Sinister and inflammatory

542

I was considerably alarmed at this morning’s Daily Record article, which appears to equate calls for an inquiry into an alleged conspiracy to subvert tax law, as well as SFA and SPL rules, on a level with sectarianism. Most clearly here:

“Of course, this will infuriate the self-proclaimed, proud ‘bampots’ on social media toiling away 24/7 in pursuit of justice for Scottish football.

“Their irreversibly entrenched view will always be that ‘the Protestant establishment club cheated on an industrial scale’”.

I’m disturbed that so many people on social media are having their views on rule breaking caricatured as an anti-Protestant witch-hunt.

This is wildly inaccurate, sinister and inflammatory. A sign, perhaps, of the direction of travel in this debate.

This bit is really, REALLY, important.

If there is a perception that there is a risk to social media users this debate is closed – trust me on this one. Right now, some are asking themselves, “How much sectarian hatred are the media prepared to stir up if we talk about this?”

Convince people their club’s record is being questioned, not because of rule breaking, but for religious reasons, and you open Pandora’s Box – and we all know this.

Don’t get angry. This angle is thus far isolated, should be mocked and we should quickly move on.

If you want the debate to take place, don’t lose focus and stick to the point: were tax laws, SFA and SPL rules broken, if so, was this an oversight, or was there a conspiracy to subvert the rules and earlier inquiries?

Perhaps most importantly, this is the time for other clubs and their fans to have their say.

Jim Craig and Brendan Sweeney on CQN TONIGHT!

Lisbon Lion, Jim Craig, and Celt for Change, Brendan Sweeny, Live chat on CQN tonight.

I’m absolutely delighted we have yet another Lisbon Lion, Jim Craig, on CQN tonight, as well as a one of the most influential fans in our history, Brendan Sweeny (who will cringe at reading that).

Brendan has researched and written Celtic: The Early Years, forward by Jim. It is the most incredible account of the how and why a football club was formed in Parkhead in 1888, and the seismic events which shaped its future during the Early Years.

Both will be on CQN tonight from 7:30, you can ask questions on the blog and chat to them. Ask Jim about those great times, his career after football, or what’s going on at the club now.

Brendan, as an integral part of Celts for Change, Jungle Bhoys and now Celtic Graves Society, has been a force of nature for the Celtic cause. This is also about as far into the limelight as he’s ever likely to emerge!

Premium Seats competition for Kilmarnock game on Saturday

Magners, Celtic’s main sponsor, are offering fans the chance to win a pair of Premium Seat tickets in the Jock Stein Stand to the match. All you have to do is answer the following question:

Who was Celtic manager when Kilmarnock won their first game in over half a century?

Email answer to celticquicknews@gmail.com with the answer in the email SUBJECT box.

Competition closes at 22:00 tonight, so this is a one day target!

On another subject, Ad hominem, def:

An ad hominem (Latin for “to the man” or “to the person”), is an attack on an argument made by attacking the character, motive, or other attribute of the person making the argument, rather than attacking the argument directly. When used inappropriately, it is a logical fallacy in which a claim or argument is dismissed on the basis of some irrelevant fact or supposition about the author or the person being criticised.

Just saying……..

Time for some Labi Siffre tunes.

  1. In any ‘normal’ society that piece by Mooney would have been torn to shreds.

In fact it would not have been published at all.

    But this is Scotland.

The guy needs to be taken to task.

    HH!!

  2. Auldheid,

Your project was no meant to be derogatory so sorry if that’s how it came across. This is your project in every way and form from the investigation to the narrative, and I know exactly what you put into it.

I accept TSFM is/was probably the only cross club blog and therefore least likely to be dismissed.

The journalist, I read what he had to say and disagree about his tone and argument, the 10 year provenance rule kills his objections stone dead, he might believe he his opinion has more validity but the long and short is it’s only an opinion and no more valid then mine or anyone else who can and has done a wee bit digging into the rules of the game, I also disagree with his attitude to Celtic supporters being so righteous.

