Sign players of the right profile for the right sum on the right contracts

787

Sure, we could have signed Paulo Bernardo three weeks ago, but to what end?  If you want to know what signing players on the wrong deal feels like, look at the fire sale across the city.

Celtic exist as a dominant force in Scottish football because – in general – they sign players of the right profile for the right sum on the right contracts.  Get the wrong profile, fee or contract too many times, and you are in penury.

Paulo (22) had an unusual season, featuring more heavily in Champions League games than post-break matches, where he played on 20 minutes in total.  He had a crucial role in scoring the opener in the win over Newco at Celtic Park in December, then at Ibrox in setting up Adam Idah for Celtic’s third goal.

We’ll see how often and when Brendan decided to play him this season.  Welcome back, Paulo!

Podium for old Johnny. Leggy hasn’t fell aff his chair yet. Early days though. 😁

  2. I don’t see an announcement yet for Paulo. Pity we didn’t sign him three weeks ago as he would have been able to take part in an excellent pre-season in the USA. Hopefully, a few better players are still to arrive. Just waiting on Nicholson and McKay (tic toc), as Brendan has stated.

  3. Paul do we have the right guys in the right departments doing these jobs do you believe?

  4. My Podium Post for this Thread has disappeared…very strange.

I was responding to BELMONTBRIAN in answer to his question on the Previous Thread in relation to pain killers for my back .

    Whits happening ?

Please give my best to LEGGY and BELMONT BRIAN and any others of course.

Sorry, I can NOT be in the Shippy today, but I am in some pain with my back trouble and I can hardly move.

  6. Tell me the old old story….

Well at least we know what to expect from Paulo Bernardo when or if he signs

Something we did not know when we signed Alexandro Bernebei in 2022 (reputedly an Ange singing) for a notional £3.75 mill, something we did not know when he was, thankfully rarely, on the pitch, and what we do not know in the future, a known unknown, unlike the player himself an unknown unknown, but one who apparently fitted the right profile, the right sum and the right contract….

It wouldn’t surprise me ,if they brought in a couple of players, then went into administration, specially if Elite win their case

  8. I think last season bears that out.

2 points ahead with us playing poorly and their well-paid new signings weren’t able to get them over the line. A Summer window that wasn’t able to deliver any instant improvement to the starting 11 and we still had enough to turn things around and finish very strongly.

Everyone at the club seems to be having the sort of calm Summer that the Huns can only dream of. New players like Kuhn coming onto a game while theirs aren’t fit and are training with the kids. Desperately looking for clubs to take their high earners off the wage bill while we can get maximum value for our sales, should we wish to sell.

I think a lot of it can be traced back to last Summer

  9. bournesouprecipe on

A seemingly disproportionate amount of time to finalise an ‘option to buy deal’ that was agreed when Paulo Bernardo signed on loan last summer. No option to buy agreement for Adam Idah but a summer long continuing failure to sign Brendan’s apparent first choice striker, or anybody else, even a second choice. Another goalkeeping fiasco averted via his contacts list, a manager in mild crisis for sure reassuring the supporter and maybe himself as if we needed to know there’s no panic at Celtic, ever, we’ll always have August.

Head of recruitment ( we think ) is Brendan but who is it, shaking their head when pointed at prices, is it for the old guard, see the new guard? Can’t wait for the ‘availables’ and the price list to appear on Brendan’s laptop when the EPL etc have to name their squads, that’s when we’re in the mix for the Cantwells, and the Dessers, or if we’re really lucky this year a small slice of ‘the O’Riley money.’ There’s no guarantee ‘Brendan spend’ will bring more success, but Brendan spend is bound to be a better level than ‘punting’ otherwise the board haven’t fulfilled their end of his contract.

Won a double, but the battle with the budget seemingly never ends, loans we’ve mastered them now, haven’t we? We’re very good at this transfer lark £117M to the good guys, yet still in a relative football vacuum, where the poor bhoys dance. A ‘buffer’ they called it, against what failure to qualify for the CL? in other words, a buffer in case we’re not successful.

We’ve been here before with Brendan and a few of his predecessors.

    As ever CSC

  10. Some words from Ange on Spurs transfers from earlier today…….

“At this time of year it’s pretty hard for supporters because they don’t have all the information and it’s fair to say there’s plenty of misinformation out there.

“We’re working hard to bring players in and it’s a process that you sometimes have to be patient with. But in terms of what we set out to do, that’s still the plan and you have to stay disciplined with that.

“Sometimes the timings don’t work out and it doesn’t happen as quickly as you want and you don’t get them (players) in at the right time but I think it’s really important you stay disciplined and not run off and chase other things.

