Shift in perception, winter solstice of 54-65

518

Don’t give me your ‘slump’ mockery. Just think for a minute, what if this IS our slump? Five league games in 17 days, four of which were won by a single goal is as bad as it’s been since Brendan Rodgers took over as manager.

We have, of course, shuffled the pack. With a hefty nine games this month, Brendan is correct to rest the weary legs which concluded our Champions League group only two weeks ago. He also has a full programme over the festive period to prepare for.

With 20 wins in 21 domestic games this season we’ve won the first trophy, scoring 11 and without conceding. Win our remaining games this month and we’ll be at least 17 clear “and it’s not New Year”. With a game in hand.

Scottish football has never had such a dominant champion, even during the two nine-in-a-row eras. It’s been achieved with largely the same squad as last season, while we were the only team participating in European group competition – and with a sustainable financial model.

I know talk of “slump” is ridiculous, but I bet you’ve already picked up a shift in perception of what is normal for Celtic. Most of us have been around long enough to remember the dark days. Some of us have been around to remember the winter solstice, which lasted from 1954 to 1965, but we’re all susceptible to recent-experience bias.

The collapse of Aberdeen this season robbed us of what competition we had but in compensation, we’re watching a great Celtic team come together. Team development does not happen on a linear plane. It requires risks to be taken and mistakes to be made, but no one is in any doubt about Celtic’s direction of travel.

I had a conversation over a year ago with an ex colleague, a long long term ST holder. A smart guy with a responsible role in Government so no fool.

He appreciated all of what was being covered but could not countenance giving up his ST and why should he? He doesn’t want to stop supporting Celtic and neither do I, but at least I know now what I am supporting and in what form that support will take, which is not financial.

I’ll go and watch in a pub and cheer on the players or moan at them when they misplace a pass but I’ll try to enjoy the football.

However should TRFC again become our main competition on anything like the previous basis where honest mistakes start to matter (and let’s hope that is a long time off) I’ll just accept we brought it on ourselves, shake my head and say it’s all part of the game so don’t get emotionally involved.

    Time I retired anyway.

Now that we are on the cusp of the Festive Season, I would like to wish all on here the compliments of the season.

To those who have suffered heartbreak and loss, I wish them consolation and the strength to face into another year.

May 2017 bring peace and fulfillment to all our dreams and may the the discontents, begrudgers and inverted snobs discover the pure joy of being a Celtic supporter.

Happy Christmas to all and a ” Felix” Navidad to TET.

  8. Wouldn’t it be fantastic to wait until Easter 17 and then put “Grace” to number 1 just to show them that we are not that bothered by them.

After all by April we will have won the league.

Hope you are well and remember whilst we all have different agendas, including Mr Plc ( who I am not impressed with btw), it could be worse? You could be a zombie!

Working hard on the Walk With Shay(WWS) campaign with a few other good fholks and hope to provide you all a wee update soon. Thanks to all those who have responded to the “Goals for Shay” comp so far ( and indeed any of the WWS initiatives to date), which is starting to fill up nicely and keeping that man, Jobo very busy! Remember if you have not responded so far, to send him a wee email soon at cqnpredictor@gmail.com. It would be a great Christmas present for him :-)

Jobo, I know you do not ask for it, but thank you and indeed to all the WWS soldiers.

Prayers and thoughts to Paddybhoy for his recent family loss and also to Doc for the current family serious illness and indeed to all those other CQNers out there in need of our support and prayers

Don’t disagree in principal and have an antipathy towards the ‘Board’ and their view of/on Sevco.

But …………. CQN is NOT representative of the general Celtic support, however unpalatable that statement is. I remember soooooo clearly the day we drew Sevco in the first semi-final, the League Cup game we eventually won 2 – 0. Heading towards the car my mate after leaving Paradise we heard hundreds, yes HUNDREDS of cars tooting horns because, as we found out when we put on the radio, we had ‘drawn’ Sevco in the semi!!!

I think we should treat them as you would any new club, but all these Celtic fans are entitled to their views as well and they certainly don’t! They DO see them as an extension of THEMS! Therefore, are the Board so wrong??

  27. Bourne

In my opinion your brother took a worthy stand. There are times to challenge and that was certainly one of them. As supporters we knew we were right but sadly successive boards have bowed to both domestic and European authorities.

Be proud of what your brother did.

  28. The old board also threw in the hoops when le merde signed for thems rather than put him out of game for term of that contract with support of CAS and UEFA!
