Shocking result but expected performance

1103

I’m not going to say I saw this coming, I didn’t see defeat, but when I wrote a couple of days ago that you and I have seen a lot more games like Celtic’s away to Lincoln Red Imps than Brendan Rodgers, and about European football in July, I knew this one was never going to play out in a triumphant manner.

On the first day he was appointed I asked one of you to compile Brendan an Efe highlights video – I assume we were all busy. God love Efe, he’s a fine man by all accounts, but he’s three years into a slump which is not going to end at Celtic. Brendan must now be aware. It’s no longer Efe’s fault if he costs us again.

I also made the point previewing this game that we can’t expect a squad comprising only one addition to last season’s group to perform remarkably different in qualification than a year ago. In this sense, Celtic performed as expected, this one had all the hallmarks of our recent Icelandic ventures.

The manager may not be embarrassed at the result (I suspect he might sound different privately) but many supporters are. Gibraltar has a population similar to Bellshill, but without the football heritage and support mechanism. Would defeat to Bellshill Athletic be embarrassing? You bet. Yesterday’s result was too.

We are woefully slow in build-up and have only one player in the squad who can create the 7 or 8 chances per game needed to get a result, and he’s 33 next month and currently injured.

We remain strong favourites to qualify for the next round but there is an enormous amount of work to be done in the next month. This is not a Champions League squad.

  1. Not been on for a while. Currently in a drookit Thailand. Knew the game was on,but was so blase and confident I have only now checked the score. Expected a comfortable win.

    Jaw hit the (wet) deck.

Cannot comment on individual performances as I didn’t see it, however this result sends up a flare that there are systemic, deep rooted issues at the CLUB, not just the team.

I am clinging onto the hope that this debacle has equally shocked BR and he is kicking down the Chairman’s door with 2 pieces of paper. One saying OOT, the other saying IN backed in person by DD. Remember, BR was Desmondo’s choice to put sevco back in their box. This reflects badly on him.

Time for action Celtic. Wednesday will take care of itself, get your mortgage on it,however longer term, root and branch change is required.

    Off oot…. wi a brolly. :(

Didn’t see last night but take it that Efe’s made another howler. I’ve never really blamed Efe he’s not good enough but for some unknown reason is continuously picked for important games, something BR will have to end if he’s to be successful. Embarrassing? Yes.Worst result in our history? Will be if we don’t overturn it. BR needs to get the cheque book out or we have no chance.

  3. Think I’ve worked it out……..

Brendan found Ronnies football coaching for dummies manual , had a read then went and watched that inspirational video (the one were he talks the talk) and thought ( like a lot did ) that it sounded good .Well Brendan you tried it and got the same result as Ro nie.

Wolfsburg on Sat what does Brendan do,go with the same and then change at half time, giving everyone another go. Change it all and go with the younger players and hope that they don’t get mauled by Wolfsburg and then take on the might imps.

All will be revealed in the next episode of Stoap your killing us. :-))

A few days ago, Brendan spoke about how players need to have mental strength to play for Celtic.

    Well….There is your answer.

    Serial Offenders.

No heart, No fight, heads down playing part-timers.

    Clear them out now.

No more excuses….we have just had 2 years of this dross, enough is enough.

If they wont fight for the hoops…if they have no understanding of whats acceptable…..sack the feckers.

    Very concerned about young Paddy.

Forrest actually showed up better than him in the cameo performances in the friendlies.

Paddy couldn’t get past anyone and couldn’t pass to one of us.

I know that that is unfair, because he hardly saw the ball, but when he had it he did nothing.

Hope he gets it together soon. At least BR will have seen how little heart Forrest has.

  6. CultsBhoy - likes Brendan Rodgers level of ambition- well done DD on

As you may or may not have noticed , I am a much less frequent poster than previously. A number of reasons for that but chief among them was that I found myself repeating the same point ad nauseum. I’m self aware enough to appreciate that this was tedious for fellow posters so decided to step out, having made my point.

