Sky Sports ex-Newco man plows into Celtic

233

Sky Sports followed the news that they captured SPFL TV rights with one of their media team having a go at Celtic and Peter Lawwell.  Andrew Dickson (not that one) was previously part of Newco’s media team but is now a producer with Sky.

Following Peter Lawwell’s response to a question on needing assurance for the safety of Celtic fans at Ibrox, Dickson tweeted:

“Only place there has been a safety issue in recent times was at Celtic Park – involving Celtic fans. No track record of the problems Lawwell fears at Ibrox so why chuck that one into the conversation? To make your opponents look like big bad Rangers?”

I have been going to Ibrox for 35 years.  During that time, and for decades before, Celtic fans had exclusive access to the stadium via Broomload Road.  On 29 December, 800 Celtic fans will have to make their way through Broomload Road, which will also be the only access area 7,000 Newo fans have to the stadium.

There is a bit of a pantomime goes on at these games, with fans shouting at each other from the safety of a police cordon.  Due to police planning, fans do not intermingle in the vicinity of the stadium.

Police permit fans of other clubs to walk through Newco fans to attend Ibrox (and Celtic Park), but they have yet to decide if cordons is unnecessary for next month’s fixture, or if segregation it to happen, how 800 Celtic fans can safely enter the stadium.

Celtic have been in regular dialogue with the police and League since Newco’s statement on the subject in the summer and await a decision.  Sky Sports staff seem to have picked up the baton to support Newco’s position, despite safety concerns.

At least there should be no trouble after the match, that lot are usually well home by full time.

Just a question … seriously, not a dig … just a question … maybe to stiimulate a discussion … maybe it is my nature, but I struggle to understand the ‘pro-Board’ perspective … so perhaps you can assist ….

but if the fans and club are to move forward, we need to find some common ground ….

that requires at least understanding where the other person is coming from …

    so, in that spirit…

I am wondering if there is a line that you would not cross? For example, what if Celtic and Sevco decided to ground share? would that be okay? or, if we found out that our Board were financially supporting sevco… would that be okay? or, if we started wearing blue and green hoops?

Strongest Celtic team on Thursday followed by strongest Celtic team on Sunday will give us two victories and one Cup this week. Will set us up for a winning December series of wins that will win us the league again.

  5. Quick question on the tickets for next Sunday.

I live in Ireland so Celtic emailed and phoned me to insist that I give a UK address to send my ticket to. Royal Mail can take up to 3 weeks due to the ‘irish end’ not working they said. I stupidly gave them my parents address and it has arrived there. As they won’t be around next weekend I am getting it sent by the same medium to me in Ireland. I am confident I will get it in 2 days.

What are the CSCs in Ireland doing to get bulk tickets per game?

This is obviously a policy or they would not have emailed and phoned me

Does anyone else think this is nuts? I

My post re The Wonderful Celtic of the Mind and he Urbane Celtic of Reality is something I would more enjoy enlarging upon in the Pub rather than in the written word.I am sure the general idea is understood by those who made interesting responses but I will leave it there for now.

As regards Thursday and Sunday. Strongest available selection for me.

    Cheerio for now.

Just Needed a break from reading boring legal stuff ….

and I enjoy chatting with HS …. he and I disagree on a good many things (but, I think we probably agree on much more … but those are things that we sort of take for granted) …

but he and I can debate, and whether I end up agreeing with him, he makes me consider my position … cant ask for more than that.

  8. At the recent home game against Hibs, a large banner in the away end proclaimed 1875. This passed by without our board putting out a statement condemning this continuity myth. Of course the current version of Hibs only started in 1893. I’m disgusted at the silence!

  9. Rosenberg also have a cup final on Sunday.

Maybe they will play a weakened team on Thursday.

My mum and dad both disliked Bob Kelly. Both despised Desmond White. They maybe had a wee bit of inside knowledge. My dad stopped going to Celtic matches in the 70’s.

When I asked him why he was not going to support Celtic anymore with me?

    He answered,”Desmond White.”

Good post. I think a lot of fans share your feelings. They are very similar to my own. I’ve had a good read at the posts on here and on Sentinelcelts over the last few days. Lots and lots of sensible posters expressing their discontent with the Board and particularly their failure to stand up for the Club over the last 6 years on the face of collusion and cheating by the authorities. It has also infuriated me but then I look at where Celtic stand today. We didn’t get there by incompetence from the Board or from Peter Lawell. Going for 8 in a row, a third consecutive treble and regular European football at least until December. Another Cup final on Sunday. We humiliate Sevco regularly on the pitch. It doesn’t get much better than this. I think many of our forebears would have enjoyed it having had to suffer the lean years as they did.

