Shane Duffy and space for a project

712

At 6’ 4” and built like the Free Derry Wall in the town he knows so well, Shane Duffy brings experience and assurance to the middle of the Celtic defence.  What would have happened had he been at the club eight days earlier is imponderable.

I don’t know Shane well enough to comment on that question but I am assured by Irish friends he has been an impenetrable leader in their national team for years.  He is at Celtic because his time as first choice at Brighton is over, but he is still only 28, which is the middle of the peak years for many central defenders. We have recruited a player who will be influential in the chase for 10.

The most pleasing aspect of his signature is the tactical shift another central defender gives us towards three at the back.  Surely Shane, Kristoffer and Christopher will all play when fit?  That being the case, I would like to see us add one more central def.: space for ‘a project’.

  1. Jocks Immortal Lions on

    Afternoon all,

Welcome Shane Duffy to Celtic, go get them big man, nice to see your dream being fulfilled.

I believe we now only need a left back and right winger unless any other first team squad members leave. I still think Ajer or Ntcham may go particularly if their agents have asked for valuations. Rogic seems destined to leave also.

We must do our best to keep Eddy but I do worry about a late offer you can’t refuse from the EPL.

On balance very happy with the transfer window so far.

The difference with Brown/McStay and Ferguson is they had talent, he’s a solid player good in a scrappy match but when it gets expansive he’s found wanting by all means continue to see what you want to see but it a NO from me

No insult troll, I was merely redressing nonsense with facts, figures & informed opinion. Or at least as much facts and figures as it deserved.

I have no aspirations to be more of a fan than anyone else.

If someone has a different point of view and wishes to engage, I would expect the following:

    “I don’t agree with you on *******, because………

    Name-calling & insults waste everyone’s time.

  5. I suppose it’s too early to know what format this year’s AGM will take (in November ?), but either way there are important issues to be addressed and explanations sought.

The pursuit of 10-i-a-r should not negate the need for scrutiny of what’s been happening in Scottish Football administration as it affects our club over the last year and of course previous years.

    Watch this space.

  6. Is there any football support in Europe more politically engaged than Celtic fans?

It’s part of what makes the Club special.

Seems to me that some are missing part of the picture.

Ernie, I agree but it’s becoming tedious on here. No one is going to change their political viewpoint so why bother?

It’s like having a pal who supports Sevco – you are never going to convince them to support Celtic…..

  8. I thought Chris Ajer would be our next VVD. I still think there is a cracking player there, but he has not progressed as much as I thought he would.

Although I would love him to stay and become the player his potential merits, I fear a relatively big money offer will see him leave.

Once away from the hammer throwers in Scotland, I would expect him to excel.

His potential and current contract to summer 2022 means we should not entertain a bid < £ 18m .

To reitterate, I hope he stays and forms an integral part of our team for the next few years; but.

    HH to all.

  9. Not too bothered with all the political chat on the blog.

I probably slim read at best. Some are too long to hold the attention of the Twitter generation.

The constant bile around the independence referendum was the blogs low point. I have friends on both sides of the vote.

Confession time, I also like Ernie’s posts. Very succinct and oft times droll.

  10. “I’m delighted, it’s something that I’ve always dreamed of doing and I’m just excited to get up there now and get going. Hopefully I can do my best for the club. I’m over the moon, it’s been a long time coming!

“People will know the connection with Derry in Ireland and Celtic, and it’s all we knew, really. Growing up, I was lucky enough to get over to a few games and experience the atmosphere. It’s my boyhood club and it’s literally a dream when you’re a kid. Now I get the chance to go to Celtic Park and to play for the club is a huge honour and hopefully I can do them proud.”

Duffy described fellow Derry man and ex-Celt Paddy McCourt as a great role model, and now looks forward to working with countryman Neil Lennon in the weeks and months ahead.

He added: “I can’t wait to get going now and get the chance to work with Neil Lennon. I’ve watched his whole career as a player and manager at Celtic, and to get the chance to work with him now is a real honour and something I’m really looking forward to.

“It’s a huge season for Celtic. I don’t need a reason to go to Celtic, but if ever there was a reason it’s this year, to make history. It’s something I’ve been following closely over the years, hoping they’d win the league every year.

“To be part of it now is a huge honour, but there’s obviously a lot of hard work to get there. I know the fans are optimistic and I am as well going then. Let’s do the hard work and reap the rewards in the end.”

    Sorry, you’ve lost me there.

  12. He added: “I’m looking forward to playing in front of the Celtic fans, this was one of the main reasons I came here. I think Celtic fits perfectly for me as a striker, so I’m really looking forward to making the fans happy.

“I’m really looking forward to joining up with the team and helping them reach our goals. I want to be successful, I hope to improve myself and the team, as well.

“The manager’s encouragement was also a big part of me coming here. As a football player, especially as a striker, you need confidence. I was happy that the gaffer called me, he made it easier for me to come and sign for Celtic.”

Agreed. In case you missed it previously, thanks for the heads up on Anti Social by Andrew Marantz .”

Glad you enjoyed it. I found it sad and annoying in equal measures the lengths that people will go to to disrupt, cause chaos and knowingly spread false information. There seems to be no great point to much of the activity other tha to make us distrust researched and evaluated information and rely instead on a Boorish Man of the People who can tell lies with a straight face while pretneding he is your pal by inventing peopleyou can hate in common.

