Significant supporter relations initiative

577

Celtic’s statement yesterday (available on Phil Mac Giolla Bhain’s site) covered a lot of ground.  It explained the environment the club operates in, its policies and strategy, gave historical context of their objections to the Offensive Behaviour Bill and on-going opposition to the Act.  In short:

Where we are
How we arrived here
What we’re doing about it

Most importantly of all, the club again advertised the Supporters Complaints Review Panel, populated by Celtic fans to investigate and review complaints by fans.  The importance of this structure has yet to be fully understood but it is the most significant development in supporter relations since Brother Walfrid said, ‘How you do fancy starting a football club?’

I spoke to three prominent supporters yesterday about the schisms among us, all of us were so dispirited.  Fortunately, our good friend Jeanette cheered me up this morning and assured me we are pretty much on the one road (my words and not a cue for a song).

And it was Jeanette Findlay, not Krankie, before you ask.

The football will be back soon, hang on in there.

Reaching the end of Holy Week jogged my memory of Jesus of Nazareth on telly years ago.

Anyone remember watching Deidco play cologne at Ipox on STV and immediately after cologne scored a goal, an image of The Crucifixion appeared on the screen during the live coverage?

I think the national itv channels were showing a trailer during their programmes and a guy at STV flicked a switch at the vital moment. Cue loads of phone calls from apoplectic sevconians.

Always wondered if it was a tim did it on purpose.

    ________________________________________________________________________

Yes M8 – I remember it as if it were only yesterday.

I was watching the hun game doon at my auld Granny’s from Blantyre. May God rest her sole. Anyway – It all happened exactly as you describe M8. It was brilliant.

What jogged my memory about that time was – the huns had to play their two home games v’s us at Hampden as, ibrokes was being rebuilt at that time. This might be paranoia kicking-in but…I’m sure the huns had to play us at Hampden the Saturday before they faced Cologne and, the pitch was covered in a very light layer of snow then – cue the usual hun jiggery/poackery and…their game against us was called off despite then Celtic manager Billy McNeill’s claims that the game could have been played.

The game was called off to keep the huns fit for Cologne. imo

Anyway…the Jungle grabbed the chance to stick-it right to the huns by their constant chanting – “The huns are feart to play us…!!!” to the choon of – For he’s a jolly good fellow.

The Jungle slapped it into the huns for weeks on end with their chanting. It was brilliant M8 :o)))

But..the usual happened…we played the huns at Hampden and – oor team didny turn-up !

All wasn’t lost as this only set us up for the never to be forgotten 4-2 gemme :o)))

Anyway M8 – thanks for the memory

    God Bless Ye.

“ACL today withdrew its application to place the club into administration. It was ruled that City had already done that by placing a subsidiary company (Coventry City Football Club Ltd) into administration last Thursday.

“More than 10 points could be deducted if the Football League rules that placing the subsidiary company into administration was just a ruse, by stating that one subsidiary company was different from another involving Coventry City.

Salmond called a govt summit and both teams had to attend. Now, for me…THAT

was an open goal for the Celtic hierarchy to – drag Scotland’s little secret onto the

world stage by – holding our own press conference to tell the world WHY Celtic FC

will not be appearing at a govt summit on the back of having 3 players booked !!!

  8. I’m not a supporter of the SNP, if I vote Yes when the time comes it will be because rightly or wrongly I believe that is what’s best for the country.

However I am disgusted with the Labour Party for their lack of action in allowing the Health and Social Care Act 2012 to go through so easily. If you don’t realise, the main act of this bill removes responsibility for providing an adequate health service from the Govt.

Their lack of action on this borders on collusion. I cannot vote for them from here on in.

I’ve never been happier to live under a devolved Govt.

IT was debated for a whole 4.5 hours. Do you know why people haven’t been on the streets about this? It’s mostly because it’s not been investigated by the press, when it should have been front page news.

Their spin-masters should have keeping this on the front pages, so what have they been doing.

You’re right “collusion” was a bit strong and it implies activity whereas total apathy appears to have been the case.

I’m afraid I don’t trust them to repeal it if they get the chance.

I’m equally as upset with the Lib Dems, but I’m all out of comment on that bunch if spineless ingrates. They should have both made sure this never happened.

Free reign unlikely to herald a new Light Blues king as rebuilding starts

    By MATTHEW LINDSAY

AS Rangers have stumbled towards the Irn-Bru Third Division title in the last few weeks, manager Ally McCoist has appealed for time to strengthen his threadbare squad.

“We just have to get over the line,” he stressed after his much-depleted team had slumped to a 0-0 draw with Stirling Albion at Ibrox last weekend.

“Once we have done that, we will have to put together a team again which will win the next title. We are in desperate need of bodies.”

Having had just a matter of weeks to build a side for the 2012/13 campaign, it is understandable that he is counting the days until the summer.

