Sky Sports ex-Newco man plows into Celtic

233

Sky Sports followed the news that they captured SPFL TV rights with one of their media team having a go at Celtic and Peter Lawwell.  Andrew Dickson (not that one) was previously part of Newco’s media team but is now a producer with Sky.

Following Peter Lawwell’s response to a question on needing assurance for the safety of Celtic fans at Ibrox, Dickson tweeted:

“Only place there has been a safety issue in recent times was at Celtic Park – involving Celtic fans. No track record of the problems Lawwell fears at Ibrox so why chuck that one into the conversation? To make your opponents look like big bad Rangers?”

I have been going to Ibrox for 35 years.  During that time, and for decades before, Celtic fans had exclusive access to the stadium via Broomload Road.  On 29 December, 800 Celtic fans will have to make their way through Broomload Road, which will also be the only access area 7,000 Newo fans have to the stadium.

There is a bit of a pantomime goes on at these games, with fans shouting at each other from the safety of a police cordon.  Due to police planning, fans do not intermingle in the vicinity of the stadium.

Police permit fans of other clubs to walk through Newco fans to attend Ibrox (and Celtic Park), but they have yet to decide if cordons is unnecessary for next month’s fixture, or if segregation it to happen, how 800 Celtic fans can safely enter the stadium.

Celtic have been in regular dialogue with the police and League since Newco’s statement on the subject in the summer and await a decision.  Sky Sports staff seem to have picked up the baton to support Newco’s position, despite safety concerns.

At least there should be no trouble after the match, that lot are usually well home by full time.

  1. I keep seeing post saying that those who are what they perceive as anti board are the problem on here, fine, if that’s the way you see it, I personally beg to differ, I see it as the polar opposite.

Out of many, many posters who would be in the anti board camp as it were I have yet to see them attacking the ” pro ” board posters for their opinions, I disagree with so so many posts on here by those who can’t see the board doing no wrong, can’t say that I have ever jumped on them for their stance, I react when called out, but NEVER have I called them out for their beliefs, that can not be said for the pro board posters, I was accused wrongly the other night of slagging cqn, utter garbage, never have and never would, I have to much respect for our host and the vast majority of people who post here, it’s been a wonderful blog to me and countless others, yet some feel the need to chastise us for our beliefs, that is what’s sad. Oh and I will always back up anything I say, whether you agree with it or not is another matter.

If you don’t like what someone posts, scroll on by and leave out the pathetic childish boo hoo digs, scrolling by works wonders.

My dad never swore in the company of women or children. He never spoke badly of anyone. He was a Marxist/Christian paradox. He did speak badly of Desmond White, but that was borne from a personal experience.

Used to love hear him swear at refs at Celtic matches ?

Really enjoyed your post above and spent a fair bit of time constructing my own thoughts on the matter, only for my post to disappear into the ether during the last sentence :-((

Suffice to say you outline a very interesting and thoughtful scenario. I hope these ideas come to fruition.

  4. TOSB,

The internet is a great vehicle and Paul 67’s blog gives us a great forum to discuss all things Celtic and beyond.

However a vocal minority can often distort actual reality. I don’t think the majority of fans think we are a club in disarray as many on the blogs would have us believe. For example, I am absolutely gobsmacked how many ” diehard” Celtic fans are completely unaware of Res 12

    Cheers and HH.

    …………….

I personally hope for a very bright future for Celtic supporters to look forward to. The structures seem to be in place at the club to provide a platform for success for the team and fans. However, I think there is a certain level of discontent amongst a fair number of fans that the Board have not always defended our interests as well as they should have. That will always remain a bone of contention and that’s unfortunate.

I agree with most of your post – I remember standing many times in the Jungle in the late 60s and 70s with mates and family from Dalmuir, surveying a very full CP, maybe 40,000, and my uncle Daniel saying “That looks like 27,000 to me… what d’ye think?” to hollow laughter. Because the registered attendance was always 27,000.

That was the boards of Bob Kelly and Desmond White. Boards are boards; fans are fans.