My point ( apologies) is that Peter Lawwell is the root problem for Celtic. Last night sadly confirmed this again.

As much as I welcomed Brendan Rodgers I had my suspicion that his appointment was not so much the dawning of a new era with the arrival of new Rangers as a stimulus for change, but rather a means by which to punt season tickets.

I’m certain Rodgers was not a Lawwell appointment – Deilawas much more his style – he likes controllable managers – hence MoN and Lenny departed as they did… Strachan was harder work than Deila but still mailable…. No – I suspect Dermott prompted Rodgers… However that was only half a job done. Lawwell is still too influential. I suspect PL time is nearing an end. The fact that we don’t have the players to sell that will bail out this season’s CL failure.

I predict we will win the SPFL and with 50,000+ season tickets in the bag – it’s job done for PL.

More false hope will need to be fabricated next February if he is to pull the same trick over again and ensure renewal of the 50,000+ season tickets.

My suspicions are that we won’t end the season with both Rodgers and Lawwell. One of them will give way.

  8. Only Lee Griffiths merits keeping.

Every other single player should be available for sale.

    Here is the rub.

    They all are.

    Nobody wants them .

Brendan Rodgers can’t come out and slaughter them.

He can’t off load them ,so he needs to keep them on board.

We are in a barrel of shit.

The barrel has been filled up over several years.

This team needed a manager who is a good judge of a player, knows how he wants the team set up.

Knows the type of player required for each position, and knows how to get the best out of them.

A manager who is focused and ruthless.

    MON was the man.

I hope Brendan proves that he is too ,but he has to DEMAND full support and financing from the board.

There will be Armageddon if Brendan fails .

We need to change our scouts.

We need to buy players who will improve the team immediately ,and not because they may mature and have a sell on benefit.

If they can improve the team immediately and have a sell on value ,all the better.

Christie,GMS, Armstrong ,types are not good enough to take us to the CL.

MON would be demanding to see DD this morning.

    Not the other way around.

    Brendan should do likewise.

There is no such thing as the Rodgers revolution.

It has to be a Celtic revolution …or there will be no revolution.

  12. I for one can fully understand why Roberts didn’t kick a ball last night?

Midway through the first-half, and having seen how bad the pitch really was, I turned to my son and said, “Now I see why Roberts isn’t playing.”

Midway through the second-half, with Celtic struggling to find an equaliser, I thought, I hope Brendan doesn’t risk Roberts out of desperation.

At one point in the second-half, young Tierney on the ball tried to change direction and his left leg just sank into whatever was under the plastic and his leg twisted below the knee. You could see him grimace as he limped away. He got lucky. As players ran, their was a spray of black shit behind each step.

Roberts could not possibly have played his type of game on that excuse for a pitch. Bringing him on would have been a big injury risk.

  13. Can’t comment on the game I never saw, but the result has me concerned. Freak results happen in football all the time. I recall Henke’s first game and thought, what a ordinary player he was.We all how wrong I was, and now BR could take us on to greatness. Time will indeed tell I’m certain.

  18. worst result in our history, concerned as are other that LG is played out wide when he scored 40 goals last season playing through the middle. The new lad has some nice touches but will take time to settle. Midfield was a joke I thought I was watching walking football, every pass was slow and behind the player. We have no leaders. Quick fix for next weeks game play Charlie Mulgrew at centre half.

We need a defensive central mid desperately a centre half and a creative midfield player. I’d have played McGeggor instead of Christie as he adds to our goal threat. We lack leaders, goal scorers and pace.

Poor Effe feel sorry for him but the higher the pressure the bigger the calamity.

I am not convinced by Bredan Rodgers thought his Swansea team were really boring.

Like many on here I am realistic about our finances.

However if we get to the champions league group stages we are guaranteed X amount. Let’s say 10 million. I honestly don’t know but let’s say 10.

I think it would be a reasonable risk for a business the size of celtic to invest that amount in staff recruitment in the hope that if the new staff work well we will reach our goals and recover our outlay.

Worse case scenario we have spent 10 million.

