Simunovic in town as deadline deals loom

219

Transfer Deadline Day is now part of our sport. To get through it successfully requires research, money and experience. It’s a new kind of football tactics which can determine the outcome of a season every bit as much as zonal marking.

If you encounter someone say “Just go out and sign him”, mark their card. From what I hear Celtic are working on deals in an End of Days-style market this week. The domestic business (Ryan Christie) has been straightforward. All other deals, and I’m sure more will happen, are going through some sort of torture.

Croatian central defender Jozo Simunovic is in town and I expect the intent is there from all parties to conclude a deal today, but we’re 12 hours away from the window closing and six away from the English deadline, so the range of possibilities on how today pans out is almost endless.

That’s it for now. Sit tight and try to get some work done this afternoon. More when I have it.

  1. Croatia joined the EU in 2013. Britain does not allow free movement of workers from Croatia to the EU so Simunovic will need a work permit to come here.

  2. imagine a place where we’d sign a centre half to partner big Virgil

kept Wanyama, Ki, Hooper and Ledley

I really can’t see the point of bothering anymore.

My support of Celtic remains but playing here is killing us.

  3. Starry Plough

Croats need work permits for the UK .The UK does not treat every European citizen equally.

  4. Hoping Charlie Boy beats the Sevco rap.

We all knew he was a con man but I like the thought that he strode into town, helped to put the lights out conned the media (anyone can con the hordes) and then walked off with the family silver.

  5. I’ll be sorry to see VVD go but it was inevitable as was Wanyama as was Foster.

The trick is to find a suitable replacement then the patience as they bed in.

Now that the CL is out the way and having failed in that quest hindsight will say we should have sold him close season and got a new pairing in then ignoring how that worked last year.

Celtic’s policy means CL participation is going to be cyclical.

For evidence check Ajax’s record. It’s like the Hokey pokey.

There are a number of factors making CL qualification hazardous.

    Churn. New players/ new manager.

Match fitness due to season start.

Qualification is by cup tie result not points.

Making injuries ref decisions etc the deciding factor not the wage bill.

The job is to change those factors and signing Scots who will remain with us longer will reduce churn.

Changing our season will help match fitness but the most effective of all would be making qualification a points based system.

“I still fear this is one of the Board’s mirror tricks to cover Van Dijk’s exit. I hope I’m wrong, but if the message is “sorry, we couldn’t get the work permit” it won’t be a shock.”

I’m sorry but do you actually think that PL would fly to Croatia for transfer talks, go to the trouble of agreeing deals with the player and the clubs as well as having the boy fly over here for a medical….to trick the Celtic support?

Even Sydney Tim would struggle to believe that

  9. Virgil van Dijk told the official Celtic website: “I would like to thank all the Celtic fans for the magnificent support they have given me during my time at the club.

“Celtic is a brilliant football club, it will always be in my heart and I will always be a Celtic supporter myself.

“I know Celtic did not want me to leave and wanted to extend my contract. The club did everything to keep me and I appreciate that but I felt the time was right for a new challenge in the English Premier League.

“I thank everyone at the club, the manager and all the staff and I wish Celtic and the fans the very best for the future.”

Why does the Big Croatian need a work permit if Croatia is in the E:U. or is it some SFA bollocks??

Free movement is allowed so no visa required

    Lawwell’s rocketing salary:

£738,987 for 2008/9, compared to £550,122 for the previous year –

    ( in itself a 25% increase from 2007/8 to 2008/9)

£999,496 received by the Parkhead chief in the financial year 2013/14

so increaseis actually in excess of 25%…. Your club accounts would be safer in my hands than yours…

    15%? Pfffft!

Celtic play in Scotland,we all know the limitations that go along with that fact,to keep banging on about it is pointless,,,we will continue to buy and sell young up and coming players both from Scotland and abroad.

    Thought provoking.

Didn’t someone mention last week on CQN that we have set up a consultative group from local Celtic friendly businessmen to advise on ways to increase revenue, improve our profile?

BTW That’s two days in a row you have provided a dose or reality.

    Hat trick tomorrow?

Seems the new centre half started well and was a regular at DZ but went off the boil in the last six months of the season just gone when he was in and out of the team. Hopefully the willingness of the DZ fans to get shut of him is not a bad omen. Maybe he’ll be our Daryl Murphy (i.e. much better elsewhere!) Here’s hoping!!

It would be refreshing if this had a positive effect on those who have such a dislike of our Board:

“I know Celtic did not want me to leave and wanted to extend my contract. The club did everything to keep me – ”

    The Celtic Waahay

Seriously we really need to form a coalition of the dying ( not zombies) but those clubs who will be the feeders to change the set up that favours Super Clubs.

That means governments of clubs in smaller countries arguing the case.

The obvious answer is a European League of so many divisions with promotion relegation to national/regional leagues.

  20. Cultsbhoy,

Do the football rules require a work permit to be issued in advance of registration? Is that mandatory or is it the case that we will not take the risk of acquiring and registering the player without the work permit being granted?

In any event there were reports that the work permit had been applied for two days ago which would have been the sensible thing to do as it the application could always be withdrawn in the event of things not concluding.

  22. Captain Beefheart on

    Brogan,

Celtic don’t, sadly, belong in the same company as FC Porto. They invest well, play good football and win in Europe. We don’t.

As for Europe needing our fans, sorry but that is delusional. Nobody cares. Other supports take big numbers.

  23. Beamishismypint on

Seems Real Madrid are blaming MU. They say they sent the contract for De Gea at 13:39 yesterday and got a reply with changes which they accepted at 21:43. United reached an agreement with Keylor Navas at 23:53. United introduced De Geas contract into the FIFA system at 00:00 and so when Real Madrid tried to do their bit the FIFA system was closed to them (00:02). If all of that is true, it looks like United scuppered the goalkeeper swap. Either way as an anti-madridista l=)!

It’s unfair to compare Celtic to Porto.

These clubs are closely aligned with super agents who use them as the first port of call for South American players due to their lax employment law.

Not only that but a lot of their players are actually third-party owned.

It’s all very shady business. How many young Portugese players do Porto bring through? Not many.

It’s all the imported South American talent like James Rodriguez, Jackson Martinez etc.

  26. ibleedgreenandwhite1 – completely agree mate – a total mystery all this complaining – we are what we are.

  27. Good move for Eoin O’Connell playing in another competitive league, and so much better than under developing in meaningless friendly games around Lennoxtown, Airdrie etc.

We should farm out every prospect we have, and recall the ones that are ready.

( All part of the bigger Raingurs scandal when the Scottish reserve league was undermined, then scrapped because they couldn’t afford to have a second team, then hey presto a first team.)
