Silk from financial sow’s ear

1048

World Soccer Magazine published a fascinating table at the bottom of an article on the respective financial might of Chelsea and Manchester City yesterday, detailing player spend and sales for current English Premier League clubs over the last 10 seasons.

Liverpool have an average net spend of £18.1m as they chase former glories while Manchester United, who stole Liverpool’s place at the top of the English pile, had only a marginally higher net spend of £18.6m.

Fifth on the list is Aston Villa, largely on the back of an attempt to take over the world during Martin O’Neill’s reign, spending a net average of £11.1m.

Most fascinating of all is that 11 of the 20 have a net average spend of less than £4m per season.  They spend big, but apart from the odd team spending some foreign country’s mineral wealth, they also sell big.

Bottom of the table of net biggest spenders in Everton, who sold £7.8m of talent more than they bought during the period.  Newcastle United are also in a surplus, thanks in part to their recently departed director of football, Joe Kinnear, who completed his service without spending a penny.

Crystal Palace clearly have an eye for a bargain.  They successfully negotiated a return to the Premier League, and then bought Joe Ledley as his Celtic contract ran down, with an average net spend of £722k.

The Silk from a Sow’s Ear prize has to go to Arsenal.  The last decade has not been generous to Arsenal, however, their average net spend is only £1.5m per season having sold £277m worth of talent.  Their business model is not right, i.e. they have not been able to compete with those who don’t seem to care if they break even, but they, more than any other club in Europe*, are primed for the Financial Fair Play era.

*apart from Celtic, of course.

I don’t feel like anyone is “campaigning” on here, merely adding their opinion to an ongoing debate.

You also seemed to suggest I perhaps had an agenda, which I do not.

I am on the fence, but with one foot touching the Yes grass. As a man of limited intelligence, I find the extent of politics involved too complex to fully comprehend. Reaching an informed decision therefore, can be difficult.

However, I do ask myself simple questions which may perhaps cut through all the noise. For example:

    1. Who has Scotland’s best interests at heart – an English government in London or a Scottish government in Edinburgh?

    and

    2. Why are the British/English government so apparently desperate to retain the union?

Like the questions themselves, the answers are simple:

    1. A Scottish government based in Edinburgh will do more for Scotland than posh Tory Englishmen based in London.

    2. Oil wealth.

Over-simplifying matters? Perhaps. But fundamental points nonetheless.

The next logical question for me is, do we have what it takes to go it alone? So I look for contemporary evidence. And I find Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark. The similarities with Scotland are undeniable. Their success is undeniable. And our additional wealth/natural resources is undeniable.

Hopefully that clears up where I’m coming from. Although I’m sure you really couldn’t give a toss for my own position.

I would comment finally on this – much of the community are seemingly basing their decision on religious allegiances. The proddies are voting NO because it’s all a Catholic conspiracy; and the Catholics are voting NO because they’ll be persecuted and lose their Kafflic schools. Altogether a truly depressing, pathetic and disturbing reflection of 21st Century Scotland; no better summed up than the Muppet last night who stated he will be voting NO because Alex Salmond was a Hearts supporter.

  2. Billy Bhoy your are doing yourself and your campaign no favours. This is not Ireland. I don’t like what the Brits did to Ireland anymore than you. But voting no does not make me anything you say. You are not God, you don’t have that power. And how dare you accuse me of that. I am a Celtic fan, proud Glaswegian, Scot and European because I don’t agree with with your campaign, you insult me.

Your campaign just lost votes right there….. and some more…….and some more.

Does anyone else think this is out of line?

  3. After last nights historic vote in the Scottish Parliament I would just like to assure my friends in CQN that I awoke this morning deliriously happy but as yet I have not found that happiness to be deemed Gay, yet! But there is still time you know.

Seriously! Some of the drivel that runs from some fingers is just, well… stupid, rediculous, ill-informed, vindictive…

Boy I wish I was holier than though. It must be so Gay.