Your own argument that you don’t think the

LNS inquiry can’t be challenged on the Bryson submission I believe is wrong, and now with BRTH’s wee gem about member shareholders I expect a judicial enquiry could be based on that point alone. Yep it would likely involve experts/writers of the rules from FIFA relating exactly what is meant by their rules but as I said it doesn’t take lawyers or even experts to interpret the rules an elementary understanding of English interpretation will provide a very strong case.

I do agree that a single objection to the LNS decisions would be silly and never advocated that which is what I think you and the journalist are implying, I simply stated the rule on ineligible players is just another reason why the LNS decision is wrong, me and loads of so righteous Celtic supporters agree on that, it was never about a single issue but the recognition that another squirrel (unfair sporting advantage) had been chased down and killed, and that Bryson’s law was in fact a deliberate misinterpretation of the rules deliberately set out to misguide the adjudicators.

When/if there is a revisit to this decision, more people will be ready for squirrels and obfuscations because more people will have seen the relevant rule discussed as opposed to discussion justifying wrong interpretations and decisions.

Keep on keeping on but don’t make this an argument about who/what is the only correct argument, we both know that LNS got it wrong on many levels irrespective of evidence he was fed or the remit he had. As a legal expert he had a duty of care to question information and not accept it at face value, he had previous SFA involvement in inquiry’s so it would not be too big a leap of faith to think he had an elementary understanding of the rules of the game else how could ha have made previous judgments or are we to accept he was spoon fed what to think on his previous involvement too.?

Good luck with that. Last time I heard the head of that organisation talk was on John Beattie’s show where they were asking the question whether such a thing as anti-Irish racism existed in Scotland. The Nil B Mouth chap offered such equivocation in his statements as to make the term “sectarian” mean nothing. In his attempt to demonstrate that “one side is as bad as the other” he seems to have lost any kind of objectivity. He’s scared to state that this is largely one way traffic and it’s so ingrained in Scottish society that it had become normalised. Why? Well, my guess is that he doesn;t want to offend the Scottish Government in case he loses funding.

The DR may well hide behind the facade of printing a guest article which doesn’t necessarily represent the DR’s own view.

However this article expresses such socially irresponsible and dangerous views, that the editor should surely be held to account for allowing it’s publication. The press standards agency, or whatever body regulates editorial policy in Scotland, ought to be on to this.

Why are we looking for rules? Were there any in place to allow New Club entry to the Bottom tier?

If the SFA can make rules up or fit to enable entry then surely it wouldn’t be too difficult to do the right thing here?

An independent & entirely separate inquiry in to everything is what’s needed, title stripping should just be the consequence.

For as long as our plc hides behind the SPFL and refuses to publicly back its shareholders then it will be percieved as an Old Firm issue. For sure.

I think the lack of comment on the letter I posted yesterday from DD. Where it can be seen that he really is the Old Firms knight in shining armour is highly revealing.

It reveals that nobody on here can accept that we are an Old Firm club. Do not confuse this with what you would like to rhink we are.

Lower league Belgian team Royal Liege have described Celtic as a “high class” club after they made a development fee payment for current backup goalkeeper Logan Bailly.

The Belgian goalie joined the Scottish Premiership champions in the summer from OH Leuven for an undisclosed fee.

And it turns out Royal Liege were due a payment from the Hoops as part of his early development as a player at the club.

As Liege told it, Celtic got in touch with them to organise the payment and then followed up with the cash three days later.

A Royal Liege statement said: “At a time when the world of football often resembles a jungle where the end justifies the means, we would like to acknowledge the exemplary behaviour of this venerable Scottish club.

  10. Awe_Naw

Celtic, are to my knowledge the only club in Scotland to have commented on the COS ruling (no surprise there)

Does that make us ‘the old firm?’

Or does it makes us, the only club to have had the balls, to say anything about the fraud every other club in Scotland knows took place and caused the demise of the original Rangers.

