Silk from financial sow’s ear

1048

World Soccer Magazine published a fascinating table at the bottom of an article on the respective financial might of Chelsea and Manchester City yesterday, detailing player spend and sales for current English Premier League clubs over the last 10 seasons.

Liverpool have an average net spend of £18.1m as they chase former glories while Manchester United, who stole Liverpool’s place at the top of the English pile, had only a marginally higher net spend of £18.6m.

Fifth on the list is Aston Villa, largely on the back of an attempt to take over the world during Martin O’Neill’s reign, spending a net average of £11.1m.

Most fascinating of all is that 11 of the 20 have a net average spend of less than £4m per season.  They spend big, but apart from the odd team spending some foreign country’s mineral wealth, they also sell big.

Bottom of the table of net biggest spenders in Everton, who sold £7.8m of talent more than they bought during the period.  Newcastle United are also in a surplus, thanks in part to their recently departed director of football, Joe Kinnear, who completed his service without spending a penny.

Crystal Palace clearly have an eye for a bargain.  They successfully negotiated a return to the Premier League, and then bought Joe Ledley as his Celtic contract ran down, with an average net spend of £722k.

The Silk from a Sow’s Ear prize has to go to Arsenal.  The last decade has not been generous to Arsenal, however, their average net spend is only £1.5m per season having sold £277m worth of talent.  Their business model is not right, i.e. they have not been able to compete with those who don’t seem to care if they break even, but they, more than any other club in Europe*, are primed for the Financial Fair Play era.

*apart from Celtic, of course.

  1. A smashing article in the DR by David McCarthy this morning referring to the Tynecastle assault on NFL, amongst other things

  2. BT thoughts with you. I know how you must feel but kids are so resilliant and as your Marco is strong as an Ox I’m sure with your love and help and the care of the medics he will be back better than ever.

No Bobby Does It Petta,- It wouldn’t matter whether I wrote the book or not. For me, the crap articles everyone five minutes, and behaviour of those clearly campaigning on here(I wonder what the response would be if people were selfishly promoting their own product on here every three posts?) will eventually show up how unprepared Scotland is for Independence and actually unnecessary.

I’m not the one campaigning, you clearly are, I was just pointing out that no amount of repeated nonsense will change my note. So, you haven’t changed my vote. You failed. Others may have been swung but they’d be much weaker for it.

Both of you- why can’t you just say who you are voting for and leave it at that. Perhaps everyone on the blog should then we don’t have to talk about it again?

  4. Even if Rangers had survived I would not want to play them again, who would want to play with a proven cheat!

Young Marco will be in my thoughts today, all the best wee mhan.

Just off the phone to the ticket office and had to pay £20 plus handling fee even though I am a season ticket holder. Didn’t realise that you had to turn up in person to get the ST discount.

What is all that about. I live about 4 hours from CP and it is obviously not practical to buy a ticket in person. Does anyone have JP McBrides email address as I am raging about this.

  10. Just caught up with some of the contributions to the bhlog from the evening shift. Particularly enjoyed some of the contributions on the gay marriage legislation, especially those from ‘call me Gerry’. Poor Gerry is worried that following the passing of the new laws we are all now likely to wake up and choose to be gay, thus ending civilisation as we know it.

Well, I’ve been awake since 6.45am, and so far – other than roller-blading to work listening to Erasure on my massive headphones and chatting to the girls in the office in a high-pitched animated way about the Kardashians – I appear to have survived the night unscathed.

  12. Celtic Mac I wasn’t and wouldn’t expect to be, the background was that I merely pointed out that just because one has an opinion on the indy debate doesn’t mean you should post it every five minutes. It is apparently okay to do this if you are campaigning for the Yes vote (I’m not campaigning for the no vote) but if you question the articles, like I was, I was accused by some of being a hun and insulted by others. I quite like talking about Celtic HH

Im beginning to wonder at the claims of sevco’s imminent demise.

Ive been hearing for a while, how bad their financial situation is, nobody will give them a loan etc.

Yet….here we are, and they are still rolling along with dubious penalty decisions and the help of honest mistakes, aided and abetted by the usual suspects.

Nothing has changed that I can see….its just the same old nonsense, under a different guise.

The powers that be are desperate to roll back the clock, their vile hatred and bigotry has not decreased in any way, they are rabid.

Celtic will never have a level playing field in Scotland, that league is bent, always has been, always will be.

There is no future in being cheated, I really hope we can escape this cesspit.

Otherwise, it wont be long before they are back in the driving seat, and even more rabid in their hatred.

I wont be a party to any revived old firm agenda, id rather stop watching football completely.

They are everything that’s rotten in football and more, they have ruined the game in this country, and hopefully by some miracle, we can escape and leave them to it to cheat amongst themselves.

Because the truth is….they totally depend on Celtic, we give them a reason for living.

But if we can escape this league, they will wither and die…..just like their knuckle dragging ancestors.

Scottish Football died a long time ago…..let them cheat amongst themselves.
