Short-term fix for staple Euro strategy

985

There’s always a bit of reticence signing a player who has been away from his previous club for four months. Carlton Cole hasn’t played since starting West Ham’s final games of last season, and presumably has only trained in isolation since then.

Expectations of a quick return, should Celtic offer him a contract, have to be tempered with the realisation that he’ll be at least a month away from full fitness, but by then we will be set to face Molde away.

One aspect of our play that will concern Ronny Deila is that we’re short of attacking variation. The high ball forward to Samaras, so long our staple on the road in Europe, is not an option. This will be the reason why Carlton is training at Lennoxtown this week.

I’d expect a short-term deal to be concluded between now and January, to give both sides a chance to check out the fit.

  1. I’m happy to leave it to the club to check out whether they think Carton Cole would be a good fit or not. Bit surprised they’ve left it this long to find some cover though. Guessing they’ve had some options they’ve been working through.

  2. philbhoy,

    whoa there tiger.

I’m just guessing a ceiling for his wage. I could be miles out.

As I said, He’s still to impress.

I personally don’t give one what he’s paid. Sellic take my money and they can dish it out as they see fit. Always have done. Always will do.

  3. The Warbmiester wants to win the league cup for the Rangers (Sevco) fans, well fak me there’s a revelation, and here was me thinking he was doing us a turn, honestly some of the headlines are off the frigin reader.

  4. Carlton Cole time will tell if he is a good signing,if it goes ahead. However are we going to pay him more than we offered Sammi.Another balls up by PL.

  5. Philbhoy,

  7. He’s older than Sammy and nowhere near as effective in front of goal.

Sammy scored 52 in 155 appearances for us and was a standout in Europe.

  8. Have to say, Celtic DO play better when Kris Commons plays, no doubt about that. The guy is by far the nearest thing we have to a midfielder with vision. Pleased with Rogic also, he’s playing very well and just maybe, eh!!!!

Nir must get a new contract , he’s superb.

Carlton Cole has pedigree, but the big question is he hungry or not.

    That’s it

  9. Hi Paul67,

We are seriously looking at Carlton Cole, it’s got a Dion Dublin feel about it – that’s got to be a good thing.

A turbulent month started for us with an away draw to Kilmarnock on the 12 August and I hope ended with an away loss at Pittodrie on the 12 September.

Now we could have done with an experienced quality professional through that time, so although we’ve turned a corner we still need that stability.

Added to that our dearth of attacking options as you say, a ban, an injury a loss of form or any combo and we could be in serious trouble up front.

Carlton Cole is a sound choice, hope he joins us.

    Hail Hail

  10. Carlton Cole?

    Na fanks.

Hope the appeasment attempt fails, Ronny sees him for what he is and sends him packing. An appeasment from above. Woo Wooo Woo. Piss of PL!

A goal scoring striker was required prior to CL qualifying. But na. An appeasment non golascoring striker for after qualifiers who can only play in the SPHELL!

    Na. Na. and treble Na.

Why did We Not just go for Sammi.. He would have Walked to Parkhead to Sign and would have Fitted right in straight away..

Has it Took Ronny 16 Months to Realise what everybody else Knew..

  12. Think we are living in a new era of football where a forwards main job is not about scoring goals himself but to facilitate others to score

  13. KINGLUBO on 22nd September 2015 12:25

Agree regarding Commons. He is influential not just in what he does but his presence on the pitch gives his team mates a lift. Also I think opposition teams really rate him and that frees up space for other players.

  14. Sammi took a lot of abuse from our own fans. Would it get any better now he is older and probably slower.

As a fan of his I hope he only returns for Legends matches knowing when he was here he gave his all.

  15. “He’s older than Sammy and nowhere near as effective in front of goal.”

    bawsman,

it’s a bit apples and oranges though isn’t it.

The only problem is – when will Kris turn up to play and when will he turn up to have the occasional jog and just shoot every time he gets the ball?

He is blatantly flippant in both mannerism on the pitch and comments off the pitch when it comes to domestic football.

He clearly doesnt believe he needs to bring his A-Game with him every time he turns up.

    Thats the problem.

  17. West End of East End on

Maybe Sammi thought about his last few games when he was booed on as a sub and thought, nah don’t want anymore of that…..

  18. Afternoon great result on Sunday and things looking a bit better all round. The press picking up on Leigh Griffiths not high fiving a ball boy to be proven to be absolutely lying about it by the man himself, lazy journalism.

And we’re still listening to their views of Carlton Cole, think I’ll give the guy a chance to see what he can do for us.

I think my spider senses are telling me he will do the business.

    Ayrshire is Green and White

  19. At least Nadir Ciftci got to play in Europe before he was internet savaged by the sausages.

Unsigned Carlton Cole has a better EPL strike rate that Gary Hooper, and besides he still got to pass the Celtic

    trial.

Not one single striking prospect at Celtic, well that’s another story, that was already out there.

Accomplished big EPL player, with 7 caps for England. But 31, not the RD philosophy fit, i’ve been led to believe for the past year. and he’ll be looking for top bucks. 15k p/wk and above?

There is, out there wandering with his heart not in it, a proven European talent who’s excelled on the world stage who’d crawl over broken wedding crockery to play for us again for the same decent wages I’d presume cole will be seeking.

Cole is a decent player. We have been shouting out for experience and physical presence up front.

Two-footed, good in the air, good attitude. On a pay-per-play it’s very little risk.