Without backing from the rest of Scottish football, Celtic’s individual stance which concurs with COS, is a pure waste of time, and well you know it.

  15. Been out of the loop for a few days but from a quick scan….nothing has changed.

During any mid season international break, there is always a discussion vacuum on the blog and across Timland.

The SFA scandal – has filled that vacuum.

Many on here have spoken of the central message of Paul’s article and Auldheid’s earlier posts; that fans from all clubs need to be engaged in the calls for justice.

The scandal started as a Rangers affair but has become, and with each passing day is increasingly, an SFA scandal.

That is the common ground where other fans may come aboard. IMHO.

There are even some Rangers fans who are truly sick of the disintegration of the “club” they support and will admit where the responsibility lies.

The illegal tax avoidance issue will run to it’s natural conclusion with no help or hindrance from us or anyone in the Scottish media, the SFA, the SPL, or Scottish Football and the wider community.

I understand that an appeal against that COS decision can only be lodged on legal grounds; no frivolous appeal will be permitted to proceed past the application to appeal “gate keeper”. In essence, the jig is well and truly up, with most knowledgeable commentators not expecting any appeal from anyone.

It is in the other areas where the battle lies.

Those in control at Rangers do not want any action taken – for obvious reasons – they have an investment at stake.

The media groundwork is really being done to prepare for the outcome that those in control at the SFA want. No Further Action. If you like.. NFA from the SFA.

We know what Rangers did and why they did it. To independent observers, the trail is clear and leads directly back to the officers and functionaries of the SFA, both before the liquidation of Rangers and since. Before, they were incompetent and/or implicated and after they are incompetent/implicated/colluding.

To paraphrase Jonathon Brown, the “elephant in the room” question that outsiders always ask with incredulity when they learn of the sage is “WHAT WAS THE SFA DOING DURING ALL OF THIS?”

It is an accepted truism in political circles that “it’s not the scandal that will get you, it’s the cover up”.

This whole saga has been riddled with consistent and colossal blunders of management by the SFA. They know that their decisions, processes and officers are heavily compromised by the stench of collusion, the lack of transparency and real accountability. The complete absence of any official utterance by anyone from the SFA on this disgraceful scandal speaks to that guilt. By their silence, they feed the frenzy that is dismantling the game in Scotland in front of our eyes. They are the responsible footballing authorities and are doing nothing and saying nothing. They feed off the record gossip to their media stenographers, and wait for that mess to tap into the reservoir of latent sectarianism in Scotland.

They continue to fail to meet the criteria of fit for purpose. They are out of their professional depths by a hundred fathoms.

The SFA want this to go away and tarnishing all of those who are speaking up against doing nothing – as sectarian, bigoted, irrational, deluded bampots is what they have done for years in Scotland. The cursed OF label has been part of the dissembling voice of the SFA for decades – and has been used to ensure the status quo prevailed. A dissembling organisation cannot be transparent and accountable.

    This scandal is no different.

in answer to your question. The way that is was done then YES ABSOLUTELY !!

The statement was induced due to fan (customer) (minority shareholder) pressure a bit like the statement after the SC final as the opening salvo informs everyone. It is due to being pressurised rather than them freely acting. A very important distinction. I am sure you HAVE to agree ?

The statement said we will act as part of the SPFL and the SFA and through the courts if necessary. I.e if the SPFL and the SFA deem it necessary. NOT CELTIC

Celtic are happy to remain SURPRISED.

Celtic are the only show in town. Without Celtic’s backing there is no money in Scottish football. SO I really REALLY do not buy without the other clubs backing mantra. Especially when it comes to the courts

I wonder if they were as surprised as the weans who lost their 50 quid seats if Sevco got promoted ?

The other clubs want Celtic to renegotiate their miserable TV deal and keep the huns in the frame for more money. Peter Lawwell is only to happy to carry out the negotiations. If it means keeping Sevco in the picture, even at our short term expense.