  4. dear oh dear, this political spat is boring and juvenile.

do any of you really believe the nonsense spouted by career politicians, more fool you if you do.

these people are just out to shaft you, what ever party you vote for, cant you see, that its the political class that’s responsible for all the nonsense that goes on, on a daily basis.

wake up….read your history, party politics is the cause of poverty and inequality, and its because people believe ideological nonsense spouted by politicians, that the world is in turmoil…..stop believing these, Labour,SNP half wits…..and think for yourself.

Now….can we get back to getting rid of sevco.

Was elsewhere for a bit, not ignoring your response. Cannot see how the debate over the Referendum can be avoided on here or anywhere else, and the fact is, the Celtic support do not speak with one voice, here or elsewhere, which like it or not is going to make for some strange bedfellows.

For what it is worth I happen to believe that it is about a struggle for influence between Scotland and London.

The Green Man. I agree with your post they have been working to there own plan since Murray sold the club to Whyte for a pound. It is a long haul strategy and they will lose there debts along the way. They will eventualy get to the promised land of the SPL and I believe they will be prepared to almost anything to win it and get a CL place I do believe after all they have been through they will be more bitter than ever H.H.

I have aspirations for my children and their children in an Independent Scotland and I am not prepared to sit back and let people like you destroy that dream. This campaign will get messy because us Republicans have too much to lose. The alternative is being stuck to the Yoke of British Rule and the backlash that has already been planned. The massive attack from Westminster on cutting the welfare benefits of our most vulnerable subjects.

You stay with Trident supporting warmongers, bedroom tax and let us Scots earn our freedom from Westminster by voting Yes.

  11. Catman

Thanks for posting that list. Several stand out – Boumsong and Arteta because even at the time they stank of something not quite right. Thomas Buffel and Nuno Capucho – incredibly hyped by the media here but who turned out to be total duds. Novo and Cannigia signed at the eleventh hour ahead of Celtic who’d apparently been in pole position to sign the players. No marks like Vanoli, Kyriagkos and Bernard. And of course Campbell Ogilvie. Whose name on the list…well I am sure he’s a lovely guy and was in no way conflicted two years ago.

  13. Celtic Mac,

I appreciate what you’re saying and I wouldn’t expect everyone to agree and certainly not on this blog. Reasoned debate or facts I would welcome. I just expected a slightly higher standard on here and not more or less ; “just go for it vote yes, let’s just see how all pans out” and if you don’t vote yes you’re a H*n.

    Thanks for the response, HH

  14. The art of rhetoric is something everybody should be aware of, politicians are schooled in it, and make fortunes from its application…..you voters know this, yet still try to promote the ramblings of some lazy fool of a politician;….well, im not buying it, so please refrain from repeating this political rhetoric.

Have the sense to have your own opinions, that aren’t guided by fat cat, limousine driven idiots.

I don’t know about you…but I doubt that Alex Salmond, or Ed Milliband could teach me anything about life…..so how people can spout their nonsense is beyond me.

Im not listening to any of that, because its a steaming pile of rhetorical ****

Lets talk about how Celtic supporters are being demonised by the very same people, that some of you seem so keen on promoting.

  15. Don’t know what will happen with the huns in the next few weeks/months, always said that they will eat themselves, proved to be right as have a few on here said the same.

How do they get back into the top flight???

How do they get to a level to challenge us???

to do both they are going to need alot of investment, which they have had & squandered the lot… they will have to do this another 2 or 3 times to get near us, even with the help of SFA etc

Are thre any ‘INVESTORS’ out there willing to risk alot of money on them…No!!

Individuals may be out there but they could be lossing the lot to get there

Who owns the satdium is another matter but the cost of repairing it is vast…another expense that will see money diverted away from the team

My thoughts on it are…. They are F*****d, no matter what they do

    Any Thoughts

  16. Billy Bhoy 05 So in order to claim the dream of that “free” democracy you are prepared to bully, intimidate and scaremonger? Do you see just how wrong that is? I’m not being funny, but is that the story you want to tell the grand kids? Do you think they’d be proud you resorted to intimidation? I’m admire you for for explaining your reasons, but I don’t think you’re going about it the right way. HH
