With former Rangers International director, Charles Green, no longer on the scene, Scottish Football League chief executive, David Longmuir, has had a sudden change of heart. After encouraging member clubs to reject the SPL proposal to merge leagues, yesterday he congratulated clubs who voted for the merger as “reluctant heroes”.
SFL president, Jim Ballantyne, was less pragmatic, “We are joining their [SPL] company, their organisation. They have swallowed us up. We could use nice words about it, but it is a takeover.”
On this occasion, we concur with Mr Ballantyne, who went on to say, “It will be for others to decide if this step takes us to where we want to go.”
The truth is that while this arrangement will do lots for clubs in the second tier of the game it will fundamentally change nothing, our challenges remain.
News this morning of impending financial doom at Hearts as a result of their lender and major shareholder going into liquidation presents another challenge. Hearts over-reached what looked like a bizarre attempt to spend money like there was no tomorrow. Memories of Zadoc the Priest blasting over the PA system at Tynecastle heralding their access to the Champions League qualifiers in 2006 will seem hollow now.
Scottish football has one perfectly solvent cash cow and nearly 40 businesses teetering on the brink. Send the cash cow off to graze in pastures where it can be fattened in return for writing a cheque big enough to solve the game’s problems.

The day that them and the Wee Thems met in the Scottish Cup Final at Celtic Park, I was at a Pipe Band competition in that home of tolerance and understanding, Ballyclare in Co. Antrim.
My son and I went into the nearest pub to the Field, him wearing his green band jacket.
We planked ourselves doenin front of the telly to watch the game.
The archetypal skin headed, tatoo bearing patrons were present.
However one of them was bedecked in Hearts’ colours.
We called him Billy the Jambo to differentiate.
When they scored early, B t J went berserk, running around the place like a madman.
This gave us the opportunity to show a degree of pleasure, ostensibly at the antics of our nrw hero.
At half time, one of the bouncers came over and asked us how the game was going.
” Pretty even. Hearts got a good start, but Rangers have played their way back into the game and it’s now wide open”, I replied diplomatically.
At full time, we left the bar, shaking our heads in disappointment, until we got beyond earshot.
Aye, Billy the Jambo had a good day out and he let his cousins know all aboit it.

Meanwhile Willie Wallace is currently at the Celtic store in Argyle Street with BRT&H. Pop in if you are in Glasgow shopping or on your way home from work. He’ll be there until 7.30pm then its down to the Greenock CSC for the CQN event.

I was also there that day mo chara and and no time did I hear them ask if we were “alright”!! I did hear them tell us that we were going to Edinburgh (as if we didn’t know already) also made us aware of our eta back at George sq and that they “would be waiting for us” maybe in case we didnt know our way home and they could inform us where we should be goin – absolutely an (poor) attempt to intimidate us as was the ott visible presence of groups of them when we got there !! Glad to say it didn’t work !! I’m Jus wondering if those moments that i mention re George sq were put to the polis by ms mcmahon ,whom I totally agree with u Btw as having been tirelessly working away for us,a great lady!
Now re the soon to be demise of that den of hate,no…the. Edinburgh wan!! How any Celtic fan can hope for their stinkin survival,is in my eyes,the same as hoping for the survival of sevco !!
