Keep one eye on the profile of players we target and sign this summer. The model which has delivered so many trophies in recent seasons has been to sign them before they reach their peak, develop and either extend their contracts, or sell. It is sustainable and avoids the cliff edge of players spending their peak years with us, then dropping in value as the years progress.
Contrast this to what has happened across the city, where they sign players in their mid-20s in the hope of an immediate fix to a problem that conventionally takes strategic development to resolve.
In signing Connor Barron, Newco appear to have figured this out. You just hope that while they are copying our strategy, we are not copying theirs….

Part of a family tradition.
And long may it continue. Main point being that Ange made a good impression over and above just Scotland.
Kinda stating the obvious there I suppose, you do not get offered the Spurs job on a whim. Ange re-energised Celtic, lets hope Brendan can push on in Europe next season, as make it into the top 24 of 36 in the CL
Moisey17
It ain’t binary.
The players concerned will only make a profit for us is they have been good for the team. The 2 are mutual.
Nobody is gonna give us a profit on players who don’t realise their potential and make it into the team. We will not get back what we paid on Lagerbielke if we sell him this year. We did not make our money back on Haksabanovic. We cannot afford to take a bath on every player we sign so we have to find players that can make us money by being successful with the team- who play well for us.
Since the Bosman ruling came in, you cannot sign a player with a view to holding them to a Celtic contract all their lives. Players who shine will be headhunted and offered wages that we cannot afford to pay in comparison and that is very hard to turn down when it’s offered. Even Celtic fans like Kieran Tierney & John McGann will have their heads and egos turned by being thought good enough to play at a higher level and rewarded well for it.
Even when some players turn down an offer of increased wages because they like it here, such as James Forrest, their loyalty and love of the club is not always reciprocated by fans.
If we were to keep Matt O’Riley and he was willing to stay (which I doubt he is, given the views of his Danish international manager), we might not get the money we will be offered this year as Matt will be one year nearer being able to leave for free.
Any team in a peripheral league has to have tradeable players. You make as much as you can on the good ones who want to leave. You try to accommodate, within limits, the good ones that want to stay and you try not to lose too much money on the less successful players you bought just cause you want them to go.
It really does not matter what language you use to frame this- balance sheet football club or über-Celtic just thinking about the team, you still have to face the reality that you have players under contract not as indentured slaves. And some of those players will profess a willingness to renew contracts with you but will run down their contract as they drag out negotiations and try to make more money for themselves at the expense of what the club might get. In the real world, unlike Championship Manager, players have inconvenient views and career intentions and other clubs have big pockets where they can buy players for £40m that we have never seen or heard of.
ange has become annoying during the euros,
lets pump spurs in the champions league ,,,,,,,,,,, oh wait a minute.
when does james mccarthy contract end,
experienced , epl level, just what we needed at the time, how did that work out ?
I don’t envy the people who have to make signings for Celtic… I’m sure most of us were delighted when we signed Thomas Graveson and went “who” when we signed Lubo.
CELTIC MAC on 2ND JULY 2024 2:07 PM
Thumbs up
Brendan said previously he wants pace and power.
With that in mind, I await our signings with interest.
As for Sevco, I’m largely in the “who cares” camp.
I don’t actually know how many players they’ve signed already.
As for Barron? Nothing strategic about it.
If the player had fit the ideal R2ngers profile BUT had commanded a transfer fee? ..
… He wouldn’t have been signed.
One of the most annoying aspects of BBC’s Wimbledon coverage, is the fairly recent policy of interviewing the winner of the broadcast match. So cloying, so BBC. And needless, it’s not as if they have just won the final.
Oh for a John McEnroe in is prime to tell them where to shove their microphone.
OMFG

