Showboat Sunday, Gallus Callum, unplayable Celtic

404

I know you are as delighted as I am for Callum McGregor.  He has matured into a very talented central midfield player.  One of our most composed on the ball, his first touch creates space and opens up play.

His 11th minute goal pure gallus, to use the local vernacular.  Moussa Dembele did well with his first touch and lay-off into the hole, or to be more precise, the midfield chasm.  McGregor sold the Newco defence a ticket to the movies for the afternoon, rolling the ball with the inside of his football, like a carpet bowl, past the cinema contemplating Fotheringham in goal.

Long before this, Celtic imposed their will on the game.  As we broke forward, television pictures showed possession stats for the match until that point; Celtic had 85% of the ball.  It didn’t stop then, either.  Celtic continued to pass and move, dragging hapless shadows in their wake.

I’m going to be flippant about a non-flippant subject, for a moment.

“Right, Leigh, you’re on.  Get your trackie off, go to the toilet.  We’re out of milk, and you know what Broonie’s like if he doesn’t get his halftime tea, so you better nip to the shop on Aitkenhead Road before you put your top on.  And Leigh, bring your lanyard to get back in.  Then you can replace Moussa, he’s pulled his hamstring.”

It took Leigh Griffiths 3:17 mins to appear in the technical area after Moussa gave the substitution sign to the bench.  I don’t know what was going on, but is an unacceptable delay.

We had possession a few times after Leigh pitched up, but it was a further 3:38 before the ball went out of play, and we were able to compete with 11 men again.  Running aimlessly infield with a man waiting to join play offers considerably less utility than knocking it long into touch.

By the time Dembele retired after 26 minutes Newco were punch drunk.  Allowing them to play against 10 men for 7:05 mins gave them a breather.  They were able to pass the ball for the first time in the match, recharge batteries and get forward.  They were unable to do anything with that possession, but Celtic had spent 7 minutes chasing and were not quite as dominant thereafter.

Halliday’s scissor-kick on Patrick Roberts after 3 mins would have resulted in a red card on many other occasions.  Scott Brown must consider his suspension appeal stands an excellent chance, if this is the bar.

That wasn’t the end of the treatment dished out to Patrick.  Beerman was cautioned for another challenge would could have resulted in more severe action, but the Newco player followed this with a cynical trip on Roberts two minutes later.  It should have been a second yellow.  Roberts had their number and there was nothing within the rules they could do about it.

The penalty, early in the second half, was a battle between Celtic’s pacey striker, Leigh Griffiths, and Newco’s pacey defender, Tavernier.  The latter was schooled by the former.  Why Tavernier lunged in so carelessly inside the box will be one of the items on their new manager’s “What’s going on?” list.  Griffiths is a huge resource to have on the bench waiting for his chance.  He’ll be counting the minutes until Saturday comes.

We were so much on top the temptation to showboat looked irresistible.  Lustig, Boyata and Simunovic all ran out of position with the ball when straightforward options were available.  As a consequence of this, and similar endeavours, play was more balanced in the final 20 minutes.

When you are so far ahead, there is a temptation to take an extra touch, but that extra touch undermined the system.  The Celtic team is not filled with supermen, instead they have a hugely effective system.  Stick to the system and we’ll look like supermen, go off piste and it will all get a bit indulgent looking.  When we were at our Fabulous Best, we did the simple things very accurately and very quickly until the final third, where we were quicker still, and even more accurate.  While we practiced this plan, we were unplayable.

Both teams should improve for the rematch in five days’ time.  Newco, surely, cannot be any worse, but Celtic can make more of their dominance.

Raffle for Ibrox Tickets

Do you have a ticket for Ibrox on Saturday?  Me neither, but Celtic sponsor, Intelligent Car Leasing, have again given us two tickets to raffle for Mary’s Meals.  To win, make a minimum donation of £5 here, then the email confirmation you receive to me, celticquicknews@gmail.com with the word “Pedro” in the subject line.  Make sure you enclose sufficient contact details, we don’t have a lot of time to arrange ticket collection.

The competition closes tomorrow at 23:00, so entries will be few.  I think we’re going to enjoy Saturday, so get in there.

