Sinclair really wanted Celtic, overinvestment… now January

620

Scoring minutes after making your debut doesn’t guarantee a great career at a club, but Scott Sinclair gave himself an excellent start with his winning goal at Tynecastle. Leigh Griffiths lead-up work was magnificent. The Hearts defence had no answer.

Scott’s transfer took weeks (and a lot of money) to complete but it was the player’s tenacity to come to Celtic which decided the matter.  I hear Celtic met Aston Villa’s initial target price early in the negotiations, but Villa decided to hold their cards for a few weeks in an attempt to induce other bidders.  Scott was clear from the off that there was only one place he was going, but while Villa sat tight, there was a worry that another club would come in with a seriously large wage offer.  The deal happened when the player continued with the mantra, “I’m going to Celtic or nowhere”.  This is a guy who really wants to play for Celtic.

Apart from Tony Watt’s excellent chance yesterday, which should have brought Hearts level, the home side didn’t have a chance worthy of the name. A policy of throwing yourself to the ground inside the box doesn’t count, so we can be happy with how our defence is performing with Kolo Toure in the team.  There’s still a long way to go, but the direction of travel is clear.  Watt and Conon Sammon will cause a lot of damage in the Premiership this season, but on the evidence so far, Celtic should outperform their 15 point winning margin last term.

So disappointed to hear Dave King’s £30m – £50m overinvestment isn’t going to happen until January. This guy has been so transparent. Honestly, they get what they deserve, there’s no helping or telling them.  They backed a hostile takeover with a fantasy manifesto, while putting the thumbscrews on their club, to the extent it had to go cap in hand to its only source of funding, and hawk their commercial rights in the process.

As we’ve said here for years, the only people who can really damage a football club are its own supporters, in this case, with their inability to consider the consequences of the next action.

Running a football club is hard (serious understatement alert).  You’re going to enjoy how Dave King finds this out.

Whether there is any truth in the story or not, but my Hampshire based, CQN lurking brother, was talking to someone with Reading connections. I think it was Reading, may have been Fulham.

Anyway, the story was that Roberts’ mother, who is the Tim in the family, is desperate for Patrick to move to Celtic full time.

    Now wouldn’t that be lovely.

  2. THOMTHETHIM FOR OSCAR OK

According to his Wikipedia, his parents are both from Merseyside and young Paddy is a Liverpool fan although born in London:))

Celtic would have to pay big bucks for this Bhoy, miracles do happen though! Especially at Celtic:))

  3. One game, one win. Three points from a difficult away game. A goal for the new signing, Pretty good start really.

The team selection was much as expected – we’re seeing change in the squad with a new manager, but given we had probably four first team picks missing it was a pretty strong line up. And I like a manager with the flexibility of thinking to change formation during the match.

The midfield balance isn’t quite right yet for me. I’m still not sure of McGregor as a central midfielder or Armstrong as a wide man, I’d see them more the other way around. I’m sure Bitton will start when fit and we’ll probably see a fair amount of Rogic in there too. We might need one more CM, especially if Johanssen goes.

  4. I always wondered what happened to ole Torre Andre. Good to see he’s doing well.

Wasn’t sure what to think when I first heard we were interested in Sinclair. Always worry a bit when a player has had a lot of clubs – although most were on loan.

The move to City was a bit strange, given how things went for him (or rather didn’t!) at Chelsea.

Anyway, he had his best period with Brendan at Swansea and is still young enough (and maybe with a point to prove) to have a successful career.

Given his eagerness to get forward for the goal yesterday I am glad he has chosen Celtic.

  6. So we have a home game on the September holiday weekend and both ends of the Schools October week. Can I start a new conspiracy theory?

  7. Isn’t it nice to be talking about football on CQN again?

Does anyone have any info on how the loan Bhoys did at the weekend? i know Lindsay, Duffy and Thomspon started for their respective temporary clubs.

Aw,ffs-dinnae dae that. That’s just raising our hopes. I never listened to my Mum when I was Patrick’s age. So my advice to Patrick is…

Listen tae yer Mum. Go to a place you’ll be loved and cherished.

  9. Anyone see the video of young Karamoko Dembele who plays for us and is only 13 I think. What a prospect, like a young Messi. Only thing is it was on the DR site. And I know no one on here goes on that site ;-)

  10. Griffiths is suspended on Wednesday as far as I remember along with Johanssen and Ambrose.

So definitely a different line up against Motherwell.

