Silk from financial sow’s ear

1048

World Soccer Magazine published a fascinating table at the bottom of an article on the respective financial might of Chelsea and Manchester City yesterday, detailing player spend and sales for current English Premier League clubs over the last 10 seasons.

Liverpool have an average net spend of £18.1m as they chase former glories while Manchester United, who stole Liverpool’s place at the top of the English pile, had only a marginally higher net spend of £18.6m.

Fifth on the list is Aston Villa, largely on the back of an attempt to take over the world during Martin O’Neill’s reign, spending a net average of £11.1m.

Most fascinating of all is that 11 of the 20 have a net average spend of less than £4m per season.  They spend big, but apart from the odd team spending some foreign country’s mineral wealth, they also sell big.

Bottom of the table of net biggest spenders in Everton, who sold £7.8m of talent more than they bought during the period.  Newcastle United are also in a surplus, thanks in part to their recently departed director of football, Joe Kinnear, who completed his service without spending a penny.

Crystal Palace clearly have an eye for a bargain.  They successfully negotiated a return to the Premier League, and then bought Joe Ledley as his Celtic contract ran down, with an average net spend of £722k.

The Silk from a Sow’s Ear prize has to go to Arsenal.  The last decade has not been generous to Arsenal, however, their average net spend is only £1.5m per season having sold £277m worth of talent.  Their business model is not right, i.e. they have not been able to compete with those who don’t seem to care if they break even, but they, more than any other club in Europe*, are primed for the Financial Fair Play era.

*apart from Celtic, of course.

timbhoy2. Yes it is a concern the falling gates at parkhead however, your point at 40,000 fans at Ibrokes for recent matches is debatable if you can take a look at the empty spaces you should find them on you tube.I think after you have viewed them you might address your 40,000 downwards. H.H.

Unless I am mistaken, the present day Queen Elizabeth, has no links to the English nation at all and that despite her German background, she is only directly related to the Scots. Following the death of Queen Anne, (James II younger daughter) who reigned from 1702-1714 after the demise of King Billy, (no cheering in the back there), George I became King. That was in the main a result of the Act of Settlement of 1701 which banned Catholics from the throne. Ostensibly this ended the Stewart line, but not for George himself, in that his mother, Sophie of Hanover, was in fact the granddaughter of James I, (James VI of Scotland), and indeed without that link he would not have succeeded Queen Anne, Protestant or no. James’s mother of course was no less than Mary Queen of Scots.

Not a lot of people know that!

Just had footage of Lizzie on BBC news Scotland from the 70’s – she was dressed from head to toe in Emerald Green. An omen for the zombie, lol.

    Big Nan @ 18.02

I will bow to your supereior age, sorry, knowledge :-))

Found this on Wiki, but doesn`t mean it`s spot on…….

At half-time, with the scoreline at Dens Park still 0–0, it was announced over the public address system that Celtic were winning 4–0. Although Hearts were on course to win the point they needed to win the championship, the score at Love Street meant that Hearts had lost their goal difference advantage over Celtic. Hearts knew that they would have to avoid defeat in their match to win the championship.

Midway through the second half, with the score at Dens Park still locked at 0–0, the Dundee manager Archie Knox brought on Kidd (a forward) as a substitute for left full-back Tosh McKinlay in an effort to win the game. Dundee needed to win the game to stand a chance of qualifying for the UEFA Cup.

    ………………………….

Yes I knew Alec pretty well through work and he was a big bluenose and a Mason IIRC but he was a decent bloke and told me that as far as he was concerned Hearts could have won the game without it breaking his heart as assistant, but he was professional enough not to stop Kidd getting on as he (Albert) was desperate to get on.

The rest as they say is history.

I was at 4-1 League Cup final and said to Alec, I don’t suppose you’ve seen it again. He said he had a video recording and on a Friday night he sat down with a big glass of whisky to watch it as the start to his weekend.

He may have been winding me up mind, but as I say a decent bloke.

  15. Who would you trust to retain Catholic schools?

    The Nationalists or Scottish Labour?

It has to be the Nationalists but only just. The alternative bunch of scoundrels will eventually demand an end to faith schools as they despise faith. Anyway, being many miles away from home ensures that it ain’t got too much to do with me these days. Good luck Scotland whatever you decide. It isn’t much of a choice.

It would be amusing to see Irish Republican supporting Celtic supporters embracing the Orange Order and UKIP supporters on a ‘Save the Union’ platform.
