Shut them up, Celtic

367

Celtic’s season will open up if they can take Dinamo Zagreb down a peg or two tonight.  The Croatian champions have read the stories about the debacle against Legia and subsequent humbling by Maribor, who turned out to be anything but humble, if their draw away to Schalke this week in the Champions League is anything to go by.

All they know about Celtic is the trauma we’ve come through in recent months.  Details, like the aforementioned under-appreciation of Maribor, or the extremely credible away performance against top seed, Salzburg in the last round, will be difficult to fit into their match planning.

Salzburg was a sign that there is more to come from this Celtic team than was previously evident, and unlike Maribor, who arrived in Glasgow aware of our potential, Dinamo confidently predicted they are “here for the win”.  Even Juventus were more cautious at Glasgow Airport.

European football gives players an opportunity to stamp their name at the club, and on subsequent team sheets, just ask Wakaso Mubarak, who put a stake in the ground 13 minutes into his debut in Salzburg, or Callum McGregor, who stamped his authority all over our European campaign already this season.  Tonight is the game Stefan Scepovic has been waiting for since arriving (without a proper preseason) on deadline day.

I’m not expecting a flowing game tonight, nor do I think such a game would be beneficial to us.  Keep it tight and exploit our chances, and we’ll shut Dinamo up.

Don’t want to get drawn off course today, but a quick point:

Remember what I detailed about Fraser Forster’s professionalism?  Ronny Deila is 100% correct on what he said on fitness recently; big Fraser was one end of a spectrum.

  1. How many honest mistakes was Tony Mowbray personally responsible for (1 – 1 – 9 aside)?

Is it a character hanging offence for a man to be stoic of emotion and refuse to believe what he sees with his own eyes, even when what he sees is disgustingly detrimental to his own health and future, whilst refusing to indulge impotent histrionics, justifiable or not, just like it appeared Tony Mowbray did?

How much did the huns spend on their squad in the Mowbray year?

How much stronger was the SPL in the Mowbray year?

    Apples with pears….

For me this is the most dysfunctional Celtic team I have ever watched; that includes Tony Mowbray’s, Lou Macari’s, John Barnes, Liam Brady’s teams, regardless of whether the bland statistics support my opinion or not.

Actually I wonder if the statistics do support my opinion.

I praying and hoping for a Celtic win tonight.

Celtic are at home, we should be going gung ho and let them worry about us, we are Celtic, attack attack attack. The best form of defence is , Attack. Simple. My formation would be 1 – 9 !!

In order to win the game we must be able to control it.

Are we good enough to line up our team regardless of the opposition to the extent they will pick their team based on countering our strengths?

    No.

Are we poor enough to pick our team and formation based on countering the oppositions strengths?

    No.

what we must do however, is find the balance of the where the measure is in between.

Had we taken the above in to account I think we would have beaten Salzburg, considering they had the majority of possession in areas of the park they outnumbered us.

Another example of when we didnt do this was the return Maribor game, when we lined up with 3 in the middle of the park which incidentally was one of Johansons worst games for us.

The single example of when we did seem to do this was the away Maribor game when we lined up with 3 in the middle and Johanson had his best game having that licence to go beyond (he has the energy)

We need to get the balance right specific to the threats we face and the arsenal we have within our weaponry – if that means ordinarily best players have to start this one on the bench so be it.

I dont know the answer to the above because I have no idea what Dynamo Zagreb are like.

I hope those who have scouted them do.

Yet again Ronny D has a pop at Neil Lennon. What is this guy on? For God sake just get on with ur own job that might i say uv still to convince me and a few other Celtic fans ur the right one. Wrong result tonight and ur off imo!!

  8. We should give Ronnie D a minimum of two seasons before judging him.

This is a long haul rebuild and culture change we’re undertaking.

RD should be given a season to deliver the championship. Anything less is failure.

The players must learn how to treat their bodies. They are well paid for the honour of representing Celtic FC

Tony Mowbray did not cause the honest mistakes. That much is obvious to both of us.

However, his ultra-stoicism did contribute to his downfall. His sense of fair play and never complaining about the refs did lead to his being taken advantage of by match officials.

