Shredded by Motherwell, rumour mill flight of fancy

251

For those who weren’t there yesterday, Motherwell could have had five in the second half. Twice they were clean through with Craig Gordon to beat, but couldn’t, and on another occasion Craig was stranded off his line during a penalty box scramble which could have ended either way.

By contrast, Celtic were anaemic. We struggled to open a packed Motherwell defence –Nir Bitton’s deflected goal was a consequence of Motherwell having so many players to in front of their keeper.

Motherwell did well, Scott McDonald in particular, but they were repeatedly given the Freedom of Celtic Park. It goes without saying but we need to tighten up. A new system is required, one which will protect the defence.  At the risk of sounding like the proverbial broken record, we need a defensive mid.  Anyone can open us up without someone standing guard.

You know the rumour mill is doing its thing when you receive 15 texts on the same subject. Ronny is not about to leave Celtic.

Last few hours to order from CQN Bookstore before Christmas, orders accepted until 16:00 Monday!

  1. One Central defensive midfielder won’t fix the problem despite what Ronny is telling Lawell. Especially if that centre mid is John Souttar.

Good player but not a first team starter every week. Anyone still backing Deila is living a lie.

After we signed Ciftci we were informed that he was our number 1 target.

Would love to know who is January No1 target?

  3. Green Pinata,

Re your query about RD remaining in a different role.

After sorting out the menu at Lennoxtown perhaps he could do something at Celtic Park for match days on the catering side ?

  4. ElDiegoBhoy-I have been nothing but civil to you on this blog, as I posted it’s all about opinions. I’ll give you another one, scroll by in future.

  5. I am NOT hun, couldn’t be!!!!

I CAN see underlying symptoms before the illness takes hold – why always wait for a Mowbray/Barnes moment?

It is NOT judging on Euro results – rather it is an obvious lack of progress and repetition of the same lack of tactical nous with increasing regularity.

If we could get WGS for seven months, at least we would have a leader in the dugout – at present we have neither, on, or, off, the park.

Ronny’s comments are now desperate and defensive and to use the words of Rod, he appears “out of his depth” – sad but true.

    Exiled

Presumably Billionaire Desmond hasn’t got to where he is by not getting it right when he needs to. He clearly gives Lawwell enormous autonomy ( and rewards)… And in the macro picture of Scotland Lawwell is delivering. We are the undisputed top team in the Country. However Desmond wants entry to bigger ticket events. Given EPL is becoming an increasingly remote fantasy – EUROPE is an obvious consolation.

I’m hopeful ( based only on intuition) that Desmond will act – hopefully psychopathically and lay down an absolute instruction.

Lawwell can justify his salary when we are making millions and all is going well on the park. Becomes more difficult when the team is underperformance and we are making a financial loss.

  7. Celtic Won the European Cup with 11 local boys in the team.

    Unbelievable.

    And always worth repeating.

Wish I’d been alive to see it.

5 years before I saw the light of morning….

    Hail hail King Billy McNeill

  8. was at the game yesterday & when I saw the formation, I thought “here we go again”

Forrest out wide on the left, Commons out on the right, McGregor in the middle. Why?

We play this 4-5-1 system & the problem the management team have, is that they continue with the same formation regardless of the players available.

Scott Brown is a big miss when we set up like that. We have no-one else to fill his role.

With the positions Forrest & Commons started, I think it’s too easy to see what they are going to do.

At present, we are too easy a team to read. No-body moves from their set position & we make it easier for the opposition to change their play according to the way we set up. We don’t give opposing teams something to think about, for example after 20-30 mins get Commons & Forrest to swap sides It’s amateurish. So much of our play was congested, with Biton, McGregor & Rogic at times getting in each other’s way. I’ve also no idea what position Cifti’s supposed to be playing!!

    There is no plan B.

What some will say is a plan B, actually turns out to be different players being adopted into the same system.

We seem to make the game so difficult, especially when it comes to left midfield. I’ve watched Armstrong go into a shell, he looks so uncomfortable in that role & now it appears we’re going to try Scott Allan in the same position.

For me, you put the players in the position their most accustomed to. If we are to persist with this 4-5-1, would there be any harm in putting Johansson in the left sided role? Naturally left sided & if he can do nothing else at present he’s a good engine & can bomb up & down that side.

For me, at home it must be 2 people up front. Give SPFL opposition something to think about.

I’ve also NEVER seen a team give away so many chances to the opposition when it’s OUR corner!!

Our defending is rank rotten (young Tierney excepted).

I was at the game with my 10 year old daughter & she wanted to go with about 15 minutes left.

“youse never ken darling, a wee late rally & the points could be in the bag”

“but Dad, there never going to score”………………..wish I’d listened!!!

