Show Your Hand

1036

When I grew up everyone knew about Thalidomide, a drug given to prevent morning sickness in expectant mothers, which caused severe limb abnormalities in the child.  The drug was used for only a short period, so those suffering from the condition are all of a certain age.

The condition is both very recognisable and rare, so there is a good chance you will have noticed Gerry Cleary (above) at a Celtic game at some point.  When I was a boy I saw him at Love St and heard about the scandal later that night from my (animated) mother. There was a fresh news story only yesterday, detailing the history of one uncompensated victim.

Gerry is part of a campaign by Thalidomide sufferers to raise awareness of the condition and put pressure on the drug’s developer, Chemie Grunenthal, to compensate UK victims.  On this occasion, you are not being asked to put your hands in your pockets, you’re being asked to register your support of the Show Your Hand campaign.

Gerry explains the campaign below:

“My name is Gerry Cleary, I am a 51 year old Celtic supporter from East Kilbride who was born with a condition called Thalidomide caused by a so called wonder drug manufactured by a German pharmaceutical company, Chemie Grunenthal.

“There is currently a major awareness campaign underway to put pressure on this company to face up to their responsibilities, finally apologise and compensate all thalidomers affected by their actions over 50 years ago.

“I know being a hoops fan all my life and following the team all over Europe our club is open to all and our fans second to none, and all I ask is the Celtic family to show their support by logging on to our campaign website www.showyourhand.org which enables you to register your support.  It also details the history of the biggest pharmaceutical disaster in modern times and is both enlightening and informative.

“I look forward to your support.

Hail Hail !!!”

I know we can’t all afford to participate in the many needy causes we feature regularly here but we can all support this campaign, as can the club, I am sure.

The Sunday Times has a section in which people tell their tales.

One guy told about his first holiday with his wife and young child in an hotel in Spain. Due to tiredness which overcomes parents, he and his wife had not been as amorous as before and he was looking forward to the holiday to rectify the state of affairs.

First evening, they set up the baby listening alarm and went to the bar for a quiet drink. When they got back to the room, the wife was till too tired and said that, tomorrow she would feel better, so nothing happened that night.

So, the next day, the baby was put into the toddler club and he and the wife went back to the room and relaxed and caught up for a lot of lost time.

When the guy went to get the toddler, he was welcomed by shouts of “Bravissimo, Bravissimo” and the waiters pointed to the baby listener still siting on the table.

  7. Canamalar,

What your doing is remarkable.I’ve followed your idea of presenting the board with this since the very start.

It has now gathered pace and has in turn made the board, the smsm etc sit up and take real notice.you now say theyve used the supporting statement rather than the original undiluted one.

    Keep going mate.

  8. …green hand added, but why doesn’t it accept international locations… many have moved on from these shores!

  9. By the way as another poster has suggested it would be a good idea to post both the original and then the supporting statement, which we know gives them alot of wriggle room.

    Theyre silence is deafening!!

    Mick11,

To keep it simple this was the resolution

This AGM requests the Board exercise the provision contained in the Procedural Rules Governing the UEFA Club Financial Control Body Article 10 with jurisdiction and investigation responsibilities identified in articles 3 & 11 (Note 1), by referring/bringing to the attention of the UEFA Club Financial Control Body (CFCB), the licensing administration practices of the Scottish Football Association (SFA), requesting the CFCB undertake a review and investigate the SFA’s implementation of UEFA & SFA license compliance requirements, with regard to qualification, administration and granting of licenses to compete in football competitions under both SFA and UEFA jurisdiction, since the implementation of the Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play Regulations of 2010.

The rest was the supporting statement, the above is whats missing from the prospectus published version.

It might not matter but it is certainly pertinent.

Like I asked last night LNS panel was privy to all the main lobbying parties involved in this. They executed a pre agreed plan. They did not devise this plan. They executed.

    Who devised the plan ?

No answers and that means we devised the plan or were certainly party to it.

    Hence the screaming silence.

You seem to be saying the following is missing from the AGM pack:

“This AGM requests the Board exercise the provision contained in the Procedural Rules Governing the UEFA Club Financial Control Body Article 10 with jurisdiction and investigation responsibilities identified in articles 3 & 11 (Note 1), by referring/bringing to the attention of the UEFA Club Financial Control Body (CFCB), the licensing administration practices of the Scottish Football Association (SFA), requesting the CFCB undertake a review and investigate the SFA’s implementation of UEFA & SFA license compliance requirements, with regard to qualification, administration and granting of licenses to compete in football competitions under both SFA and UEFA jurisdiction, since the implementation of the Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play Regulations of 2010.”

It’s not missing from the pack I received. It is on page 2 under Shareholder Requisition.

    Do you have something different?

  26. canamalar,

No apologies required from you at all.

You can hold your head high on this whatever the outcome.

A couple of thoughts. What do you think.

The following questions should be put to the board either at the agm or before.

1.If,as has been claimed, all avenues to question the 2011 UEFA licence have been exhausted, can you confirm you referred the matter to the CFCB,when you did so and what was their response?

2.If you did not refer it to the CFCB then all avenues have NOT been exhausted and we would urge you to vote in favour of the resolution

May not be the ideal wording but you get my drift.

When we dispense with all the smoke and mirrors, wind and pish and get right down to it is that not what this is all about?

  27. canamalar prays Oscar can do it again on

I must admit, on this subject I have been looking at every rag and meeja outlet thats published it and none have actually published the resolution, they have all went with the supporting statement, who says the meeja dont influence and I thought I was a wee bit cuter than that, just goes to show eh.

I have love reading the hoards rants on the comments sections that somehow the resolution is aimed at them, especially when the examples used are about a club that dont exist anymore or soon wont when the liquidation process is complete.
