Sinclair, Johansen, take-a-pop Rogic, precocious Nesbitt

239

After losing at home to Newco last month Motherwell comfortably overcame three lower league sides in the League Cup before delivering an excellent win at Rugby Park on the opening day of the league season. They will pitch up at Celtic Park tonight hopeful of catching Celtic with their eye on the European prize.

For Brendan Rodgers tonight will not only be an important cup game he wants to win, it’s another opportunity to improve the fitness of his squad ahead our Summer Cup Finals against Hapoel Beer Shiva, the first of which takes place one week from today.

Having only played 30 minutes so far this season, Scott Sinclair will be behind the rest of the squad in terms of match fitness and may be asked to play 90 minutes tonight. Stefan Johansen is another who could do with a full game under his belt. As for the others, it’s a balance between building endurance but making sure they get enough rest ahead of next week.

Tom Rogic’s new contract has been universally welcomed. I was late to the Rogic Appreciation Society, but it all came together last season. One of the specifics he brings is the ability to shoot from outside the box. Celtic play against packed defences most weeks (Scott Sinclair will learn that the space he exploited at Tynecastle on Sunday will be a rarity), so being able to take a pop from distance offers vital variation.

Keep an eye on Aidan Nesbitt’s progress on loan at Morton until January. Aidan (19) was at Partick Thistle for the second half of last season. Young, creative players don’t get prime billing in the bottom half of the Premiership, so a move to the Championship should give him a better platform to but on his precocious talents.

No mistakes tonight, Celtic.

Sinclair fee quoted from 3 million to 4.5 million.

Likely it was a nominal fee & just to pay up what remained of a contract.

I think we might have the people in place … Sviatchenko and/or Ajer would do for this role. Particularly, once we get our players back from injury, Kolo and Jozo or O’Connel could be our centre backs, which would free up Erick to move forward a bit.

    —–

I disagree mate. It confuses me why people want to shunt our centre halves, into centre midfield roles. Forever saw people suggesting Ambrose for defensive mid. His biggest problem is getting caught on the ball, so move him further up the field where he will get less time? Never made sense to me. I don’t think Sviatchenko could play there effectively either.

Ajer being younger his position is yet unclear, but he was fairly average playing centre mid in the Irn Bru cup against Annan. Gave away the ball in dangerous areas and while not terrible, you would think with his physical attributes at that level he would stand out. I think he is still very raw and will need time. Miller, Nesbitt and Aitchison showed some promise, but the only player that looked ready for the 1st team was Ralston, who was head and shoulders above everyone else.

I still think Bitton can play defensive mid if he can get back to 2014 / 15 form, people say he’s slow but Pirlo played there for Juve and Italy and he makes Bitton look like Usain Bolt. That said a centre mid is almost certainly what Rodgers is looking to bring in.

Aye, give it to them tight tonight.

I think I read somewhere that Brendan was concerned about the. team lines being leaked. We’ll have to get that sorted.

    Brown Rogic McGregor

    Forrest Dembele Sinclair

  22. Ambrose, Ajer, Bitton, Sviatchenko and Johannsen could all play defensive midfield (though not at the same time).

They all have the skillset and would work well with the right coaching from BR and his team. With the exception of Sviatchenko and Ajer, they have all had a turn at this role.

As far as big Efe is concerned, I am certain that much of his troubles are down to confidence (or the lack of it) and concentration (ditto). Both of these shortcomings can be worked on and resolved.