Yes and another BBC gush fest at Glastonbury , with nearly every man , woman , child, dug that works for the BBC getting a nice wee freebie to Glastonbury …….. really know what most of them do but we are the mugs that are paying for them to have their “ oh so marvelous “ weekend jolly !,
Eratic- a lot of BBC staff,in hospitality seats at Centre Court as well, on our coin probably…..
I don’t know why I torture myself each lunchtime reading CQN, this is just trolling Celtic fans now
The disrespect of BR last season was so obvious, probably because P67 following his masters wishes
If we have another summer like last it will end in tears and many hundreds of £££££ wasted watching us getting slapped about in the CL
We need young players who we can develop but also some physical and experienced players so we have a good mix
“Keep an eye on the profile of players we sign”
I would suggest keeping an eye on the exodus from the home cup ticket scheme, paying plenty for season tickets and then plenty more to not even compete for 3rd place in the CL
Up to the I individual of course but for me paying good ££ to watch us fail to even compete is not on, we are cash cows / customers at best but
Time to delete CQN from my reading list, been a long time coming and not a minute too soon
The strategic approach that Celtic has taken as regards recruitment has been very hit and miss.
With one hundred failed prospect ĺsignings since Rangers died, more miss than hit of course.
When Brendan Rodgers first arrived at Celtic, the Club had to rebuild to a certain extent.
The squad was made up of academy players, SPL signings, BR signings (the Euros hampered this of course) seasoned internationalist etc
A real mixed bag, we won a treble and qualified for the UCL.
When Ange came in, again he had a mixed approach during a rebuild which was looked on as very successful.
Since the summer of 2022 we followed a strict strategy in player recruitment with very poor outcomes.
R2ngers have, with a fraction of our resources managed to have the most successful period in their short history over the last five seasons and punched well above their weight in Europe outstripping all Scottish Clubs in terns of UEFA co-eff.
They went from revenues a third of Celtic PLC to near parity.
The idea that Celtic have had the golden goose, delivering dozens of golden eggs is quite simply a myth.
We won a double this season just gone with experienced legacy players.
With Adam Sadler as Coach, Mark Cooper as permanent Scout and Darren O’Dea as pathway manager it looks as though we are shaking things up and going for a multi-disciplined approach to squad building.
Lining up the talented young coach, Adam Asghar for the U18 role suggests that academy players will once again be taking their historic role at Celtic and Barrowfield will be producing a significant part of the Celtic squad in years to come.
We can hope that the “executive” strategists with their screens and data have had their day at Celtic…
Hail Hail
The narrative seems to be that we “just, and no more” won a Double.
And, in doing so, blunted the pens of a lot of “I told you so” scribes who said that we would not win anything.
Speaking of which, what’s happened to JHB’s last nom-de-plume.
He’s disappeared faster than a Sevco title challenge
Sftb
His post on Sunday @7.13am was the last straw – red card according to AT
But he’ll be back in another guise
Been wrong before, but my understanding is that both Idah and Jotta wish to return to Celtic. If that is the case, just do it Celtic, stop fannying around please.

While BBC Scotland scrapped ‘The Nine’ the best news – magazine programme North of the Border. It set a high bar with its’ local, GB and International news coverage and its’ journalism. But hey ho it is not a soap. And they still pay Neil McCann et al. NewsNight didn’t escape either, reduced to thirty minutes to save what exactly?
‘To inform and educate’ That’s for the birds. Though I do like Springwatch mind.
the academy will not provide a conveyor belt of talent.
that is a myth right there,
maybe one squad player every 3 years to be include in the home grown tick the uefa box squad.
and one primary talent every 5 years.
listening to the academy guy interview on celtic exchange was really interesting,
my take away like much in celtic, individual supporters on the internet know very little about how the organisations actually work.
New Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler has been speaking to the media for the first time since his appointment as Roberto de Zerbi’s successor.
On joining Brighton: “I really like the DNA – it is a very analytical, data-based approach. I like the style, playing with courage. I know they have achieved big things. It is an honour to be part of it.”
as an aside, that academy guy was very funny with comments about John kennedy.
if celtic lose a goal it is john kennedy fault.
if they score a goal thought that kennedy had them drilled a thousand times, he would not ever get a credit.
it was forever thus.
Adapt to the new paradigm or wither and die
For years there was a clamour to be more benfica like, or red bull, or ajax,
find talent, develop them, if good sell them on, if not so good just move them on when we can.
Ange says do not get too attached to your favourites, they wont be here long.
now we turn over lots and lots of players, in a similar mopdel to everyone else, data/analtics/science, but for some reason some think we should go back to rearing our own, good luck with that, we wont dominate scotland with products from the academy only.
anyways, another day without a goalkeeper how cruell of the celtic executives, and everyone knows jota and idah are waiting on the call, …………..
dismal, like the summer.
and in a real deary me moment again, i have not heard of any of the rangers signings, i couldnt pick them out in an id parade, seriuosly why compare with them who cares.