We seem to have it as a strand of our DNA that we NEVER improve from a position of strength.

Champions of Europe. Did we kick on? Naw. We built a stand, from which we could get a great view of our next generation of top players slowly but surely leave us, one by one.

The Board expected Mr Stein to continue to pull rabbits out of the hat without any acknowledgement that, in the 70s, football had changed utterly.

These days you’d call it corporate negligence.

This is what concerns me the most. 50 years on, and the disconnect between board and fans is as huge as it was back then.

I know the board’s fiduciary duties, and they have fulfilled them, and then some.

    But what about our soul?

That is indeed a very interesting thought.

It may explain a reluctance to rock the domestic boat or to prove to be a thorn in the side of UEFA.

I’m sorry TOSB – i started replying to your post but spun off into a rant.

  12. If, ch4 took up the Resolution 12 story, they’d probably ask why Celtic’s rebel (lol) supporter’s, didny do what, Sinn Fein, the “real” rebels did, when they found out about the DUP’s corruption, at the heart of government, with the RHI corruption, Sinn Fein emptied awe the seats at the Satanic Stormont, and pulled the house down!

Celtic supporters should have done the same with Scottish football, anything else is back of the bus.

    The difference is……

Sinn Fein are the “real” rebels, and take no crap.

Celtic supporters of 2018, just sing about rebels, because they hivny got the balls to be “real” rebels!

Hopefully, I’ll be proved wrong. I was wrong before,….once.

    ……………………………

Having problems tonight! Lost my reply to you so here we go again :-))

You pose an interesting question: What about our soul?

I think this arises for individuals or organisations who want to achieve success. It can be someone who is promoted at work and is no longer one of the boys. The Beatles enjoyed great success but they dumped a Pete Best and replaced him with Ringo. Was anyone’s conscience troubled?

I think Celtic fans think of the Club as being one of the more principled clubs in football but we have had our own episodes that we might want to draw a veil over. The Club thought Jock’s best days were behind him but wasn’t it shabby how they went about it. Another episode (and I celebrated like most others) was the Legia incident. We celebrated that we weren’t knocked out after all, even though we had been well beaten, home and away, by a far superior team who lost out on a technicality. It was a bit shabby, with hindsight.

I think there is almost always a trade off between success and soul or (the loss of it).

  18. Delaney’s

Aye, White was a reptile right enough but the one that made my skin crawl was Michael Kelly. A face that I would never tire of punching. His ‘peripheral homes’ comment was a low point.

  19. MIKE IN TORONTO @ 9:13 PM,

Yes, get that, the money would be most welcome. My thoughts were more on, as it has been put… the soul of the Club… but guess we’ll have to wait and see. Barcelona for all their riches have proven time and again they’re more than a Club.

Interesting comparison between sports stars salaries and those who run the country.

Arguably Dennis Bergkamp was the best Footballer in Britain when Tony Blair came to power… my guess would be Dennis’s salary dwarfed Tony’s… wonder whose richest now!?

    THEORIGINALSADIESBHOY @ 9:38 PM,

It’s very annoying to lose a post, luckily it’s pretty infrequent for me nowadays, would have loved to hear your thoughts.

I sincerely believe it will come to fruition, sooner rather than later for me.

    MACJAY1 @ 9:56 PM,

That is was my thoughts exactly, if you look at the controversies over the last seasons, the strategy the Board follow would be in line with that thinking.

Also investment decisions, why so much on the stadium, why lights, why a Hotel… in the proposed scenario these things are no brainers.

You know, sometimes the grass is greener:)

    Hail Hail

  20. 800 Sevco 2012, or whatever they are called – followers, came to Celtic park, earlier this season, receiving special attention from Police Scotland through distrupting 59000 Celtic fans.

Why should 800 Celtic fans, not get the same special attention of Police Scotland, to allow them to attend the Hovel, and disrupt only 49000 others ?

Why should Celtic fans be treated differently ?

Attend the game and let the Police and Sevco security deal with crowd

I understand others views, and easy for me, as I will not be there, ever