I would contrast, the different reaction from Neil Lennon, when he called them out at considerable personal risk to himself. The first thing we noticed was that the decisions being visited upon Neil’s Celtic were less blatant and regular than they were against Tony Mowbray’s Celtic. We even got a soft penalty at Ibrox awarded to us, which McGregor saved.

We still got some dubious decisions like the Hearts Cup semi defeat but they were fewer and that was while Rangers were still alive.

I am in agreement that our performances against Legia and Maribor at home were amongst the poorest I have witnessed recently and that our league wins, United apart, have not been achieved by cohesive and convincing performances.

  17. “What about Wonga writing off 220 Milion pounds how can a company lose that amount and still stay in business ?”

Have loads more than that in the first place? ;p

  18. I have no issue with Ronny wanting players to have better diets………fine by me………I have no issue with wanting 24 hour athlete’s…….. fine by me………..possibly not 365 days a year tho ……I honestly believe players should let their hair down once in a while …..if so desired..

What I do have issue with is quite simple………………….If all that was needed on a football pitch to win matches was …….better diet…..and strict régime……… then it would be all so easy….

I presume his last team had all of these things !!!!……..and they have set alight world football ….right ??…..

I’ll give you a wee for instance…………two players going for a few fifty fifty battles over the course of a game………one of Ronnys favs……say Johansen……. fit as a fiddle….non stop covers more ground than a sheep dog rounding up fifty flocks……v ……say somebody like Neil Lennon……possibly a tad overweight….. not the quickest……….BUT……who in their right mind would not have had Lennon over Johansen as a football player in their team ???!!!!!!

These arguments are becoming more and more mind numbing by the day ………just get 11 players who can play the effing game well !!!!!!……..PLEASE….

“What have those teams you list got to do with Celtic, not investing and plain playing gash?”

I don’t know the answer to the above question.

However, I do know that I posted it in reply to two posters who expressed the view that failing to make the CL group stages was a sacking offence normal in all walks of life. I posted the list of all clubs who fell at the final qualifying hurdle and whether their boards or, indeed, even one of them had been sacked as a result of this failure. I suspect that. Legia’s admin. secretary apart, nobody was sacked at a football club for this failure, any more than the Man City Board would sack themselves for failing to make it out of the group.

I am contending that a “£20m failure” would have to be more willful negligence than is evident in the cry of “they never bought the player that would guarantee qualification”.

  21. Could someone point me in the direction of the article where Ronny D claims it’s all about fitness and not about skill? Cheers.

  24. SFTB….serious question…are you optimistic about are RD and if so on what do you base that on, thatyou have seen(not heard).?

  25. Our team can be on the best diet available to them, the best fitness and training regime, they can have flying wingers, a big strong goalscoring striker, a solid defence and an inspired keeper but if we don’t have midfielders who can pass the ball to a teammate on a regular basis and can’t create chances then it all makes no difference.

Our problem is our midfield and until that is sorted then we will stutter along, inconsistent but ultimately successful domestically and also rans in Europe.

  26. Vinnie the dog

the whole fitness thing is a red herring for Ronny and his dwindling flock to hide behind

If all we needed to do, to win games was players who could run fast for miles and miles, then teams like partick thistle would simply spend all day doing laps of their local running track and within one season they would be in the Champions league

Mo Farah would be the captain of Barcelona

Maradona of course wouldn’t get a game anywhere.

The reason that the fans are so divided about RD is that so many of the Celtic fhans jumped on the bandwagon and convinced themselves that RD was some kind of undiscovered superstar who had special ways and special visions of how to play fitba. They didnt wait to see how he performed and then make a judgement. They proclaimed him as a mesiah even though they didnt know who he was, an hour earlier.

what RD needs to understand is how to put a good first team on the pitch and do it regularly. If they are fitter than their opponents then very good, but RD would do well to realise it is a million miles away from the be all and end all in the fitba world, and stop trying to build a career about it.

Tonight, if we win, it will more likely be because we were better fitba players or had a better break of the ba, or lined our side up tactically better, than anything to do with improving our ability to run a milli second faster.
