Shadow of Prodan, Jullien a different type of project

307

From what I see in photographs, Christopher Jullien, who completed his transfer to Celtic this morning, is 8’6”, chiselled, and already filling the Celtic Park tunnel.  We needed at least one central defender, so I am delighted he is in so early in the transfer window.

Second observation (after his stature): he is not a ‘project’, or at least, he’s an older and more expensive project than we normally buy.  We will continue to sign players for less than €8m, but there is also value in this space.  If this is the new norm, it is where we should be aiming.

Christopher will join Kristofer as our top central defender pairing, but we lost Boyata and Benkovic, so there remains a gap in the squad – perhaps one for a more traditional looking ‘project’.

The shadow of Daniel Prodan lingers in Scottish football.  Prodan was a £2.2m Rangers signing in 1998, but whatever was done at his medical, a knee injury was not diagnosed.  The player never played a game for the club, which was so chastened, it passed up the chance to sing John Hartson a year later.  Hartson had a perfectly good knee, which had recovered from an earlier operation.  Hartson went on to do well elsewhere, including against Rangers, who, having bought Prodan, lost Hartson, then punished by Hartson, were cursed by a unique treble.

Two years ago Celtic signed South African central defender, Rivaldo Cotzee, subject to a medical, which he failed, due to a knee injury.  The player has played only a dozen games since, all in South Africa.

What do we know about knee injuries?  Sometimes they get better, sometimes they don’t.  David Turnbull must now wait for the outcome of an operation next week, which will determine his future in the game.  Let’s hope he makes a full recovery; he was certainly a player I looked forward to seeing at Celtic.

    SFTB,

I suggest both ifs can be removed, how does that do, I’m satisfied that KT has not made a transfer request, and we know from their own words they are making it known they are accepting offers. So your alternatives disappear, no likely, cause you love an argument but you know as well as I do both statements are true, the Plc are hawking KT who is happy at Celtic.

If he goes it will be because he feels he has little choice in the matter, he watched how Bobo was treated when he crossed the Plc.

  3. Does anyone think Aiden McGeady really wanted to go to far flung Russia to play for Spartak or was he told in no uncertain terms he had to go because we wanted the money?

    So McGeady couldn’t say no?

You do realise bosman happened and players are now in control.

Why is McGeady still at Sunderland in the English 3rd division despite the club having money problems

  5. The Huddle

Say no and face the consequences of upsetting the hierarchy at CP or do what he was told? Tough choice if you ask me.

If course I’m aware of Bosman but that doesn’t mean every player is in total control of every situation, that’s a very black and white outlook. The reality is more nuanced. Certain situations will arise like they did for Aiden and he won’t have much choice but to go.

As for Aiden and Sunderland fc, don’t see the relevance to our club.

Hello again all you young rebels.

I’ve been scared to open the computer all week, thinking the first thing

i’ll see is Keiran is off to Arsenal.

Now i know it’s the way of the football world nowadays and i’ve heard

all the arguments, it’s a short career, bad injury etc. etc.

But that bhoy is the soul of our club, he is the epitome of what all our

young wanabees aspire to attain, and a future captain, so all in all he is

what typifies our mantra ” More than a club ”

The way i see it if he goes it’s because he wants to, o.k we get somebody

else of quality in, but for how long? two seasons at most and you just know

if they’re any good then they’re off first hint or sniff from the EPL.

But, and my dream scenario is, Keiran coming out and saying ” i’m staying

with the club i love ” aka big Billy, Tommy, Jinky et al.

Maybe i’m just being naive and things are different now but how do

i tell a young bhoy who’s parents have just bought him his first hoops top

after a lot of brainwashing from our young celts, that Arsenal are a bigger

    club than Celtic.

So for me Keiran staying will be better than any new signing, quality or

    otherwise.

On a brighter not, the wonderful Lewis Capaldi coming on tour to Oz.

He is being played on all the major radio networks here and best of all my

  12. Good morning CQN from a sun burnt Garngad

Glad wee have the big basketball player on board, as I have said previously I like my backs to be big units, at 6ft5 Christopher Jullien joins 6ft 4 Jozo and our Viking at 6ft 5… Having never seen the new bhoy play, I hope he lives up to the other 2. I am not sure I like the back 3 formation, it’s ok if you have the correct personel in front and I don’t know if we have. Although if KT stays then left side sorted, need an attacking/ defending right/wing back for that to work.

    Anyway onwards and upwards.

Personally I would offer KT an improved deal of £50-£60k a week, why feck about.

Then we are not having to recruit and we have let 10 salaries go over the last few weeks.

    Hail Hail

  13. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

The release clause is a myth propagated by those who want the money. KT wants to stay so no need.

  14. Tin hat time

Kieran is a very good player. With a scouting hat on , my take is

    – good solid defender

    – retains possession well

    – delays playing the winger in very often

    – best played in formation where the winger is played infield leaving the wing free

    – comes more into the game second half

KT may or may not leave but I do get frustrated with his lack of combination play with his winger , Sinky started to play better when Izzy came in although defensively Izzy had lost it. So there are like all players improvements to be made in his game.

Hope he stays for years …..

    Bankibhoy1,

When Celtic supporters, support the Hawking and sale of our best players then there should be a sanity clause with the season ticket terms and conditions.

  17. Gaslighting

Def – a form of psychological manipulation in which a person seeks to sow seeds of doubt in a targeted individual or in members of a targeted group, making them question their own memory, perception, and sanity.

Recently used to give us Trump and Brexit. Previously used to good use by Hitler et al.

Football example would be as you prepare to play for an historic 9IAR and unprecedented 10IAR, you sow the seeds of gossip repeatedly that your two most outstanding homegrown talents are v likely to leave. With no explanation as to why the club MUST helplessly acquiesce. Fans are then left thinking, ‘well at least we got £25m for KT. Arsenal were only going to offer 15’

I’m hanging on to your every word there, we need Keiran to stay.

He knows it, we all need it, if he doesn’t stay then why should any

    of us bother.

All those wonderful fans all over the world doing their bit for Celtic

whether it’s starting up supporters clubs, doing charity work for

the Celtic foundation, or , and god bless them i’ve done it myself, those

that get up at dark o clock to board trains, boats and planes just to see

If Keiran can’t see out the next two seasons till we get the ten then all

my faith in allegiance or emotional attachment to our club will nosedive.

After all if a legend in the making who is already earning a wonderful salary

beyond anything we could attain in our lifetime, wants more than the

    Celtic support can give him.

Why should any of us bother?

But, no pressure Keiran you know what you want to do.

KT will stay, I know he will. How do I know? I feel it in my water when I go to P@@s.

I suspect very few actually do know the truth or have real inside knowledge on the matter.

I’ve said before that I believe if he goes it will be because he wants to go, I don’t think for one min that he could pushed out the door. He may be tied to a confidentiality clause if he does leave though his friends and family wouldn’t be. If you’d ever met his father you would know that he wouldn’t be slow in letting the wider support know what went on, I doubt he would stay quiet during the process of the transfer either, so if KT is to be shoved out the door, I’m of the belief that we would know about it before the move was completed and the MSM would just love to peruse that story as it could lead to civil war among the fans.

We see already how there are those who already think PL is hawking him around for £25m, I just don’t believe it, maybe I just don’t want to, who knows.