Many people detested the Kelly/White/Grant dynasty but it was only when the Club’s existence was threatened that fans began to take real action and that was only successful because Fergus McCann appeared on the scene to provide finance and leadership. Many of the posts I have read have talked about boycotts of merchandise and deferring the payment of season tickets to show their displeasure in a way that the Board understand. Some even talk about non-attendance. I don’t think there will be any action taken along these lines by the vast majority of fans while the team are winning trophies, skelping the Huns regularly and being attacked in the media being plotted against by the authorities (SFA, Police Scotland etc). I’m hoping that the dark days will never return. Perhaps, the punishment for Sevco will be that they will be skelped by 5 goals or more by Celtic, in perpetuity, at least once per season.

    Dead right.

Early `60s . My ould uncle used to have a whinge that he thought Mrs Kelly picked the team .

But that was because the performance on the field was lousy.

Internet ” people power ” rules the media and the chatosphere.

Does it represent the opinion or will of the majority ?

    Aye . There`s the rub.

I can understand why your dad felt that way.

    You are correct.

No matter what we do, they always look for a negative.

Look after we beat Leipzig, Brendan called that tube Sutherland out because rather than congratulate Celtic on a good victory, he said we had lost the head to head ( or words to that effect)

  18. MIKE IN TORONTO @ 8:38 PM,

It will be interesting to see where Celtic supporters are in a decade…

It’s my contention that the aim of Celtic PLC is to be a contender in a pan European league by then.

Everything they have been working to for the last decade suggests it.

The Celtic Park Environs, the way all the teams from the first team through Lennoxtown to the boys play technically and tactically. The all encompassing professional set up at Lennoxtown. Building Lennoxtowns reputation for bringing in great prospects and producing great players.

It all helps towards, while not being first in the queue, that was never on the cards, to be in the second tranche and make Euro League 2.

Of course with our strong financials and cash and backing Celtic can expand quicker than any other European Club.

We could literally double in a Season, going from a £100M Club to a £200M Club.

Then by Season three the main stands rebuilt and get promotion to Euro League 1 – 80,000 supporters @ Celtic Park.

We could be a £400M Club in three Seasons… how many Clubs could do that.

Of course if you happen to be an investor or shareholder the rewards will be humongous.

So back to your question… if the major shareholders sell out to folk or corporations and we become the Man City of Glasgow…

Do you still support the Club!?

    Hail Hail

The next game against the hun may be a real watershed.

Hopefully it will accelerate their slow inevitable decline to irrelevance.

More painful than a sudden death.

    Not a very kind thought , I know……………..

  22. Turkeybhoy,

I don’t know anyone who had any time for the Kellys or the Whites. Imo, we are much better served by the current Board. To all appearances, our manager seems to be happy to work with them. That’s enough for me.

Each to their own. And long may that continue. But, again imo, for some time all some contributors have done on CQN is attempt to undermine it and those who had different opinions to themselves. Sad. Sadder still, imo, are those who play the ad hominem tactic rather than argue their position, especially attacking our host, who gives us all great latitude in expressing our opinions, for what they perceive as his stance particularly with regard to the Board. As far as I know, silence does not connote agreement.

  23. JIMMYNOTPAUL-we were in car at that time and and just looked at each other?

Did BR tell him the problem with the wee Scottish media ??

  24. mike in toronto on

    Chairbhoy….

as per the GSS report, there is something wrong when a sport start gets paid 50 times more than the person running the country they play in …. but that is the way of the world ….

so, my issue isnt with Celtic making too much money… my issue is how they conduct their business ….

if things were done openly and honestly, I would still be a Celtic supporter, even if they were bought by Macjay (or one of those other overseas billionaires)….

    You must be joking.

Celts for change were headline news in their determination to get rid of the old board.

Don’t you remember the game v Killie where there was a boycott on?

the campaign went on for years.

Lawwell worked for the old board at that time.

  27. TET-kept it for here ,because it didn’t happen on sentinelcelts?

Shame on you tom Thornton,Horton or whoever ???

  28. MIT,

You mean like ” Red lines” in the sand ?in topical news, have you seen the recent problems ” Red Lines ” have been causing.

Remember board members are only the current custodians, the fans are there for the duration.

Circumstances change, but to answer your hypothetical points. :- Our stadium and surrounding area has been developed into a thing of beauty over the years. It is truly somthing to be proud of now. There is more chance of proving they walked on the moon in 1969 than Groundsharing with the huns.

As for blue and green hoops . Would it be worse that the pink strip. ( Sorry Fairhill Bhoy)

Seriously, I understand where you are coming from, however I enjoy watching and following our team. The board is secondary no matter how essential they are.
