Short-term fix for staple Euro strategy

985

There’s always a bit of reticence signing a player who has been away from his previous club for four months. Carlton Cole hasn’t played since starting West Ham’s final games of last season, and presumably has only trained in isolation since then.

Expectations of a quick return, should Celtic offer him a contract, have to be tempered with the realisation that he’ll be at least a month away from full fitness, but by then we will be set to face Molde away.

One aspect of our play that will concern Ronny Deila is that we’re short of attacking variation. The high ball forward to Samaras, so long our staple on the road in Europe, is not an option. This will be the reason why Carlton is training at Lennoxtown this week.

I’d expect a short-term deal to be concluded between now and January, to give both sides a chance to check out the fit.

  1. My friends in Celtic,

While I can see the merits of having Carlton Cole, I just thought the days of declining players looking for a last pay day were gone from the Parkhead thinking.

Am I right in thinking that if Cole signs with us now, he would be ineligible for Europa League games? I agree with Paul, in that signing Cole would give us many more variables to our forward play. But if he is only eligible for domestic games, do we really need him?

Would really appreciate it if anyone can give a definitive answer on Euro availability if he signed.

  3. well done Tet :-)

    CRC last night re Morton.

i hope we dont have another night like that,i get the impression if we were still playin Morton it would still be 1-0,one of them nights.Thats fitba i suppose :-)

  4. Cole would not be eligible for Europe. Though presumably we could register him for Europe in January if we are still in then

  5. Carlton Cole?

sorry, when I hear his name I get a mental picture of a house, e.g. ” the Carlton Cole, our new 4 bedroom detached, exclusive design villa”

Don’t get me started on profiteroles or fondues, either.

  6. Hunderbirds,

I don’t know for sure but I’d say he couldn’t play in Europe. Guidetti was signed hours after deadline and couldnt play.

As far as ‘do we really need him?’ I’d say yes.

Maybe not him but a 3rd striker is essential Imo

  7. Carlton Cole confuses me big time.

We have needed a few older heads for some time, ones who could do a job for us, a CB and a proper middy, yet we don’t bother, and it looks like CC will join, can’t play in europe, doesn’t score many goals, will cost a fortune, something no right with this.

  8. We need more firepower for the league & if Cole is fit & hungry he’ll score for fun. A short term deal makes sense but if he works out I hope it’s extended immiediatley as he might just be the difference for CPL qualification. Welcome Big Man!

Was great to see the team play so well on Sunday and the mood in the camp more positive.

We all wanted a back-up striker

Carlton Cole was a one goal in 5 games striker at Hammers, playing 250 games in 10 seasons

Not available for Europe and unlikely to be fit for domestic games until November

Seems like a last chance throw, but It might just work…

Would like to know who planned this sop!?

  10. Looks a lot like Che Guevara on

Whats not to like? He is different to what we have. He gives us another option, he does have quality, he will do well in the SPL. He has obviously been costed out and fits the budget.

I seem to remember from MON time that we tried to sign Carlton Cole then, is that correct, or am i old and havering?????

  11. No played in Europe.

    No been to Scotland.

    No fit.

    No eligible for Europe.

    No played for 4 months.

No noted for scoring goals on a regular basis.

    No employed.

    Carlton Cole?

    NO!

  12. Geordie..,

Oh good he’ll bring a steadying influence with all his European experience eh almost as much as Stuart Armstrong has he

  13. Cole was on a 30kpw contract which expired in 2014 and signed a 18month extension.

I’d be surprised if he was being offered over 18k.

    who knows…he might not impress.

I’ll wait and see how this pans out :)

  14. Canamalar,

I’m saying nowt much about him. just keeping ye right ;)

  15. According to Spiers we are wasting our time with Carlton Cole – he washed up.

According to the same SMSM so were all of the following

Sutton, Larsson, Hartson, Thompson, Moravcik. Some group.

Most of us don’t know what CC can do – only that he was at Chelsea and West Ham and played for England.

The game in Scotland is robust and perhaps that is why he is needed.

As Ronny said “I think he is a very good football player. He has shown in the Premier League and in the Championship that he can score goals. He is different from what we have.”

    Option B CSC

  16. Carlton Cole – rumoured to be good in the dressing room and good with the younger players. At his age he might be starting to think about his badges.

If he’s on a pay-per-play while doing his coaching badges that might be mutually beneficial to everybody.

Otherwise it strikes me as odd.

  17. Geordie

Do we pay him £18k per week from the off?

Or do we wait until he’s fit and playing?

I don’t like the feel of this one.

He say’s he’s had offers from the Sates.

He doesn’t say if he’s had offers from any league in England or anywhere else.

    Worrying.
