Shadow of Prodan, Jullien a different type of project

307

From what I see in photographs, Christopher Jullien, who completed his transfer to Celtic this morning, is 8’6”, chiselled, and already filling the Celtic Park tunnel.  We needed at least one central defender, so I am delighted he is in so early in the transfer window.

Second observation (after his stature): he is not a ‘project’, or at least, he’s an older and more expensive project than we normally buy.  We will continue to sign players for less than €8m, but there is also value in this space.  If this is the new norm, it is where we should be aiming.

Christopher will join Kristofer as our top central defender pairing, but we lost Boyata and Benkovic, so there remains a gap in the squad – perhaps one for a more traditional looking ‘project’.

The shadow of Daniel Prodan lingers in Scottish football.  Prodan was a £2.2m Rangers signing in 1998, but whatever was done at his medical, a knee injury was not diagnosed.  The player never played a game for the club, which was so chastened, it passed up the chance to sing John Hartson a year later.  Hartson had a perfectly good knee, which had recovered from an earlier operation.  Hartson went on to do well elsewhere, including against Rangers, who, having bought Prodan, lost Hartson, then punished by Hartson, were cursed by a unique treble.

Two years ago Celtic signed South African central defender, Rivaldo Cotzee, subject to a medical, which he failed, due to a knee injury.  The player has played only a dozen games since, all in South Africa.

What do we know about knee injuries?  Sometimes they get better, sometimes they don’t.  David Turnbull must now wait for the outcome of an operation next week, which will determine his future in the game.  Let’s hope he makes a full recovery; he was certainly a player I looked forward to seeing at Celtic.

  2. The only people who know what is going on is kt, his agent, maybe a couple of close family members, reps at celtic and perhaps the londerers. I would love to keep kt he is a class player but like every player he will want to test himself at the highest level possible.

No one can force kt to do anything he does not want to do. if I were to hazard a guess kt has agree he will be informed about any interest in him and asked If he fancies it. KT would like to talk to the londerers, celtic agree so long as they match our valuation.

I dont believe br is chasing mcgregor so Its easy to say he is not going anywhere. That may change if interest builds and he wants to discuss with interest parties. Player hold all the aces and will get their way sooner or later.

Canamalar- the interest in KT,has not been discouraged, i give you that,if he wasn’t for sale,we would have said so.HH

  4. Whether it is Bolo at Rapid Vienna, and/or Peraud of Nice… we are definitely pursuing a couple of left backs.

In terms of right backs, does anyone know anything, in terms of targets ?

I’ve heard the guy Baldrock at Sheffield Utd, and Tommy Smith as potential targets. But both those links have went quiet

    Bada..,

Has he requested a transfer ?

For me it’s simple logic, if he’s no asked for a transfer then he’s getting chased, people can dress it up any way they want buy the facts speak for themselves regardless of whether the final decision is his, he is being told by the Plc that they value the money over him and he should go.

    Selections all over the place.

Players just returning from injury, vital players out injured, players playing out of position.

That squad was depleted all season, and we still won the treble once again.

Consistency is what we struggled with, we never fielded the same starting 11 in 2 consecutive games.

It alright saying whatever 11 we rustle together should beat the beggars on any given Sunday, football isn’t that simple though.

They never once won a game last season when it really mattered, not one vital fixture did they win.

You look again at the long term injuries our best footballers were sidelined with last season was unprecedented.

Hawking puir wee Kieran Tierney around any English club that will listen.

Half of them don’t know who he is or would not have any interest in him were it not for PL’s hawking him around.

Of course, KT is completely in the dark about all of this and will only find out when it’s too late and he’s been sold.

    Have I got this right?

Everything else aside. Stevie Clarke had the measure of Slippy G’s Sevco side. That contributed more to our 9 point gap than anything else. Our own head to head record vs Sevco wasn’t worth writing home about

    Ron67,

You’ll provide the quote from KT that says he wants to go?