For me, it’s taxi for RD & JC time

  9. Eddieinkirkmichael, from previous blog ( apologies for delay, had to nip oot)

Now Eddie, we do not have a limited budget

We are spending over £35 million pounds on our football operation, in Scottish terms that’s absolutely huge

Now how we are spending that is a problem, and needs looked at

With regards the team, and what I would change

I wouldn’t be playing Armstrong, Allan or Forrest wide left

I wouldn’t be playing McGregor in holding midfield role or Commons wide right

Why not play Armstrong with Biton as midfield 2

Play Commons or Allan in middle of next 3 ? Even McGregor in there

Play Forrest on right and McGregor or GMS on left, I would even play Stokes out there, ( he did well there last season)

Bottom line play players in natural positions

I believe there in lies a major fault with Ronny

Ii would love his vision to succeed, but do not believe he can deliver on his vision

    Hail Hail and Nytol

Agree with a lot of what you say but you can’t play two up front if you only have one striker worthy of the name. And when he is injured you have nothing up front as yesterday proved.

I hope the manager is studying how the likes of Leicester and Watford are punching above their weight playing the high tempo pressing game he talks about, but we rarely see, and they do it with a good old fashion 4-4-2.

  11. Weeandybhoy

I must have been typing as you posted, never seen it, but o obviously agree :-)

One other thing, I would also have Rogic stepping back one position in midfield, so the holding 2 with Brown out is between Biton, Armstrong and Rogic

    Oh and another

We desperately need some pace in our team

    Definately off Ooot :-)

May 1967 – 3 great events happened in my beloved dad’s life. We know what happened in Lisbon- less than a week later Inwas born on the same night Rangers lost the euro Cup winners cup. My dad often joked with me which one of those 3 events gave him the most pleasure. He took the scret to the grave with him. … But I know. Incidentally he would have still loved to see Big Billy’s statue unveiled on Saturday and he and I were as close as anything…

Don’t think it’s your night pal.

You’ve missed an S with the guy you told to take a hike. I thought his post was appropriate.

    All about opinions.

    Greenpinata.

Our minds think alike. Not about to leave Celtic, just might be being clever with words.

Bottom line is our manager is under performing , ditto the players.

Missing Brown and Griffiths is a cop out.

Rigid formation with square pegs for round holes.

What exactly brings Dermot back to Glasgow ?

    Hope his Sat Nav works.

  14. Anyone think Ronny may benefit from a proper director of football?

I’d be much happier with him remaining as manager if he had a more experienced football man to take direction from. His wages are around £400K, which is not much for a manager of Celtic, so surely there’s room to pay someone to oversee & for Ronny to learn from?

Could WGS or MON do this job along side managing their national teams? I don’t see why not?

  15. Cults

I was born shortly after King Billy’s winner against Dunfermline in 1965 cup final.

My sister was born shortly after Lisbon 1967. I know they were four huge events in my late father’s life. I will never know the most important though? :)

    I’m sure you made top 3… ;-)

  17. There was an interesting stat from EPL commentator that Leicester have only had more possession than opponents in one game.

Have said until coaches learn the difference between positive and negative zones then their systems are worthless.

Our possession stats are impressive but they produce little.

The so called chances we produced yesterday barely had the well keepers jersey dirty,

In first half he faced one long range shot that he bobbled for Ciftcis offside goal.

In the second he mostly just dealt with hopeful crosses after long periods of Celtic possession.

Our centre mids have shown no ability to make forward passes so we are left with crosses to an out manned striker or long speculative shots.

Does not look like a well coached team to me.

  18. Totally agree with Mr Brennan’s play on words Ronny certainly won’t leave Celtic however sooner or later Mr Delia,s service will be dispensed of by Celtic Plc

From top to bottom clear the lot.Lawwell a million a year..pissing on the fans.

Deila an utterly clueless manager. The fans have the answer in their hands.Stay away..

  20. A lot of rumours on one of the Facebook celtic forums that Ronnys has been sacked.if it’s true then I feel sorry for the man.for being put in charge of celtic. It’s some of them on the board and in every other departments that should be chased down Kerrydale Street.

  21. Tricoloured Ribbon on

Rest assured that if Ronny is out these charlatans in charge will go for the cheapest option available.Collins or Kennedy.

  22. Unlike some I ain’t going to be a name dropper but speaking today to an ex Celtic player who took along an other ex Celtic player yesterday who hadn’t been for a few years………worse Celtic team he has seen

  23. Tommy Boyd the darling of the happy clappers is my choice for any future vacancies for the managerial position at Celtic Park……….cheapest option as he already has the blazer and tie

  24. Place your faith in Ronny,he will take us to the promised land TAL

Support our manager don’t become like the Hun.
