Shift in perception, winter solstice of 54-65

518

Don’t give me your ‘slump’ mockery. Just think for a minute, what if this IS our slump? Five league games in 17 days, four of which were won by a single goal is as bad as it’s been since Brendan Rodgers took over as manager.

We have, of course, shuffled the pack. With a hefty nine games this month, Brendan is correct to rest the weary legs which concluded our Champions League group only two weeks ago. He also has a full programme over the festive period to prepare for.

With 20 wins in 21 domestic games this season we’ve won the first trophy, scoring 11 and without conceding. Win our remaining games this month and we’ll be at least 17 clear “and it’s not New Year”. With a game in hand.

Scottish football has never had such a dominant champion, even during the two nine-in-a-row eras. It’s been achieved with largely the same squad as last season, while we were the only team participating in European group competition – and with a sustainable financial model.

I know talk of “slump” is ridiculous, but I bet you’ve already picked up a shift in perception of what is normal for Celtic. Most of us have been around long enough to remember the dark days. Some of us have been around to remember the winter solstice, which lasted from 1954 to 1965, but we’re all susceptible to recent-experience bias.

The collapse of Aberdeen this season robbed us of what competition we had but in compensation, we’re watching a great Celtic team come together. Team development does not happen on a linear plane. It requires risks to be taken and mistakes to be made, but no one is in any doubt about Celtic’s direction of travel.

  1. The Green Man says SACK THE Board on

    Morning Celts

Is anybody really surprised that the PLC are snakes?

    Cant say i am.

And i have been saying for a very loooong time that they dont give two fecks about the supporters.

Looks like i was right all along.

They are in bed with the huns, simple as that.

However….there will be a sting in the tail.

I love Celtic….but the PLC as far as im concerned, never have been, and never will be Celtic supporters.

A huge Hail Hail to the Res 12 bhoys….Real Celtic supporters.

    I salute you.

The van Dijk sell on ,might be from any profit made by Southampton, not the whole transfer fee…..

    ——————————————————————————–

I seem to remember that Wanyama’s sell on fee was based on sale price? Could be wrong.

If the percentage was to be based on the delta between purchase price and sale price then I’d hope that the percentage was higher than 10% :)

  4. Harry Brady’s news was that nearly £225,000 has been raised through the Celtic Foundation’s Christmas events. A fantastic achievement!

  5. Kevjungle:

Your point about fan ownership not allowing the SFA to get away with it…….I don’t doubt you are correct but I can safely say… and it pains me to say…that we wouldn’t have had the success we have had if the fans had been in charge since Fergus walked away. Our emotional blinkers would have clouded some of the more pragmatic decisions that have been made.

RES12, the problem with RES12…. and it’s always been the problem….. that it’s not caught the wider supports imagination. Until it does that then the board can kick into the long grass. It never comes up in conversations with other supporters I have, apart from when I’m speaking to Winning Captains.

Thing is, I don’t think it will ever fly with the wider support now.

    As long as we don’t buy G51 2XD I’d say it’s a good investment!!! :)

  7. Keving 10.18.

Correct. The wider support are blissfully unaware or don’t have the appetite .

You can apply the same ignorance over the wee tax case.

    Proven cheating.

One thread on the shuffleboard regarding res12 the other night.

    It dominated CQN.

The efforts of the gang of 4 deserve better coverage.

How you get is the problem.HH

  8. Bada!

Is that straightforward information or is it something cryptic?

  9. KEVING on 22ND DECEMBER 2016 10:18 AM

I agree with you on both points.

I would qualify my agreement on the first, yes we would have let our Hearts rule our Heads and possibly not had the success that we have had. However, we (Supporters) should have been allowed representation on The Board, if we had we would have had a better chance of Res12 succeeding in my opinion.

It is too late in my opinion to mobilise the Celtic Supporters in regard to Res12. In my opinion what was required was a movement akin to Celts for Change including collaboration with other Clubs Supporters.

Who knows when and how Res12 will play out but I think it is done, alas.

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

  10. HAMILTONTIM @ 10:15 AM,

Excellent stuff, well done to all involved… tremendous achievement.

Still not sure I’d call it sensational news. Outstanding certainly.

