle Fester,

I remember 2 occasions at Tynecastle in the 60s when I had 2 totally different experiences. In the first, I was in their old equivalent of the Jungle and we started singing “We all live in a green submarine” and they joined in, changing the green into maroon, I think. Good atmosphere. The other occasion, I was crushed behind the goals at one end of the ground. That was bad enough but worse was the bile that they roared throughout the game. Bad bad atmosphere. Don’t know what changed things.

  11. Oh, for those who think Minty and Sounness are to blame for the wrongs of Scottish football, I cannot agree. Personally, I trace things back to the year we won the league at Love Street. Hearts got where they were by sheer running power and clugging. Most clubs then copied that, to compensate for the lack of skill. Then, there was no emphasis for far far too long on skill and technique.

    Parkheadcumsalford,

Strange to have two completely different experiences in such a short period of time. I don’t know what changed things either but what I do know is that any time I’ve been to Tynecastle it hasn’t been pleasant.

I remember a guy in his late teens / early twenties standing right at the corner of the stand to the left of the visiting supporters end and he had Union Flag with UVF emblazoned across it.

He was giving it all the usual hand gestures and stuff then proceeded to take of the Hearts home kit he was wearing to reveal a Sevco strip!!! I couldn’t believe my eyes.

Wouldn’t miss them in the slightest.