Today the club launches The Celtic Fans’ Survey 2024, and we would love to hear your views. This will be the biggest ever survey of Celtic supporters worldwide, commissioned by the club as part of our ongoing commitment to fan engagement.
A sensational end to the season saw the Hoops create history once again, becoming the first ever side to be crowned both men’s and women’s Scottish League Champions in the same season. And while Glasgow’s green and white enjoyed success on the park, we’ve continued to work at speed off it at as our new training centre in the city’s East End is taking shape, new developments have been completed at Lennoxtown and work on Celtic Park has continued in preparation for the new season.
We have also continued our strong community focus throughout the summer through Celtic FC Foundation with some great initiatives and many more to come as we continue to make a positive difference to the lives of so many people.
Before competitive action returns in August, we want to hear your opinions on a variety of topics that will help guide our future decision-making. Your input is invaluable, and we are committed to ensuring your voice is heard.

Do you not think there a bit of an irony in agreeing with a post by someone called CELTIC BY NUMBERS on the same page as slagging off the use of data?
You do know what he does don’t you?
Paul67
On the passing of John Keane what an irony that the Celtic he leaves behind has more money, than it can possibly spend. Are we now fully conditioned to accept that top quality players won’t come to Celtic? because we certainly cannot claim any longer, that we are unable to afford them. Any comparison with new city arrivals who started and continue with nothing, is a disingenuous pure waste of time.
There was no point is bringing back a ‘top, top manager’ unless he could buy his own players. His remit within last year’s timeframe was simple, win the league and ‘do better’ in the CL, he pulled of both, meanwhile the landscape changed and people move on.
Accepted is the modern reality is that our bench will have potential and project players including a home based quota for the CL. However, a Celtic squad must include , match day experience ‘ difference makers ’ and when your bank balance goes up, so must your quality of personnel. We’re booked for the States pre season, and should be taking more than back up Scott Bain and two young keepers to fill the goalposts, we’ve a hundred million reasons to thank John Keane.
Please rate the atmosphere at Celtic Park:
We understand that results and performances can play a big part in your matchday experience but setting those aside, please rate your overall matchday experience at Celtic Park:
i took the words “no huns at celtic park ” out, didnt think it was appropriate

more standing, bigger capacity, no “rangers” away fans, stop promoting the “old firm”

copyrighjt jo venglos.
A good team will have one.
A better team will have two.
The best teams have 3.
How many do we have asks jock brown, well only Larsson replies the good doctor.
Lets go see the slovakia captain, he might still have it.

Ruh Patterson being interviewed by Williiam Crawley on BBC Radio Ulster’s TalkBack programme.A vile woman is Patterson.
CELTIC40ME @ 4:42 PM,
Yes, I know who he is, he used to comment on here quite regularly.
No, I don’t see any irony at all – data, analytics, etc is very important I’ve discussed that on here before.
That wasn’t the point I was making
It’s folk like middle aged Accounts and Lawyers etc who don’t understand the tools or strategic thinking making decisions that are plain wrong that is concerning.
Also my deep aversion to Maslow’s Hammer…
CelticByNumbers has never struck me as a one dimensional guy…
Hail Hail
Hail Hail
Had a quick look at the DR before the footie. Their leader story is the huns signing a wonderkid, of course what else would he be, from hertz. A 15 yo kid called Alfie Hutchison, desperate stuff to excite the hun support …..
Right footie time ⚽️⚽️

Having just completed the survey I can confirm that there are opportunities to vent your spleen regarding recruitment , facilities or whatever bugs you .
There’s no guarantee though , that recruitment will improve , or the pies get any hotter .