I was hoping the sensational news was…

Celtic to play in away kit at Ibrox… Maginers have allowed the players to don Persistance beats Resistance on the Jerseys:)

    Hail Hail

  11. Raising £250,000 really is sensational but I am confident it is not what many were hoping for. Positive news rarely outs negative news from the Headlines.

    On another topic:

The comments on Res 12 ( with obvious exceptions) remind me of this old one :

” There are only two types of people in the world, those who can extrapolate from incomplete data…”

  13. The wider acknowledgement of Resolution 12 and a lot more, is the reason why justice is hamstrung.

Few Celtic supporters know what is going.

I witnessed a facebook Celtic group discussion the other night when one respondent proclaimed he couldn’t be “a***d” about Res 12.

My in laws, a big Celtic supporting family, have no interest and look at me askance when I discuss the matter.

Strangely enough, the only one who is interested and knowledgeable is a Jambo.

Their support, hated on CQN could be allies on this issue.

  14. BIG-CUP-WINNERS

    Askance. Love that word.

I agree with your post, only a handful of my mates are interested in Res12, most of them used to be but have had their motivation sapped by perceived lack of progress

SFA doesn’t look at terms of contracts; so an “illegal” contract (like £1/week) could be registered, MSPs told. Johann Lamont incredulous

I wouldn’t be surprised if that also applies to adult players. So we see nothing has been learned from the whole side-letters issue.

However, based on some other other tweets from Philip Sim, it looks like it’s becoming clear to people outside the game, that football is not being run by professional or competent administrators.

Change might end up happening via an unexpected route.

VVD is going nowhere this window. He’s just signed a new deal and Jose Fonte is likely to be sold (his contract is running down)

More likely to move in the summer I’m afraid.

The government are determined to get involved in the running of football. They are already of the impression that it can’t administer itself and can no longer go on being run by a jumped up bowling club committee…..

Magnificent, and well done to all to all involved.

Wouldn’t be the 1st player to move just after signing a new deal. Usually offered to encourage a player to stay, or ensure any offers are too good to refuse.

    No.

How would you feel if Celtic sold BOTH Sviatchenko and Simunovic in the January window despite Sviatchenko having 4 years left on his deal.

You’d suggest it would be absolutely mad to leave the defence so shorthanded for the 2nd half of the season.

Why do we expect Southampton (who run a club effectively) to do something so stupid?

    ____

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2016/12/19/southampton-will-refuse-sell-virgil-van-dijk-january-may-listen/

Virgil van Dijk, but could sell captain Jose Fonte if a sizeable offer comes in.

Van Dijk is attracting interest from the two Manchester clubs following his commanding performances since joining Southampton from Celtic last year but, in line with their successful transfer strategy of recent seasons, Saints plan only to consider major offers in the summer if they have identified a replacement.

After signing a new six-year contract in May, Van Dijk is settled in Hampshire and there is little prospect of him pushing for a January move. He was bought for only £13 million but his valuation has since soared to around £40 million.

Fonte, who refused to sign an improved contract offer earlier in the year, was rested from Sunday’s 3-1 win against Bournemouth. Manager Claude Puel said that it was simply down to his need to rotate players, but Fonte was already disappointed to play no part in the club’s Europa League campaign following his pivotal role in Southampton’s upward journey from League One in 2010.

Fonte, who will turn 33 later this week, received the offer of a pay-rise after helping Portugal to win the European Championship but no extension to a contract that expires in 2018 amid interest from Manchester United and Everton.

Southampton offered to make him one of their top earners on around £70,000-a-week but they are not prepared to extend the time on his contract. In line with many leading clubs for players into their thirties, they would simply expect to review the situation next season.

Manchester United and Everton were interested in Fonte but whether they would now be willing to pay a transfer fee, as well as offer a longer contract, must be doubtful. It is also unclear now whether Southampton’s increased offer is even still on the table. Fonte is expected to return for Southampton against Tottenham on December 28.

If the wider Celtic support are unaware of the reasons behind Res 12,then they are as thick as yer average hun. And if they are uninterested in how the SFA are still shafting our club, then they can GTF as far as I’m concerned.

If they bought double-glazing from a firm, based on that firm’s advertising blurbs, experience, recommendations from satisfied customers, etc, which then went bust, they’d be the first to write to the papers,MP,whatever, when the firm started up the following day using the same name, staff, premises and advertising blurbs.