  4. Possible Irony of the FANTASTIC KIND ?

When Halliday launched himself into that vicious assault on Wee Paddy, ( and how the Hun Hordes loved it)….Little did they know that assault MAY YET play a major part in Scott Brown’s Appeal, which if successful in part due to Halliday’s GBH, and Broonys red card is reduced to yellow from the Ross County fiasco, then Scott Brown our Captain would be able to play in this game v THEM on Saturday ?

For the moment, I speculate obviously…………….but SHOULD Halliday’s assault be shown and accepted at Broony’s Appeal as a ” Distinct lack of consistency by the MIB etc ! Then it would be a sensational own goal ( Yet Again) from THEM, and of course their thick, dense Hun Hordes who cheered loudly when Halliday committed his heinous assault ( you and I would have spent a night in the cells for that), not realising that the actions of own of their own MIGHT STILL contribute in to helping Scott Brown’s win his Appeal ?

As I say…all speculation on my part …for the moment, but may I also add that if Halliday’s assault DOES in fact, form any part of a possible successful Broony’s Appeal, then the Hun Hordes can only blame Halliday….one of their own ( Thank god).

If successful and Broony plays on Saturday, Celtic win…and Broony yet again plays his part……those Huns will have yet again scored a fabulous own goal yet again….they just can’t help THEM selves ?

Superbly Funny Irony…the biggest backfire of the entire season !

Celtic and Scott Brown COULD possibly set a new Predecent this week if successful etc, for future major inconsistencies from the MIB ?

If there’s any justice of course ?

  6. From the Scotsman, WTF?

    —–

The greatest possible end seems certain to elude Roberts, though. He proved an integral member of the England under-20 squad that last month qualified for the World Cup finals that will take place in South Korea next month. Starting in the middle of May, England are scheduled to play their third and final group game against the hosts on 26 May – the day before Celtic will meet Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup final that is the one more victory they require to complete the club’s first domestic clean sweep since 2000.The fact the Roberts is forever circumspect when asked about the scheduling clash tells its own story about where he sees himself in Scottish Cup final week – on the other side of the planet as a, by then, former Celtic player who received a good grounding before hoping for a crack at the highest level of the English game with parent club Manchester City.“I can’t really say too much about that at the moment. We just have to see what happens. All I know is that it’s not up to me,” said Roberts, Celtic being obliged to release the player to the England FA for the Fifa tournament. “I can’t really say anything more. I’m just glad that Celtic are in the final.”

  10. I had a blether yesterday with the father of a young man who plays for Celtic’s first team, whilst he was working in my house. Some interesting snippets of information regards all things Celtic.

He reckons that Celtic are trying desperately to keep Patrick Roberts, have already signed a blue chip striker for next season and are looking at other wingers as well.

Rodgers is a revelation compared to Deila and the Rangers players hate their new gaffer as they get one day off a week and will get one week off in the summer.

Sunderland apparently made a significant bid for Griffiths in the transfer window which Rodgers refused.

Nice fella who did a “grand old ” job as well, some other stuff which couldn’t be shared on here but interesting gossip nevertheless.

  11. Joe Filippis Haircut on

Good Morning Bhoys from a dry at the minute Central Scotland well Paddy Roberts has shown both the good side and the bad side of loan players. There is no doubt that the player has had some great games for us this season and looks like a future full Internationalist but it is very very unlikely that he will be with Celtic. That leaves us with the problem of finding a replacement for next season while Man City will have the benefit of a much better player than the one who joined us at the beginning of the season. There in lies the debate to have loan players or not to have loan players ? my own view is we should only take a player on loan if there is an option to buy at the end of the loan period. As we are unlikely to see much more of Patrick in the hoops I will thank him now for his efforts and wish the lad all the very best for the future. H.H.

If you think about it… progress through the England ranks probably adds more value than a Scottish Cup medal.

He’s already beaten Aberdeen several times over in his time here. An international tournament is not to be sniffed at.

  16. I would be amazed if Roberts isn’t in the match day squad on Scottish Cup Final Day. I would expect Brendan to reach a compromise with the English FA. Paddy will join up with them afterwards for the knockout stages. It’s the 50th anniversary week after of Lisbon and we’ve a shot at the Treble. With Moussa likely to miss out we need Paddy available.