Best case scenario we have spent and recouped 10 million and have entertained our loyal customers and created a lot of good will for our enterprise among the broader business community.

Notice I haven’t used any football terms like players fans etc as I hope peter might see this and if I used football parlance he probably wouldn’t comprehend

Roberts and Mc.Gregor play their best football on the ground.

That pitch last night was a graveyard for football players.

    Some sympathy for Efe.

The ball that beat him would be expected to move forward after the bounce, in which case, he would have been on it.

Instead, it bounced backwards and fell to the local constable.

Glasstwothirdsfull is correct, the pack were dying for Brendan to say he was “embarrassed “.

The wee pipsqueak in the BT studio was almost wetting himself in glee and trying to force words of condemnation into JH and JM’s mouths.

    They were smarter than that.

  29. Have to agree with most posts re Leigh Griff, his best position is up front and centre, without him last season would have been a disaster. Now I believe it’s a team game and everyone counts, but Leigh must know who he likes playing alongside him and I don’t think that selection suited him last night. Play to your stregnths Brendan.

    Mama Mia!

Had to agree with many comments regarding the individual performances of some of our players and some of Brendan’s strange team selection decisions (Roberts omission, Leigh’s position, Efe inclusion).

Was this the worst result in our history? Don’t be daft. If it had been a one off game, then yes, maybe but it wasn’t. It was the first half of a double header. I firmly believe that we will beat them comfortably next week and I hope we bury them with an avalanche of goals.

What was the worst result in our history? That one’s easy for me. Artmedia Bratislava 5-0 Celtic. It left us with virtually no chance of going through although we performed gallantly in the second leg, winning 5-0 and hitting woodwork twice.

I said as much myself. Roberts in the two friendlies was awful by his standards and BR did him a big favour not playing him. Imagine he had played and was as poor as the rest.

Those who discount the impact of the surface either have not played on such or forget the difference it can make to how confident a player feels on the ball. I remember in my long gone playing days the difference from playing on grass as opposed to ash made.

More time on the ball, more accuracy in the passing etc.

If you take Tierney as an example he was our best player last season. Last night he was tentative only putting in one cross from which Cifci nearly scored. He also like Janko did not bomb forward as often which must have been an instruction given how much that strategy cost us v Molde.

The other thing is labeling. I thought Ciftci had a positive 10 minutes, more positive than I’ve seen before but because it’s Ciftci he gets no credit.

Sure mid field was pedestrian and I shook my head at the number of times we played the ball back from wide positions but the centre was cluttered and again how many goals have we lost when losing the ball going forward leaving defence exposed? There were a couple of occasions when we tried one twos at edge of their box and they did not come off but we were not exposed as a result.

If BR did watch our games from last season he must have seen how other clubs killed us off although not recognising playing Effe becomes a sacking offence needs explaining. Who else was available?

Finally there is our arrogance. Are Iceland not an example of where a country with a small population can compete with the best? There is no such thing as an easy game at the professional level and the days of drubbing the opposition are over.

Economics take Celtic out of the CL tier of European football and that is a fact.

We can of course become like the Icelanders in terms of making ourselves hard to beat and feeling triumphant when we match but eventually lose to clubs with greater resources.

We are a long way from that and I’d be looking closely at the type of player Iceland have and start recruiting that type not for resale value but making us a lot tougher physically and mentally than we currently are.

  34. BCW

Have to agree, i thought we would be watching a BR team with 3-4 new signings by now.

One of the ironies of last night that was lost on many of us was that Lincoln Red Imps are so called because their owner/previous owner was a Lincoln City fan. One of Celtic’s biggest critics last night was Chris Sutton who of course had his one and only venture into management as manager of Lincoln City (at least I think it was). It’s a pity that the guy wasn’t interviewed and asked how he rated Chris as a manager.

Having said all that, I agreed with just about everything Chris Sutton had to say. So I don’t know what my post is exactly meant to say and on top of that I’m not feeling well at all today and think I might go and have a lie down.