“So, what we started with at the start of summer is still there, and I wouldn’t want to put timelines on it. A lot of that is out of our control and we just need to be patient.

“From where I sit, at the moment, we’re still in that phase where what we identified is still what we’re after.”

  11. KELVINBHOY on 26TH JULY 2024 2:15 PM

They have already spent €50m on 2 development players and they’re about to sign an 18 year old South Korean called Yang.

But they’ve still got some big holes in their first team, Ange seems fairly relaxed about filling them with the sort of players he’ll need in the Champions League, even with the start of the English season just round the corner

An excellent post that some of the more negative posters on here would do well to take note of.

  13. when it comes to transfers, fans know nothing about each individual circumstances or contracts being negotiated.

does my head in the pontificating about how “they” should do it better, faster, and just give everybody everything they are asking.

in a minority of one again, i trust celtic plc to get more right than they get wrong.

and when they get it right it is big money,

i like the loan to buy principals, maybe not the “30% sell on” clauses, but it is what it is.

welcome to celitc bernardo, you will not need assimilation , you know where everything is all ready.

    who next.

  14. a spurs caller was on talkshite other day complaining that spurs dont act fast enough in transfers and that they should be outspending all the medium sized clubs in england, the host them mentioned an eye watering near billion punds debt position,

the calller asked indignantly, what has that got to do with anything.

  15. Unless something changed in the summer i thought Spurs were not in the champions league this year, pipped by Villa surely ?

i would like us to draw villa actually.

Many thanks for the earlier reply. I completely agree that, as blog owner, content is entirely at Paul’s discretion.

My opinion (and mine alone) is that no discussion of our transfer strategy or priority areas for strengthening, is mighty odd, given the time of year. Perhaps even unique in Celtic cyber space. (Do we still use that terminology?)

I’d be more than interested in Paul’s thoughts on where we need to strengthen from last season. Both for continued domestic dominance and also to start to make our presence felt in Europe, most likely the 2 Euro trophies.

We know we have gotten rid of the recruitment team who were in place this time last season. Again, I’d be interested in Paul’s thoughts on how this changes things.

Paul67 can post any lead article he chooses. Just my opinion on the content I’d like to read.

    All opinions are valid.

  17. Mr 67 favours a data driven young player development model who can be sold at a mark up on investment. don’t think he has ever named names of who we should sign ,or positions, of course he can speak for himself if I’m wrong.

  18. GLENOWEN on 26TH JULY 2024 2:41 PM

Feel free to ignore if you don’t want my input into your discussion

In the many articles Paul67 has published I can rarely remember reading about players that need improving on. I think it’s obvious the areas we need to strengthen but by singling out a left back or centre back it could undermine them

It would be odd if he did

I’m of the same thinking, it’s why I’ll always defend the players in the team. I don’t think it’s good for the team, or for Celtic to add to the noise, although I think sometimes that arguing in itself adds to the noise

As for getting business done quickly, oaul67 has addressed it this Summer like he does every Summer, early on and sometimes before the window opens.

I think Brendan’s presser the other night shoiuld be answer enough for a few weeks at least. Paul67 probably struggles to come up with something interesting everyday and while it would no doubt drive a lot of traffic to the site it’s not something you can’t see all over the site and the internet every day.

  20. Brendan has taken control of the whole Recruitment area into his own hands. Joe Dudgeon and Mark Lawwell handed in their notice in February and were then placed on Gardening leave. Since then there have not been any new appointments for these jobs.

Brendan had the first and last word in Recruitment but now has control on the whole process. I believe that after there was a meeting with the CEO and CFO then Brendan would have shown them that he is fully in charge and they would have been instructed by Brendan on what he wanted them to do. I understand that Brendan has a direct line with Dermot and is now Desmond’s go to man.

There is a Budget agreed with the Board and Brendan has flexibility to defer or bring forward spending as required. Remember that all big decisions are made by Dermot.

  21. We need a strong spine of experienced players , Kaspar , CCV , Calum , Kyogo. This should be supplemented by higher grade centre half and full back , do that we are secure at the back for CL.

Our projects will be midfielders and wingers who can flourish in our attacking system.

Projects then ‘pay for’ the higher grade spine + others , I’m sure that is the aim of the club but the perennial issue is getting the experienced guys to work in Scotland.

    HH

  22. Huns are on the hook for £9M on the Elite case , suspect they’ll split the difference £4.5M , so unlikely to trigger anything catastrophic for the Hun.

The market here not the same.Quagmire of Agents.I joked this week about the time Bernardo’s deal was taking, now most should see whats involved.
