Simunovic, the stats don’t lie

333

It was good to see Jozo Simunovic return to the starting line-up on Sunday. He is every inch the player we hoped he would be when he joined from Dimano Zagreb two years ago, but that was in doubt as recently as August last year, when Celtic allowed the player to travel to Italy to secure his exit from the club.

That month he and, then injured, Dedryck Boyata were well out of the picture as Celtic played their most important games of the season. Against Hapoel Be’re Shiva in the Champions League play-off round, we played Toure and O’Connell in central defence at home, with Toure and Lustig in the middle for the crucial game in Israel.

The earlier round against Astana saw O’Connell pair with Lustig in one game and Ambrose in the other. When you consider Saidy Janko started two of those four games, you appreciate how far we’ve come defensively in six months. Would you bet on Celtic to qualify for the Champions League with a defence drawn from that pool? I wouldn’t.

Dundee’s spectacular goal on Sunday (through no fault of Jozo’s) was only the second goal we’ve conceded with the Croat on the field since Dundee last scored against us. The defender aided Celtic to six clean sheets in seven games in that time.

We’ve now conceded once in each of our last three games, if Jozo remains fit, he’ll tidy up that statistic.

  1. Really, really DIRE they are. Bannen especially hopeless. That “performance” was a swindle for the paying punters who were unfortunate enough to experience the crap on show.

The point that I was trying to make was the tone of the comments of those who actually engaged with Martin, e.g. Paisley Jnr., Robinson, Trimble and even Forster, were far more appreciative than some of the cross channel people, like Tebbit, etc.

You are not going to get universal acknowledgement on his achievements, even from the Nationalist constituency, never mind the hard core loyalists.

How are you fhriend. Hope you’re keeping well and keeping that GFTB on the straight and narrow.

There was a big fall out over Brendan Hughes contributing to that book and participating in the Boston University oral narrative.

David Ervine was an extraordinary and exceptional loyalist politician. He was caught with a bomb in a car on his way to blow up a bar frequented by Catholics/Nationalists. Maybe that was why he empathised with Republicans. He became convinced that the only way forward was through dialogue with Nationalist/Republican politicians. He exposed the Dup and the UUP for the charlatans that they were in their treatment of the Protestant working class. I had a friend who was the Principal of a Catholic post 11 school who got Ervine as the guest speaker at their awards evening. There was some discontent among the parents but I have to say it was minuscule and his talk on that evening was excellent. If truth be told when he died hope for a progressive politics within Unionism died as well.

If your looking for a decent read get a copy of Anne Cadwalladers “Lethal Allies”. Scary stuff.

Blair, Alistair Campbell and Jonathan Powell spoke well of him.

As of course did Jeremy Corbyn.

    I wouldn’t regard Tebbit’s views as representative.

I know but every single one of the comments from Unionist politicians had a caveat. Mairtins achievements were being damned with faint praise. Must admit though was pleasantly surprised by Trimble and Robinson comments even given the provisos above.

Your point about the splits within the Nationalist constituency over his legacy are valid particularly from those still involved in active politics. Given where we are coming from and the strides made they really should have been a lot more effusive in their praise. Reminds me of the GB Shaw quote ” if you put an Irishman on a spit, you will always find another Irishman to turn him”.

I did stipulate that those who engaged with him had a positive appreciation .

Agreed re the caveat, but, it could betaken as recognition of the journey Martin made.