Goebells wasn’t the first and they are getting more brazen.

As we saw with Sevco in 2012 people often prefer not just a pretty lie to the ugly truth, but they’ll take an ugly lie as well, in preference.

  14. I would personally like to see Barry Douglas brought in for left back . I think he could help improve and develop Greg Taylor

  16. Elyounoussi doesn’t hide how much that faith from his boss means and, having rejected Real Betis to commit again to Celtic, he said:

“Neil Lennon showed a lot of confidence in me.

“Even in the Cup Final against Rangers, I wasn’t 100 per cent, but he wanted me to play in that game. It didn’t work well for me that day but it showed he had a lot of confidence in me. I’m just happy we won the cup.

“That’s part of the reason why I wanted to come here for another year. I feel like I have more to give.

“At the time, it was frustrating with injury and I had a setback after that which put me out of action for a couple of months, but now that’s all gone and I’m just focusing on the new season.

“The manager is a very good mentor. He knows the quality of each player, he knows what to say to each player.

    M Elyounoussi

I only hope Elyounoussi repays Neil’s confidence in him – must say I’m underwhelmed so far this season.

I’m old enough to remember what a number of Celtic fans thought of Scott Brown.

Lewis Ferguson’s career trajectory so far is similar to that of Brown. He has over 100 career games in the Scottish top flight by age 21. (Scott Brown had around 93)

That puts him ahead of plenty of his peers in his development and where he can go.

Ask yourself, if he was called Lewis McStay would you want him?

There are aspects of his game he needs to work on. He certainly has a propensity to dive into crazy tackles and was rightly sent off against us.

But he can take a penalty and chips in with assists (similar to what Calum McGregor achieved at that age)

I’d imagine that all his stats would improve if he played for us. But it’s not just stats, I was thoroughly impressed by his performance against Hibernian.

He will probably never play for us for obvious reasons. But I really do hope he heads down south as he’s going to be an improvement on Ryan Jack.

I haven’t seen enough of him to decide either, although I do remember his red card against us in the Cup final. As to him not signing for us anyway because of his family connections. Did I not hear before that he is a Celtic supporter as a result of his mother’s family? Could be wrong but if he doesn’t come to Celtic I doubt it would be to do with his father or uncle.

Don’t think he’s even a natural left footed player and his effectiveness coming inside onto his right hasn’t really been seen this season, Reykjavik game and flashes aside.

    —————————————–

    I blame the schools.

So, the town of DUMBOrtan (note the early Britonic spelling) is named from a historical event when Hannibal Barca led the Barbarians across the Arrochar Alps using Elephants as his beasts of Burden.

Around the area, some place names to this day commemerate these events, but little is taught in the curriculum (romano latin word meaning learn it) today.

This was in the middle of winter 55AD , and a suprise tactic to attack the Romans who had a network of forts around the Clutha river and a castle on top of the rock know as Alt Cluta (literally transalated as Clyde Rock).

The town still has a Castle road which connected to the Antonine wall. So it is not known what was built first, the road or the castle.

We know Hannibal Barca founded the town of Barca in what became modern Catalonia, amassed a great army, and introduced many exotic animals and fruits to the area from his native Cathage. One advantage of this was vast forrest of wood as a bye product of food production. So now he has a navy to conquer the hated Romans, and he would take his fight to the far corners of the empire.

The barbarians landed at Lochgoilhead (Elephants bay in Carthaginian).

Military strategist’s contend to avoid coming up the Clutha in their Banana Boats into the hostile lands of the dominant PORTONIONII tribe, a branch of the Hibernio Celts who arrived on these shore decades before. Who feirecely defended the ocean bar and lea’s park areas.

Hannibal then marched through the Arrochar Alps with more than 100,000 troops, 12000 horses and nearly 40 war elephants. He met little resistance from local forces allied to Rome. But by going over the Alps he manouvered around the ancient A83 transverse. To this day travellers on the path refer to the frequent landslides as “Shites of the Mammoth”. a terrifying reminder of what could have happened in those ancient days. The locals too this day in their own forgotten language have a phrase handed down when getting through the dreadful pass – “gabh fois agus bi taingeil”, we cant be certain but modern linguists think it might translate as “rest and be thankful” or the more contentious “no parking for campers”.

One Roman general Conelius Scipio attempted to confront him at the Leven River, but Hannibal had already crossed it and was on his way to the Rock, it is written in old scrolls that Hannibal delivered a sneering insult to the general “Thats me crossed the RiverCon”.

Little is known about the actual battle for the Castle, but what we can say to this day, that the Coat of Arms for DUMBOrtan commemerates these great events to this day , The Elephant & Castle.

As a footnote to this it is believed Hannibal remained in Scotland, retiring with his 37 animals to a sanctuary , building a bothy up the back of modern day Greenock, and a scar in the landscape can still be seen left by the paciderms known as The Cut. This was celebrated in the great conservationist film starring Billy Connolly in the role of Hannibal in the powerful drama The Elephants Graveyard.

Think of Born Free except without lions, and the elephants condemned to go to war. Fine film.

As a footnote to the footnote.

The people of Barca were so devestated by Hannibal nor returing they went into mourning and changed the name of the town to BarcaLonas

Finally , Castle Rock is indeed a sweet treat invented in Dumbarton.