McCoist had no option but to go with the youth players and smattering of senior professionals who remained in Glasgow last year after their financial difficulties.

On top of that, he brought in four of the free agents – Ian Black, Kevin Kyle, Frandcisco Sandaza and Dean Shiels – who were available in Scotland at that time.

No member of that quartet, though, has excelled consistently in the last eight months in any of the competitions Rangers have been involved in.

The foreign imports who arrived, Anestis Argyriou, Emilson Cribari, Sebastien Faure and Francesco Stella, were hardly household names either.

It is not going too far to suggest that David Templeton, signed from Hearts on the final day of the transfer business, was the only significant bit of business the manager carried out.

Even the acquisition of the winger, though, was tinged with bitter disappointment. McCoist had wanted to get six players in. He managed to get just one.

He failed in his attempt to land Australian international Ryan McGowan. In addition, he lost captain Carlos Bocanegra to Racing Santander in Spain for a year on loan.

With Black, Kyle, Andy Little, Lewis Macleod, Ross Perry, Sandaza, Shiels and Templeton all missing in recent weeks, Gers have toiled badly home and away.

So, no matter who comes and goes in the close season – and there will be a few outgoing as well as incoming – the chances are high there will be a stark improvement in standards next term.

The Rangers manager, aided and abetted by his chief scout and former team-mate Neil Murray, has spent several months scouring the country and the continent and identifying potential targets.

The Glasgow club is, of course, prohibited from paying money for players until January 2014 due to a punishment imposed by the SFA for non-payment of millions of pounds of taxes during the Craig Whyte regime.

They are, though, able to bring in players who are out of contract on September 1 and it is their intention to do so.

Cammy Bell (Kilmarnock), Andre Bikey (Middlesbrough), Jon Daly (Dundee United) and Motherwell’s Nicky Law are among those being tracked.

However, to what extent will bringing in free agents actually improve Rangers for the next campaign?

They will certainly be better than they have been in recent weeks. Having lost to part-time Annan at home, and deservedly so, it would be hard to be any worse.

But will they able to challenge in the Scottish Communities League Cup and the William Hill Scottish Cup, as many of their fans will expect them to?

Will they even be able to compete for promotion to the top flight if a move to a 12-12-18 set-up gets the go-ahead and they are fast-tracked into the second tier? It is debatable.

The Ibrox club tried to go down the route of bringing in Bosman transfers before. The results were disastrous.

In 2005, when they started to experience the off-field difficulties that came to a head last year, they attempted to bolster their pool on the cheap. The likes of Olivier Bernard and José-Karl Pierre-Fanfan failed spectacularly.

After Paul Le Guen took over in 2006 he brought in Lionel Letizi, Makhtar N’Diaye, Antoine Ponroy, Libor Sionko and William Stanger for free. He lasted until January.

The club was admittedly playing at a different level – in the SPL and in Europe – at that time. And there were several exceptions who flourished.

Jean-Alain Boumsong, Brahim Hemdani, Dado Prso and Alex Rae, to name just four, cost not a single penny. They made a tidy £8million profit on the Frenchman, who played less than 20 first-team games, and got many years of sterling service from the others.

But the fact remains that securing the services of a top player on a free transfer these days, despite the financial climate, is a huge accomplishment.

McCoist, too, has admitted publicly of the difficulty he has in persuading potential signings to drop down the divisions.

“It’s far from an ideal situation,” he confessed. “I’ve spoken to a number of players who have been put off due to the overall situation.

“The only way I can sell it to players is the size of the club and the fans. There are a lot of negatives, but I can use the training facilities and the fact we’re getting 47,000 at Ibrox every second week.”

The wages Rangers can pay will also go a long way towards luring reinforcements. But their supporters should not expect an overnight transformation.

Only when McCoist gets to dip into the £10m which has been earmarked for new players will Rangers return to anywhere near the levels they once scaled.

  18. ernie lynch – 10:23 on 28 March, 2013

So you consider that Labour did all they can to get this in the public eye? I don’t and we’ll just have to disagree.

I know a couple of folks that were on the demonstrations I think the biggest was around 250. Do you not think they would have been bigger had the public realised what was really happening?

    Anyway it’s too late now.

I missed it and I think it probably is the most eloquent and persuasive argument for dropping the myth that The Rangers and Rangers are one and the same.

For commercial purposes the myth has served its day – to put bums on seats – and with reality shining its light on the truth it will eventually be accepted as the truth universally.

I know, as thankfully it doesn’t apply up here. They were poorly attended, when it should have been mass marches. Most people simply don’t know what’s going on.

It’s worth pointing out that the 14 months was in part due to the ‘listening’ exercise that was undertaken, not due to extensive debate in parliament.

I just expected more outrage from the left about this. The medical unions opposed it but to my mind this is worthy of a general strike. I guess I’m just old fashioned.

    Let’s leave it there.
