SFL is over but still busy times

921

The Scottish Football League programme is now finished with only play-offs still to complete but there is still a great deal of business to complete.  The remarkable persistence of First Division clubs to find a financial model which will allow them to retain full time football shows no sign of ending, despite the difficulties presented from a couple of quarters.

Meanwhile the Third Division champions have even more pressing matters.  They have now finished their league programme and can now officially be told what they have perhaps unofficially suspected for some weeks.  Charles Green has agreed to remain a director until the end of this month.  Before he goes the ownership of Ibrox, as well as the appropriateness of the club’s IPO in December, will need to be established.  They have a three week window but nothing happens until the lawyers report, which I expect this week.

It was two years ago today Sir David Murray took a £1 payment and relieved himself of outstanding commitments to Lloyds Banking Group, the legacy of his time at Rangers.  The support Craig Whyte received at critical times in the months which followed was breath-taking.  Every hack, side-kick, and numpty ‘fan’ who told the rest to set aside all common sense deserve a medal for what they did to that club.

They don’t even understand the mock-worship Celtic fans offer Whyte is a parody on where they were 2011-12.

    Full time in Lisbon

    Inter 1 Celtic 2

    Now THERE’S a Legends match!

  2. If CQN had been around in ’67 ….

Well, I know we beat Inter but let’s face it we were a bit lucky. I mean we had dozens of chances but only scored the two. Those strikers were hiding for much of the match. And what did Johnstone contribute? Stein should have hooked him at half time.

What formation were we playing anyway? Those full backs may be good going forward but they left big holes at the back bombing on all of the time.

It’s not been a bad season I suppose, but we need investment in this team. A few new players must be bought in the summer or we will deteriorate.

  3. in honour of Celtic and the Lisbon Lions.. scotlands greatest ever triumph in football the huns/sevco should be made to expire on the 25th of May..now that would be something for tattooist to be kept busy..h.h

Not good enough. The amount of chances Celtic missed there – we should be doing better than that. The forwards are obviously not interested.

If Stein wants to go I don’t think we should stand in his way. We lost twice to Dundee United this season.

We should get Donald Ford from Hearts.

    Good Afternoon.

As some of you may be aware, I have been working on a wee CQN project concerning a forthcoming book on one Willie Wallace esq.

The Wallace story is one that is unique to the Lions.

He was the Lion who was bought in during the 66/67 season signing on 6th December 1966.

But why did Jock Stein sign him at that point? Willie had been around Scottish football since the late 50’s so why go and get him then?

Why did Stein describe him as a whole forward line and who was meant to make way for him in the team?

There are many surprising facts about Willie Wallace, many of which will surprise Celtic fans of many years. Why did he gain so few caps? Why was he suddenly ushered out of Celtic Park– possibly against Jock Stein’s wishes.

However, the book also features Willie’s times at Stenhousemuir, playing with Jim Baxter, Denis Mochan and Alfie Conn senior at Raith Rovers, and then 5 years at Hearts– and the famous occasion when he ran a Celtic defence ragged!

Oh and then there is Willie’s humour– Bobby Lennox described him as great company off the field– always cracking jokes and pulling pranks.

I spoke to Willie on the phone just last week from his home in Australia. He had just been down to the surf club for a coffee. Whilst he was there he got chatting to a woman he had never met before– and it turned out to be Kenny Dalglish’s cousin who just happened to be there on a visit!!!

In a previous interview, Willie Wallace said that things “just happen” to him– like playing for Celtic and at Wembley for Scotland. That is both true and untrue– he worked hard at his game and got the rewards that he deserved– but there is no doubt that things do just happen to Willie Wallace– and they still are to this day.

Many of you know that he will be here for the CQN golf day and you can get a chance to hear the man speak for himself.

In the interim, I recommend the book– not because I wrote part of it– sure that is just the usual drivel from me—- but there is a great story here, a hidden story, about the boy who became the quiet Lion– the one who doesn’t roar about himself so to speak, but whose story is in many ways really quite remarkable– especially in relation to the 6 or 7 weeks between the start of April and 25th May 1967– when amongst other things– Willie Wallace won the European Cup whilst playing………. on a TEMPORARY contract!!!!!