  11. The Battered Bunnet on

Had Tony Watt scored with his big chance yesterday, we’d be talking about Kolo’s poor positioning, and how he allowed Watt to walk off him as the cross came over. Lustig would be getting pelters as well for watching it happen and doing nothing.

Thought Scott Brown showed up very well again yesterday, and again with little in the way of hauners from his centre-mid partner.

Good to see James Forrest getting joy from a more direct, pacey approach, and Scott Sinclair getting a perfect start.

With Forrest on the last 6 month of his deal, and Roberts here on loan only, it’ll be interesting watching who Brendan prefers for the wide positions. Certainly there’s now overwhelming evidence that Stuart Armstrong is not a wide player.

With Griff and Dembele up front, and two from Forest, Sinclair and Roberts wide, Brendan needs to give some thought to whether he’s got enough quality in the centre to play with Broonie (Bitton, for example) or whether he needs to go to the market.

Meantime, he’s got 2 practice games to get his team shaped, his players fit and his guys firing before Hapoel roll into town.

    Bobby M,

    Yep. Mum knows best.

Wouldn’t it be great and it came to pass.

CQN would be awash with fulsome praise and admiration for ttt, the man who had the scoop!

  13. We have a serious chance of CL proper this season. With all that entails a cup game on weds is great. Knockout football is different and it gives us a competitive game to get the back four more game time, toure a bit fitter (his class rather than his fitness carried him through yesterday!)

Great week ahead. It’s got one of those feelings about it again. Like 88 or mons first in charge. Something special is going to happen for Celtic this year. I feel it!

WITS and I had the privilege of watching him and his team mates at the St.Kevin’s tourney last Good Friday.

The skill levels of those kids at U13 level was amazing, from all competing teams.

To be voted Player of the Tournament was a remarkable achievement.

I hope someone at Celtic Park shows his parents a copy of Islam Feruz’s CV, as an example of not listening to good advice…..or as Bobby M would say, “your Mother”!

There were a fair number of us on here who saw him in the flesh.

It was held on Good Friday, and the CQNers over for The Anniversary went along.

It was only later that I googled the wee fella based on a remark I’d overheard that he was only 13. In response to a comment that he’d never make it with that build.

The fella who made that comment clearly didnae know he was only 13 playing in an U-16 tournament. Neither did I.

But I knew-and so did we all,cos we were all enthusing about him and one or two others-that this was worth the money.

It was like when I saw Kenny Dalglish for the first time. He didnae look the part either. Bit of bulk on him,red-faced after five minutes.

Scored six goals. Frank Beattie testimonial.

  16. Alasdair MacLean

Quelle surprise? It wasn’t a tackle, rather Cowie charging directly at him. Andy Walker excused it as his momentum carrying him through. Aye, you tend to build up a bit of momentum when you are running at full pelt to clatter someone…

Players out to raise cash/ free wages for Patrick Roberts:

    Izzy

    Biton

    Rogic

Simonuvic ( if anybody would take him)

    Boyatta (ditto)

Johannsen ( would still command reasonable money)

Brown ( best years behind him)

    Lustig

    Cifcti

    Efe

I reckon we’d get £8m as a job lot for the above.

That would go some way to buying Roberts.

Give Roberts a 4 year deal with an option to buy himself out of the deal in 2 years.

I’d also consider similar for James Forest.

Get a younger faster fresher feel to the team.. A look forward ambitious team.

I’ve put Biton in there even though I rate him. I’ve not put GMS or Armstrong in as I think both could come good given time and proper position.

Lustig and Brown have been good servants but are very much yesterday’s men.

The others are in because they are not up to requirements.

Thought the ref looked out of his depth yesterday, There were a couple of close ups where he seemed to be in a state of panic, probably at the possibility of a red card for one of them. And then there’s the “penalty”. (Has the Hearts player been cited for simulation yet?)

Interesting how the commentators seemed to like Hearts “physical” approach too.

    Alasdair,

The risk of being another John Kennedy is a real one.

Tierney has been a target for assault in almost every game he has played,

He doesn’t spare himself in the tackle. He is hard, but fair. Never goes in high or follows through.
