Shakhter boss fears Samaras, will defend

378

Shakhter Karagandy manager, Viktor Kumykov, spoke to the media yesterday, and again this morning, ahead of tomorrow’s Champions League play-off first leg game against Celtic.

“Some of the players who played on Friday night will not make the starting line-up against Celtic but we have a limited squad so I cannot rotate too much.

“Celtic have a high calibre across their squad of around 20 players, they can rotate players without dropping standards.  Whoever we face will be difficult.

“Their most dangerous players are the striker Samaras and wingers Forrest and Commons.

“We will attack but we will keep things tight at the back.  The most important thing about a home game is not to concede.  Celtic are a quality team but we are going to stand up to them with our best game.  We have our plans.

“I said a few times that it’s going to be tough game for us. We are new in the Champions League, Celtic have lots of experience in games in Europe, they even won this tournament. But this does not mean that we are going to be taking a beating. We will do our best, will give our full strength to achieve a good result.

“We watched Celtic in last season’s Champions League, and against Liverpool.  They are stronger than us but football is a game where the strongest don’t always win.  They play a physical game, it will be hard playing against them.

“Unfortunately Toktar Schangyalyschbai and Mikhail Lunin will both miss the game through injury.

“We would like a full stadium, the crowd is going to be an important factor for us.

“We have achieved our main target, Europa League qualification, so the pressure is off us.  We can take a risk in our play.”

Captain, Andrey Finonchenko, added, “Our dreams started with the games against BATE, few imagined we could beat them.  The results against BATE and Skernderbeu have given us faith.  We will do our best tomorrow.”

Stories of the ritualistic slaughter of a ram inside the Astana Arena this morning are true. No medieval stone unturned.

Not been on for a while, but done a bit of lurking. Read about Oscar and am praying for him and wee Karina (the daughter of my friend) who also has Neuroblastoma and is currently cancer free for the 3rd consecutive month. Remember her in your prayers also.

Re Karagandy: Think Celtic should be able to negotiate this hurdle over two legs if they can avoid a bombscare opening in the first leg.

11:37 on 19 August, 2013Big Balde has got to start up front with Sammy on the left of the midfield and Commons on the right.

Agree for a couple of reasons,Balde is a striker,Samaras offers so much more to the team coming from the left side, and height to defend their corners etc.I think Mulgrew will replace Izzy for the same reason.

If its that hard to get away from facts, how did you manage to get it so wrong? We’ve got more than one striker.

    Now gies a gobble.

Which one of the many strikers we have played on Saturday?I like Stokes, but a great many dont.Balde,by Lennys statement is “Work in progress”.If Stokes is still out, which one of these plentiful strikers will play on Tuesday.Facts, not fantasy. But your title excuses you,as you seem to make many.

Going to Altinkum in Turkey next week

Anyone know of a tim friendly bar there ? Or can I still watch STV/ITV on my lap top while there ?

Think we will be alright tomorrow – they will come at us first 15 minutes then we will take control. A 1-0 win would do me

You will most likely need a VPN (Virtual Private Network) to get STV abroad. This ensures that your internet service provider thinks you are in the UK as STV will be blocked abroad.

Plenty of them about, cost about £5 a month. You can cancel the subscription at any time.

    Hope this helps.

  14. “I love it when a plan comes together.” So said Hannibal Smith, leader of the soldiers of fortune known as the A-Team.

Saints went to the Hawthorns on Saturday in need of a new plan. Having been bullied by Youssouf Mulumbu and Claudio Yacob last season, they badly needed to add a bit of steel of their own to the centre of midfield. Enter Saints’ enforcer, Victor Wanyama.

It couldn’t have gone any better. The bullied became the bully, Saints not only kept hold of their lunch money, they left West Bromwich with the Baggies’ too. Wanyama was immense.

There is strong, and there is STRONG. Wanyama plays with a ferocity that often looks like it will overspill into reckless, yet doesn’t. The ease with which he brushes off opponents is staggering, and often prompted the referee into penalising him unfairly.

The effect he has on players who dare to go shoulder to shoulder with him is like that of a bumper on the pinball. He approaches the game like a bulldozer stuck in fast forward effortlessly bounding forwards with ball (often several yards in front of him) opposition players pinging off him like a north seeking pole trying to attach to another. You simply don’t take the ball off of Victor Wanyama. You’ll get it when he is done with it.

It was an effervescent debut performance and he was man of the match by a distance. Yacob was a shadow of the player we saw last time and resorted to niggly fouls, while Mulumbu was still the Baggies best player, but lacked the impact of last season.

It is nice to know that Saints identified a problem with the squad and rectified it over the summer. I, along with many others, thought the £12 million transfer fee might have been a gamble, now it looks like it has been a steal.

When your central man is doing such a commendable job, the rest of the team can settle into theirs, and while this was far from a spectacular performance from Saints, it was an accomplished one, and a very good opening three points.

We can expect big things from Wanyama and likewise this Saints squad over the coming season. The future is bright and with the likes of Wanyama and Dejan Lovren joining the current crop of young talented players and England’s latest hero, Rickie Lambert, soon everyone will want a piece of Saints.

    Keep the faith

  27. Kojo

I agree Sammy is most effective on the wide left. I do think however that Neil has undoubtedly signed Derk for that very position, so, opportunities for Sammy in that role will become more and more limited.

Given Neil seems not to prefer Stokes in away Euro ties as a lone striker, I get the feeling that tomorrow, Kojo is gonna be – “furious” – since Sammy will be entrusted with the lone striker role.