    Naw I doubt you will

  10. 16 Roads

I get what you are saying, but the teams we put out should have been good enough to beat them, they didn’t for whatever reason, it could be the same this coming season, who knows without that crystal ball.

The league will come down to our games against them, I can not see them losing so many points at home like they did this past season, I still think we will be good enough, but it will be down to the games against them I believe.

I told you that football was not played on paper, yip, it’s not that simple is it.

    KT’s transfer request ?

Suits were no too bad with Motherwell but hawking our greatest assets, aye that’s bad especially when they are happy where they are.

You can fool yourself you often do, Has anyone suggested KT is in the dark? Only you so far, as usual straw man argument trying to grab the narrative.

All any of us have heard from the bhoy is that he’s living the dream, now he is being forced to reevaluate and move on.

  13. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    Bada..,

As I said, it’s the acceptance and encouragement for that acceptance, that we should be selling class players that want to stay, if he did not want to stay then fair enough but the bhoy is living the dream and this blog are ok with him getting punted out the door. We’ve got enough money in the bank, it’s quality players on the park we need especially ones that want to be here.

  14. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    SFTB,

I’d also expect if the Plc told him they would by accepting offers for him, they are in fact telling him it’s time to move on which would, if his love of the club is as strong as we’re led to believe, hurt his feelings, that would sour the relationship would it not?

Your the psychology major you tell us how rejection affects young men?

  15. CANAMALAR

Any PLC that I have ever had the misfortune to deal with are anything to go by, they will have a gagging clause in a contract, it’s just how they operate.

  16. Big Georges Fan Club - Hail, Hail, Wee Oscar on

    Re: KT.

Assuming that the £25M figure is correct, my admittedly sketchy understanding of release clauses is that this will be the sum that has been included in KT’s contract – agreed by Celtic, KT’s Agent, and KT himself – as the figure that would automatically allow other clubs to speak to KT and his representative.

I think it is possibly a fairly neutral situation – not necessarily the case that Celtic are punting KT, or that KT is agitating for a move.

All parties have agreed in advance that, if a club offers £25M, then they have the right to speak to KT and his representatives. In insisting that a £25M bid must be made, Celtic are, I expect, simply abiding by the terms of the contractual agreement that is in place with KT and his Agent.

If a club does not meet the valuation, Celtic do not need to let a club speak to KT – no club has met the evaluation, so Celtic have not given permission for that contact to be made.

If a club meets the valuation then, as per the release clause in the contract agreed with KT and his Agent, KT and the Agent then can discuss, if they wish, the offer from the other club. At that point they have a decision that they are free to make.

Only if another club DOESN’T make a bid that meets the contractual release clause BUT nevertheless Celtic DO give permission for formal discussion with KT and the Agent do we know that EITHER Celtic are trying to punt KT OR KT is agitating for a move.

    I think.

Bobo was in it for the money, diametrically opposite to KTs case, if he stays it will be because he loves the club, he will get much better money if he leaves.

  20. “I spoke to Odsonne two weeks ago and he came to me first. He said, ‘I hear your name a lot’,” Julien said.

“We were just chatting and when it started getting serious I asked him a couple of questions and he told me a lot of good things about the club. After that, my mind was made up.”

Always good to read positive comments about our club, especially from the players

Of course, but here was a player with a contract that the club agreed to sell, who refused to go and also told everyone he wasn’t going and why :O)

  22. What are the PLC going to do if someone breaches a confidentially clause? I’ll tell you, they will do nothing.

  23. “I know Bobo Balde was also at Celtic,” Jullien added. “I know his little brother, Yasser. I played with him when I was younger at Auxerre. Every day he was speaking about what his brother did.”

    Big George…,

Obviously Arsenal don’t know if there’s a real ease clause, and if there is I’m sure they would find out either through the agent or the Plc. Which suggests to me there is no release clause since they are making offers.

I’d also suggest release clauses are included on the player/agent conditions for signing new deals because they are using the club as a stepping stone.
