Short-term fix for staple Euro strategy

985

There’s always a bit of reticence signing a player who has been away from his previous club for four months. Carlton Cole hasn’t played since starting West Ham’s final games of last season, and presumably has only trained in isolation since then.

Expectations of a quick return, should Celtic offer him a contract, have to be tempered with the realisation that he’ll be at least a month away from full fitness, but by then we will be set to face Molde away.

One aspect of our play that will concern Ronny Deila is that we’re short of attacking variation. The high ball forward to Samaras, so long our staple on the road in Europe, is not an option. This will be the reason why Carlton is training at Lennoxtown this week.

I’d expect a short-term deal to be concluded between now and January, to give both sides a chance to check out the fit.

    No problem,mate.

Such a kind offer deserved a repost.

I hope it was noticed by the intended recipient. It would make my day if he turned up.

I think you’ll find that this isn’t a trat of just Celtic fans. It’s the internet and a Celtic blog, of course people are going to say if they think signing Cole is a good idea and speculate as to his value. Personally I wouldn’t mind him signing as he is a bit different to what we’ve got but I’m a Stokes fan and rather he got a chance, domestically at least. I thought when he had a run of games he developed a really good relationship with Izzy on the left. His absence might even have something to do with Izzy’s (exaggerated IMO) wee dip.

Less of the crime show puns! Minder and Heartbeat. Your showing your age.

Do you not think then that we need to stop calling guys who are not strikers strikers unless they are on strike?

And can he stoned mark at corners?

Yeah I get that, but what gets my goat……..is when these opinions are created based on sweet FA but it manifests at Parkhead………..

It gets to the players. I’ll give you two examples Samaras was hounded for long periods. I can remember arguing with some clown when Samaras slipped on a frozen pitch and was immediately seized on……….for slipping.

I also can’t fathom why some Celtic supporters disliked NFL. My opinion, spurious perhaps, was that too many of the fuds read the Record etc and formulated their opinions based on the slow drip of poison.

Big Sammi didny know the history then.

Sannies on a frosty pitch a la Big Yogi!

    :-)

  8. I can see the argument for Sammy over Cole but why is it either or? We should take them both if at all possible?

Abject failures at English Championship level like Adam Rooney, David Goodwillie & Stevie May all score goals in the SPFL. You’d imagine an effective striker who has spent a career in the English top flight coukd then do likewise for us. Strikers feed off of confidence & who knows what the possibility of hitting the back of the net on a regular basis might do for Carlton Cole? The lad has no doubt got bags of ability, it’s just a matter of if he still wants it.

Short term deal until January with an option to extend seems a no brainer to me.

Got rid of Sammi. then we fall apart in europe.

  10. Captain Beefheart on

If he isn’t available for Europe, why bother? Like Blackett and Cifci, another bizarre signing which shows inept strategy. Can’t believe I am going to type the following but here goes…

    i would rather play Stokesy.

We have an ability to recruit well but we don’t half make some strategic blunders.

  11. Carlton Cole. What’s not to like? He’s an experienced EPL player and would provide much needed competition for our other 3 front men, that in itself has to be a good thing. If we can sign him up without bustin our wage structure it a no brainer of a decision. Other than he’s not Andy Cole at his peak I cant see a downside.

  12. Beefy, I can’t believe you wrote that. Ciftci is not such a bizarre signing apart from we knew he was facing a lengthy ban. There is no doubt his introduction getting thrown into European games and banned domestically was far from ideal for both Club and player & both suffered.

I’m pretty sure that Ciftci can & will do a decent job for us in the SPFL now that he has got off the mark.

  13. I will wait to see if Carlton Cole ever has the honour to pull the famous hoops on and play for The Celtic ,before i judge him.

    till late all

Fair enough, I just don’t think that kind of opinion develops on blogs or the internet and is then transferred to the stadium. I think it’s more to do with a mob mentality when we’re not doing so well and frustration abounds. I also don’t believe it’s new, I can remember groaning and real anger during the 90s especially when we had a whole range of scapegoats to pick on. I’m an internet moaner but a real life cheerer and I’m guessing 95% of those who moan on here are the same.

Good luck Carlton Cole. I wish you every luck.

As for the lack of foresight of a board who had all summer, and the whole world from which to unearth a promising striker, but instead, with the bleak wintery tundra of a second long Zadok-the-Priest-free season stretching before us, offer us up a free-agent in late September.

Your actions over the summer are: Unambitious. Amateur. Embarrassing. Insulting.

  18. I am guesing the one’s who are saying give stoksie a chance are not regular visitors to Celtic park.

Watch him in the warm ups before the game starts and watch him hitting shots at the keeper warming up, the reason the big safety nets behind the goals to stop the fans getting hit in the face by stray balls are his fault.

  19. Hunderbirds are Gone on

I think the Internet has replaced ramblings in our own heads that we always had, but could/would not share. The Internet has brought a global audience to the inside of people’s heads.

These thoughts never saw the light of day in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s except in wee small hours sessions with like minded souls. Negative thoughts were there, but only positives were voiced at the games. Apart from the odd “ach Rogan” :-)))

  20. There is no argument for Sammy in my opinion, Cole signs he signs, he doesent we move on, he does we see how it goes, he does well, it’s a good punt, he doesent, he moves on, no matter what Sammys gone ffs, deal with it, and the……….we loss Sammy we fall apart in Europe?……..ffs keep it real ,.
